It was a very serious issue, still is if you still have the phone.

On airplanes, they asked people with Samsung 7 notes to not to put the phone in their bag for the hold in the plane, and to bring them onto the airplane to keep the phone switched off for the duration of the flight, but on their body.
There was real worry the phone could bring down a plane.

Yes. I've been on four flights since this started, and on each the pilot got on the intercom before takeoff to warn passengers, and in the case of the two most recent flights there were also frequent announcements over the terminal public address systems warning about the phones.

A fire is certainly capable of bringing down a plane, and these produce an intensely hot fire which can't be easily put out and which releases toxic fumes.

    It's not a trivial issue.

Out of interest, do you know what causes the intensely hot fire?

I don't understand how an everyday product that someone could have in there pocket or in front of their face which could spontaneously combust is not a serious issue!?

You may call it a first world problem but we live in the first world so therefore it is a problem.

    Nothing to see here.

Since that's not an executable gif on mobile, you're damn right there's nothing to see!

Ah lads, talking about planes dropping from the sky in flames only increases the hyperbole that I'm referring to. It hasn't happened yet and while it could, one presumes that could happen to a laptop and other equipment.

In fairness....I'm not going shifting the toothless prostitutes that appear in the journal on a night out

Ah the male ones aren't that bad Tom!

    But it deosnt??
Its a fault in Samsung batteries to such an extent they've stopped production to sort it

Seemingly it'd the batteries/phone been made too thin causing short circuit....hardly likely on much more than a mobile tbf

Apparently this is going to cost the company 17 billion dollars:
    http://www.reuters.com/article/us-samsung-elec-smartphones-costs-idUSKCN12B0FX

Can't even imagine that kind of money, I'm happy out with 50 quid a week not including the rent.

Always beware of sensationalist media - the real figures are always substantially less

If you belived the media 5bn could be watching the olympic opening cermony and over 350 million could watch the Eurovision. Great headlines, but misleading. 4bn had acces to watch olympics if they wished - most couldn;t be bothered, same with eurovision.

Reuters base their figures on top end estimates of sales and multiply it by the retail price.

I'd deduct about 70% from that figure. many will take the standard S7, others will wait for a new model.

Yes, its bad, but not catastrophic.

One presumes incorrectly. there is a specific fault in the battery of the Note 7 that can cause it to catch fire and/or explode.

It has happened to laptops in the past. More worryingly, it has happened to batteries installed in the plane itself. It's the same Lithium Ion battery technology that grounded the Boeing 787 Dreamliner a couple of years ago for safety checks, after several caught fire. So, no it's not hyperbole. They might not get hot enough to melt steel, but planes aren't made of steel: they're made of aluminium alloys or composites that have lower melting points.

Samsung is worth $18 Billion less because the batteries weren't removable.

    That's the only reason.

And there are only two reasons to prevent the user removing the battery
    - making the phone a fraction of a mm thinner and slightly lighter
    - planned obsolescence

Otherwise they could have sorted out this by posting out new batteries. Even if there was a problem with the charging circuit then a small circuit in the new battery could control the charging.

Had to be a sealed unit to be waterproof also which is a fairly sought after feature on new phones these days.

    That's my point.

Items can catch fire, yet there is no ban on laptops etc. on planes. Again, I'm simply saying let's not pretend that the prospect of planes dropping out of the sky is the reason for it being so newsworthy.

The whole fire thing is not a design flaw. It's a misunderstood feature.

New Kettle App is what I heard. The phone could make tea/coffee.

It is news worthy, you spend 700 Euro on a device, you kinda expect it not to blow up in your face when you use it.

It might be worth €700 if it could blow up people that you rang with it:D

Looking forward to bringing my iPhone 7 Plus on board my flight Friday 🤗

...it's been carried on a few news reports today.

Is it just about the least interesting news ever? Gee whizz, one of the many models of smart phones on the market isn't great. What will we do to get over this? Maybe buy one of the other ones?

What next, the clutch on the Audi isn't great? Hold the front page.

You are right. Only stuff that interests you, Conor74 should ever get reported. Conor74 for director of news.

You know how you spot an iPhone user?

They tell you they own one.

There's a bit of a difference between a phone not being great and it bursting into flames.

I have no interest in phones but I have a cheap one from Argos in case of emergencies. It has very few features. It doesn't even have internet connection. I'm okay with that because all I want it for is to make phone calls. I don't need a phone to be great. However I draw the line at it bursting into flames. I'm picky like that.

If the iphone burst into flames Apple would market it as a face warmer and slap another €50 on the price

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test
