...it's been carried on a few news reports today.

Is it just about the least interesting news ever? Gee whizz, one of the many models of smart phones on the market isn't great. What will we do to get over this? Maybe buy one of the other ones?

What next, the clutch on the Audi isn't great? Hold the front page.

The stupid balance board things that caught fire last year were widely reported and I'm guessing a hell of a lot of less people had these than the phone in question.

A consumer device that could potentially burn a house down is newsworthy to me.

It seems like the epitome of a First World Problem to me, some must really want this and want this now.

A phone model that spontaneously combusts and is a threat to owners Worldwide is a first World problem and you have a problem with it being in the news?

    Huh.

It's newsworthy even if it's a brand of Dealz phones which blow up for no reason, but this is Samsung. They're a big deal.

Apparently this is going to cost the company 17 billion dollars:

Can't even imagine that kind of money, I'm happy out with 50 quid a week not including the rent.

I suspect more fires are caused by electrical faults, people falling asleep with the oven on or smoking fags, people covering laptops etc. Let's not pretend the real news is the fire crisis. It's a gadget gone wrong and the stock exchange reaction.

Samsung is worth $18 Billion less because the batteries weren't removable.

    That's the only reason.

And there are only two reasons to prevent the user removing the battery
    - making the phone a fraction of a mm thinner and slightly lighter
    - planned obsolescence

Otherwise they could have sorted out this by posting out new batteries. Even if there was a problem with the charging circuit then a small circuit in the new battery could control the charging.

The two Samsungs I've had you couldn't kill with a stick to be fair to them.

Given the number of people who sleep with their phones beside the pillow I'd say it was quite an important fire risk. That and the fact something millions of people would have bought in the coming months catching fire somewhat randomly is newsworthy.

Ah this usual comparison bollox argument. Im not pretending anything.

It is what it is and its newsworthy.

    Get over it.

Your house could burn down while your sleeping if one of these things goes up. It's a problem and obviously a very serious one.

Samsung knew about their dodgy batterys as far back as the galaxy s4, i had a battery explode in a fireball in my one, lucky I was in the house at the time. Had an awful time from Samsung even getting a replacement phone let alone the damage to my floor repaired. Took a lot of phone calls and being transferred from Dublin to England to Korea and an angry name and shame facebook post before they eventually sorted it. I wouldn't buy another Samsung product EVER.

A do think one of the major phone manufacturers doing a stop in production of the phones is somewhat big news

First I can recall.....AFAIK some of the replacements to recalled after exploding aswell

This has been going on since at least August iirc

Easy for you to say but I'm left here with a phone that could

Take a case of some aul one falling off a high stool after 14 pints and a ball of yokes. Sue the pub for half a million. Win.

Give us a real good newspaper headline. Come on Conor. Change starts within yourself.

It is news worthy, you spend 700 Euro on a device, you kinda expect it not to blow up in your face when you use it.

OP is just an argue bot.

If some halfwit circuit court judge awarded €500k to someone who lost their facebook posts due to the phone self-immolating he'd defend it to the death.

Samsung have pulled the plug on the Note 7

Responding poster is just an argue bot.

If someone were to suggest a story about a gadget isn't really that big a deal, he'd come up with some ravings about the Courts and Facebook messages to make some point about something.

The fact is, a mobile phone sometimes doesn't work, let's not pretend it's a more serious fire hazard than those that don't make the news. If we want to persist with this ridiculous strand, can anyone give the stats of deaths caused by Samsungs v deaths caused by other means in recent weeks? The issue here is hysterical reaction to a gadget that doesn't work.

Its a phone that bursts into flames.

    Of course it's news.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Samsung stopping production of a line of phones is possibly the biggest mobile phone news in years that wasn't a launch

A simple Google image search will show up that it's not merely a phone not working

Perhaps you don't deem it worthy of news (but it is of a tread )
But practically noone ever reads the court reports in the local papers either

Simply put differwnt people view different things as newsworthy....much different people like different things

Tom you're mad! They're the best pages. Read them on a Wednesday. Go out the Saturday night and play court bingo. It used to be better before they closed a certain pub in our town. You'd probably have a full house by your 3rd drink :D

In fairness....I'm not going shifting the toothless prostitutes that appear in the journal on a night out

(Well at least not before a 3rd drink) :P
