Right, apologies for the delay in getting back to ye on this. Here's everyone I can see who's expressed interest:

Extrasupervery - 20m @ 12.30 (who is happy to run without a pace buddy as she is "interminibly slow")
    kittyclaws - 20m @ 11.30 or slower
    The Black Oil - 20m @ 10.45 - 11.15
    A Neurotic - 20m @ 10.00 - 10.30
    Pomplamousse - ?20m @ 10.30
    Maximus - 18m @ 9.45 - 10.30
    TheMuppet
    kin9pin

Have I missed anyone? Didn't spot planned milage or paces for TheMuppet or kin9pin, sorry if I missed them! Anyone else who may be interested is of course more than welcome.

From an eyeball it seems that a ~10.30 pace would accommodate Maximus, Pomplamousse, and myself. Unfortunately there's not a huge amount of overlap with the other planned paces. Is there much flexibility with the paces posted?

It would be nice for the whole group to meet anyway. We can arrange to meet at 9am to start and maybe afterwards too for flapjacks and LSR reports.

I'll see you there for 9. Even though I'm in a state of cringe at the thoughts of getting up at 7! :pac:

Good luck to you all on your first 20 miler, take it easy.

We'll have to make sure we all meet up on the day.

    Hi there,

Just wanted to thank ye all for your help and advice a few days back.

Finally saw my physio last night and figured out I have peroneal tendonitis. Never heard of it before yet had all the classic s&s of it. Got some good work done on it with dry needling and massage (which hurt like never before) but maaaaaan I feel good today. I'm taking myself out of the 3/4 on his advice because it would just be silly to jeaprodise everything now. Gonna try a few light runs this weekend and if things go well I'll aim for a long one myself next weekend and taper from there. I've come too far to throw everything away but my focus has shifted from doing a marathon in less than 5 hours to finishing the marathon.

Thanks again for taking the time to answer me...I know I've come in on a thread that is well established so it meant alot. Best of luck to ye all on the day and hope any of you that are struggling with injuries like myself get to and through the marathon safely.

I went for a run last night and felt ok. Delighted! I only did about 3.5 miles, but still.

I'm going to try a longer one tomorrow and see how I feel. If all goes well, and I can run pain free, what should I do for the next few weeks, given that I've now missed nearly 5 weeks of training? My goal is just to finish now.

Delighted to hear you're on the mend. Rejoin your plan next week and ignore what you missed? You're not going to make much fitness gains in the next 3 weeks based on everything I've been reading! But you've plenty of training behind you to get around the course.

That's brilliant news G! I'm sure nop and the crew will have some ideas. What did your physio say?

After the marathon, how long before I'm allowed to do intervals at 5k pace?

Went to the game last night with wife and 3 kids.. was walking over to Lansdowne Rd via lane from Serpentine Av and was so busy telling kids to hold up and not snot themselves that I missed a kerb and had to do the quick arch back and re-balance before ankle snapped.. All was good, wife gasped.. I cursed! Foot was sore for minute or two but more pride hurt than anything.

Just be careful out there.. the most innocuous things can happen in daily life that could cause heartbreak! Best of Luck in the LSR's this weekend. I'm out for 18M at 7AM so apologies cannot make the meet up.

great article in the IT. Thanks for posting paddydriver.
Sat here having a coffee and sambo for lunch in an Insomnia coffee shop and started to have a read back thru when the thread all started 6 months ago.. It's like reading about our first days in school..

As we begin tapering soon, it would be interesting to maybe hear from all those that started out in the thread and let us know how it's going and what their current thoughts are and how they've maybe revised targets up or down. Obviously don't want to be stirring up any bad news or upsetting anyone that's had to depart due to injury etc so apologies if it comes across bad..

As an aside, just for below article in my FB feed so might a light read for you all.

Best of Luck in the weeks ahead and here's to happy miles.. ☺

    Hi all,
I have a free day on Sunday as there is a surprise baby shower happening in our house for a relation (boyz not invited :) )and was looking to do a HM (or a decent long run) .

The nearest HM seems to be the one in Ferns, is anyone else doing it or has done it in the past? I tried to enter the Athlone 3/4 but it is closed and the race organiser couldn't fit me in..... short notice but chanced my arm anyway

Any other HM's on that people are aware of??

I already have that fear. I thought madness wasn't supposed to start until taper time. Someone in work tapped my leg (very lightly) with a food tray today and I gave out to him:D

Hello Faithmc - super glad to hear you're feeling pretty excellent today. For this weekend, I'd focus on some slow miles, aim for a decent time on your feet as opposed to a distance. Assuming you're feeling well next week, do your usual mid-week runs and aim for something around 14-15M at the weekend, and then taper from there.

Glad you found the thread useful, the 2016 novices are an awesome bunch [ahem - removes a spec of dust from eye], but you're not going anywhere! Please hang around the thread, post your weekly updates and questions you might have, and we hope to see you afterwards - or at least a race report of the day itself. The very best of luck!

Listen to your body and do the sensible thing from now on in. As has been said before, you were going very well up until now but 5 weeks is quite a long time. Focus on time on your feet - so maybe 8 miles tomorrow and some recovery on Sunday. Then I would step right back in the remainder of the boards plan, Monday rest, three mid-week runs, and a decent enough run next weekend, depending on how you do. Go even slower than you have been doing on your long runs, as you'll be going slower on the day itself. Glad to have you back!

Isn't the saying, a day off for every mile raced? :)

Kingpin said that to me last week on our run.. I winced! The thought of 26 days off running! Let's get to DCM first and then plan out afterwards but honestly I think it would be a recovery run for me on the Monday then a few days off, but back to running by Thursday.

Anyone entering the Berlin 2017 lottery...

Just wondering is there a plan to put a pre-marathon checklist together at any stage? I'd be happy to help, could use the DCM 2016 Novices Google sheet for it. I think it would be a good place to have all our checklist items so they are in one place, and we can add them as we think of them? What to you reckon Nop and everyone?

One I'd like to add is something that caught me out twice now on my longest long runs. On my watch, there's a night mode which leaves the light on the display on the whole time when you are running. It chews the battery and my watch died on my two 21 mile runs. I don't want this to happen on the big day obviously (my old watch died at about 25 miles in the only other marathon I did lol!) so it would be a good reminder to get everyone to check their watches the night before to make sure they are charged, and have the correct settings etc..

I think that saying applies to when you should race again, no? You could probably attempt a session a bit sooner.

Having said that, I'm nearly two weeks post-marathon myself and won't be going near a session for another week or two. I'm not sticking to that plan for the sake of it either - I genuinely don't feel up to it physically. The legs are grand, but the effort levels feel very high. I'll think about sessions when easy running feels easy again!

Good luck to everyone tomorrow whether be it 20 miles; 18 miles or easy miles after injury.

Sunday again for me this weekend

Cool, thanks nop98. My physio suggested having an extra rest day each week, so I think I'll just do four runs per week, and maybe keep swimming one day per week.

I'm feeling really nervous for tomorrow's run, in case it hurts! I'll get it done early and let you know.

Annoying news. Had a little medical test today and I've been advised not to run or train until I get a medical thing checked out and fully cleared.

Not going to be able to do the LSR after all, which sucks. I will however be happy to meet people and provide flapjacks/encouragement as required!

    Sorry guys.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44 faithmc

Thank you for the kind invitation Nop98...I'll keep ye posted after the weekend!!!!

I'm feeling really good tonight so gonna ice the calf and ankle some more and if I am pain free tomorrow, I'll try whatever distance up to 5km I can manage at a slow pace. If there's even a hint of pain I won't go or if it starts, I'll stop. I'm gutted to be missing the 3/4 and very jealous that the hubby is going to do a local 10 mile event on Sunday instead but I'm wishing and praying that patience will pay off and the 30th will be my reward.

Your advice is exactly my plan for the coming week so I've got everything (except my peroneal tendons) crossed!!!!!!!!!!

Good luck to you all doing your last long run or the 3/4 this weekend.
