It shouldn't though. Why should people pack AT the till when there's a preparation are for that very purpose. It wastes time and hold up everyone.

how hard is it to have your empty bags open in the trolley ready to go? I always pack at the till. whats the point in putting the stuff in the trolley twice?

Not everybody uses a trolley! How are you going to move your stuff to the window if you don't have a trolley unless you pack them?
    "Cash or card?"
I hate that. I've only noticed them saying that in Aldi where I rarely shop, so I'm never ready for it. Add in the usual foreign accent and I'm thinking "Wha'?".
I don't use a trolley,i fill my bags and then pack them as she scans them , I pay by card and I'm finished before the card is processed....
    Fck the window sill !!
Same here (except I usually have a crisp €50 note ready for them). I quickly pack my stuff, hopefully perfectly, but if not, I then go to the window sill to re-arrange stuff. I've often had 20 items and taken less time than the person on front of me who only had 3 items. Some people are so bad at shopping!

The till musical chairs really is puzzling in those shops. They probably have a valid reason but it just seems strange to randomly open and close them.
As others have said, it's because they each have their own cash-box.

there was a lad on Irish Dragons Den a few years ago with a similar system to this, always meant to buy them but never got around to it

I pack at the till, it takes the same amount of time as it would packing at the window sill. What I always do is place my shopping on the conveyor belt in the order that I will pack them. This saves more time and I don't have to clog up the sill.

The self service machines in Tesco are crap and the loading trays are far too small. The ones in Supervalue work much better.

Waitrose is where its at. The only thing I miss, since moving back - and a decent curry :D

If we have a trolleys worth of stuff, we just load into the trolley, roll away and bag it up. If less, we bag at the till. If the Lidl's particularly busy when we arrive, we get a trolley no matter what.

Maybe they can get with the old times and, *horror*, hire baggers. Then we can all whinge about slow checkers. But they can implement 'checker acceleration programs', perhaps electric collars, to get them moving fast.

+1 to the poster about not having self-service. Self service machines are a joke, meltdown all the fecking time.

And if there's one thing that's most annoying at Lidl, is that people don't push the dividers down the little narrow slot so that people at the rear of the lines can get their stuff onto the conveyor belt. I regularly find myself walking over to one of the closed tills to grab a few of 'em and them put them out.

You are all doing it wrong, forget your shopping bags. Trust me, I've being living in Germany over 15 years. The shopping bags will just slow you down, they collapse, most often you will need more than 1 so you will be fumbling to get the next one open, it's awkward to get certain items into them as they catch on the sides and so on. Too much lost time in the race to avoid having the next persons shopping landing on top of yours.

What you need is the collapsable shopping box, similar to this. You just leave it at the bottom of your trolley while shopping and once everything is loaded on the belt you give a quick flick of the wrists and you are ready to fill it. It is compact, folds out quickly and is much easier to carry and load into and out of your car, plus it won't fall over and let things fall out.

Then the secret is the place all the larger objects on the belt first and the objects that have a natural form. So fruit and vegetable would be last and can rest on top of the glasses and cartons. You will always be as quick as the cashier when you do this.

Aldi & Lidl's checkout system is only there to suit Aldi and Lidl.

Which in turn suits the Aldi and Lidl customers because they don't have to cover the cost of staff waiting while customers pack..........

I'm not going to pack and unpack my stuff twice when I'm at the till so I just make them wait until everything is packed

Just throw your stuff on the belt and then put the divider in place.

Wander into Super Valu Churchtown for a masterclass in how awful self service machines can really be.

I'll see you your Churchtown and raise you the one in Ranelagh..... i don't think I've ever got through those without some sort of a problem!

Anybody else think it's funny that customers stay resolutely parallel with their items on the belt? It's seems if that they don't someone will do something dodgy with their precious items!

The fella who will end up giving Svetlana a hard time for how long he is in a Que is the same fella who will fumble for his change, forget his pin etc, not put the next customer bar on the conveyor belt, have his head stuck into candy crush and he stands in the line.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,108 ✭✭✭✭neris

one annoyance is when theres ques at a check out and they go to open another checkout and some cnut with a trolley full gets to be 1st in que at the new checkout.

I like packing again at the window sill, its a good place to meet women.

I pack at the till as does the vast majority of people, Its very rare you see someone packing at the window. If you are anyway half awake you can get the stuff packed more or less at the pace its being scanned especially if you organise it on the conveyor so that stuff for the bottom of bags comes to you first etc.

Pure waste of my time and effort bringing stuff over the window to pack it its no wonder this system doesn't work in Ireland as people have more cop on than to be told how to pack their shopping.

Did I read there recently that one of the supermarket chains is now offering or thinking about offering the option of having a mobile scanner that you scan items as you shop and then pay at the till? Sounds like a great idea if it gets introduced.

I regularly go to a local Aldi and Lidl and in principle, the queuing system is excellent.

Lob your stuff on the conveyor belt, move to end of the checkout, your stuff is quickly scanned through and you (just as quickly) put the stuff back into the trolley and pay.

Move to the preparation window sill things at the end and repack and organise there.

What p1sses me off about Aldi and Lidls here is that most people are organising and packing at the end of the tills.
The whole mantra of Lidl and Aldi is efficiency, which thus translates into cheaper goods due to less dwell time and wasted time. There is no justification to have more tills open in Lidl / Aldi if people just copped on and stopped packing at the till.

THAT'S WHAT THE WINDOW SILLS ARE THERE FOR

I've been to Aldi and Lidl in Germany and the Netherlands and you'll get dirty looks for holding up the system. People there actually respect the system there.

One of the biggest problems are people not having their money / card ready. Women seem to be worst, search in the huge bag, then a huge purse comes out, then it's search for money.
It's as if they're surprised they've to hand over money.
    Very annoying.

Where else are they supposed to go? All gather down at the window and wait to be called according as their items reach the cashier? Like Starbucks?

If their stuff gets ahead of them (as it can if people have trolleys etc), then wait till the person ahead moves forward instead of climbing up on their back!

Don't invade my personal space!!!

And you hold yourself up dragging everything out of the trolley AGAIN at the window when you could have packed it at the till.

    Ridiculous system.

Reeks of "gimme the money, now beat it".

Worst of all is when somebody has all the packing/paying done and that counter area is empty, but the customer still stands there fiddling with their wallet/purse, putting away coins, cards, receipts etc, which means that the next person can't move into the right position to start bagging.

The systems they have in place at Lidl/aldi dont bother me to be honest.
And the staff are always friendly, more so than in tesco, but not as friendly as in supervalue IMO.

But reading this thread about people putting their trolley in the queue while they then continue shopping.
FFS, that would drive me nuts. Fair enough forgetting one item and explaining and dashing. But doing a full shop while having a trolley in the queue - nah!

I'm always amazed at how rude people are, holding up 3 or 4 other people behind them because they have to cram stuff into their bags at the till.
Height of ignorance in my opinion.

I'm usually fast enough to pack at the till (as in, I've got stuff packed up by the time the cashier tells me what the total is), but if I'm not I move out of the way and let others get on with their business. That's what the window sills are for.
One of the (many!) reasons I avoid shopping anywhere other than Aldi and Lidl is that they don't provide any space where you can pack without holding up other people.

This just isn't in lidl or aldi though. It's the most selfish thing on the world. Seriously, if you need to fiddle with your purse you should do 1 of 2 things.

    1. Stand away from the counter so the next person can be served as the cashier won't call them before you move because it's considered rude.

    2. Put whatever you have in your pocket and sort it later or sort it in a place where you aren't in the way!!

Why are people so self involved? I'd understand if we lived in some mad dangerous country but seriously, nobody is gonna snatch 3 euros out of your hand if you're out of sight of the cashier.

Lidl and Aldi aren't so bad cause the cashier usually just starts scanning but it's centra/spar and places like that where it's the most annoying. I'm in the spar because I'm in a hurry god damn it!!!

They need to get with the times and bring in the self service machines.

Right pain in the hole to use. I only use them at off peak times, partly to get rid of sh1tty brown cent coins.

i shop with my partner, so if im paying, she packs, if she is paying, i pack, so once all items scanned, she goes straight to pay for goods while im still packing. works great, but not so much when your on your own :(
