Your drying towel will turn the colour of your microfibres! Hah

I wash all my microfibres after 1 use but my drying towel is just put out on the line to dry and is washed if it gets dirty or after every 4th use.

Be careful not to wash microfibres and drying cloths with clothes. You don't want all that lint in them.

    I need some help lads,

I try to do everything the correct way when washing but:

2 weeks ago gave the car a treatment and did the following:

Snow foam - BH auto foam
2bm wash - meguiars shampoo conditioner (the green one)
    De tar
    De iron
    Clay with clay mitt
    2bm wash
    Open hose rinse
    Dry with mm
Meguiars ultimate compound with hand application
AG SRP (edit did not use this product this time)
Wipe down with ipa on soft mf cloth
Applied & hand buffed Collinite 845
    Fast glass
    PERL on the plastic stuff

It looked amazing - would definitely react well to a DA but I was content.

Now yesterday I washed it -

    Snowfoam, dwell, power rinse
2bm wash with a meguiars thick mitt:
    http://www.halfords.ie/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductMobileDisplay?catalogId=15551&langId=-1&categoryId=212444&productId=199095&storeId=11101

Then dried with my micro madness -

Now it's covered in loads of light swirls, and looks crap in the right light (to me, everyone else thinks I'm crazy :p )

Where am I going wrong? Surely shouldn't have such swirls after one wash :(

Do you mean more swirls have appeared? Or that you felt that you had done a job removing them and now there are new swirls?

Some have appeared, but they're very light, i would almost say they are within the layer of wax, rather than the paint ?

Well, it's hard to say for sure...perhaps some of the product that has hiding/masking/filling your swirls has been removed and thus beginning to show some of the swirls beneath.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 111 ✭✭Arbo94

Correct me if I'm wrong but srp is only a filler and a wipe down with IPA would remove the srp right? I know your issue is after the wash but surely there was no need for the IPA wipe down after a filler product.

Could well be, I was going off the idea that I should wipe down with ipa or the collinite wouldn't bond properly or last as long as it should with whatever polish residue would be left over.

Well SRP works on the basis that it has fillers and that they shouldn't be wiped off with IPA, but rather locked in with a protection product, ideally within the AG range so you know it will work.... Extra Gloss Protection or HD Wax.

However, given you were putting on Collinite, yes, using IPA would have improved it's chances of bonding, but you've removed the fillers. The Collinite would have a certain amount of filling properties too, and perhaps that a little more product has come off since buffing.
Did you apply two layers of Collinite?

Actually I may be mistaken this time, going back on my photos (always take pics of products used) I didn't use the SRP this time, used the ultimate compound then IPA then straight to 845,

Only one layer though unfortunately didn't get time to apply the 2nd, I was going to after yesterday's wash but was too annoyed with the swirls

Have you any photos of the swirls? It must be from the collinite if you used an IPA after the compound, could it be from it curing too fast while applying and leaving tiny lines of wax behind after buffing? I know this has happened to me with fusso before and the lines look a little like swirls. Maybe try a quick detailer when removing the wax if you have one

Unfortunately no, I tried but the camera doesn't pick em up, I'll wait till dark and get it under the halogen light and should be able to get some. I mean it's not bad, it looks perfect to the reasonable eye, but my eye is unreasonable.

Do you mean a use a quick detailer while buffing off the wax? Is demon shine a quick detailer?

No he means if it's streaky use a QD to help buff remaining cured wax

Curran, can you recommend any Liquid Wax and pad combo for a D/A application, something with half decent life and gloss?

I would imagine Collinite would go on nicely with a DA and black pad. Are there buffing pads available for DA's?

Why do you want to apply it with a DA.

Given that you are using the DA, what about CarPro Essence - knock out all the jobs in one - finishing polish, fills remaining swirls, gloss enhancer and protection....all in one step!
Essentially its like doing the jeweling step; but everything is done when you buff off the product when you've done the section you polished. No need to wash the car, and apply protection, its all done!
Yes, its a little expensive, but for what you can do all in one step, its a massive time saver, so covers the price!

Mainly for when I do jobs like vans and the like, D/A is handier application and large panels I find! Essence is a good shout actually, forgot about that!

Has anyone got knowledge of stone chip repairs in regards to polishing over them? Can the paint then be removed by the compounding/polishing steps?

Quick newbie question lads, I've got a number of handprints on my car around the doors from previous owner and am told the Auto Glym Super Resin Polish should do the trick and if not there is a paint restorer. Question is, I washed car today using 2BM but didn't have enough time to apply the polish. If I did it tomorrow evening would that be OK or is does it need to be done as soon as the car drys off?

One other question, I ended up with some wet streaks that dried out on the bonnet (not sure if i'm describing the effect correctly). Would I be ok to just wipe them off and hose it down again tomorrow before using the polish. Would hope to polish entire car but my priority is the handprints so if i have to wait a while before doing the bonnet I don't mind.

Polish won't take hand prints off especially if sun cream.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,377 ✭✭✭Curran

Polishing can be done at any time once the surface is clean.

Dry the car quicker to prevent wet streaks, even mist the hose over a washed area if you feel it will be dry before you finish washing

SRP might remove the sun cream marks, unlikely though. At best, it will hide them for a while. Machine polishing is the only definite solution, though there are others ways people will tell you to remove them, which may or may not work.

Thanks. Yeah i've got both Auto Glymn products but was told to try the resin first before trying the Paint restorer? So would I be better giving the whole car a polish with the super resin and then go over the hand prints with the Paint restorer? When you say machine polishing I presume you just mean a polisher from halfords or the likes?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,377 ✭✭✭Curran

No, the polisher in Halfords is only a buffer - you'd need proper machine polish and a rotary or Dual Action machine. Try the Super Resin Polish first, and report back! ;)

I miss having time for detailing, it's like I never get a chance anymore.

Damn you parenthood. The funny thing is, my sister in law said I wouldnt be out much once the child came along, and I laughed it off. How right she was, damn it.
