Technically the 3rd season of Survivor in Australia, but the first since 2006.

24 contestants, 55 days and it looks like it will follow the Parsons/Burnett format (but super-sized). Hosted by Jonathan LaPaglia.

Starts in August (no specific date yet).

Well we both know how well they do reality TV down under Mr. E I might be willing to give this a go. Haven't watched Survivor in 10 years :D

This looks good. The attempt the Aussies made to do Survivor years ago wasn't great, but they've learned a lot about making good Reality TV since then so should be interesting.

Premiere is the 21st of August

Piss poor trailer but wont say no to more Survivor, thanks for the tip.

In case anyones wondering the next American Survivor is Survivor: Millennials vs. Gen X and it starts on September 21st.

2 seasons of Survivor and an online season of Big Brother all running concurrently.

    This should be interesting.

    Ten in Australia

    Spotted that,is that available here?

Unfortunately not. The only channel that would potentially pick it up over here is TG4, but if they do it'll probably be well after it has originally aired - don't think any of the UK stations show regular Survivor, so unlikely they'll go for the Aussie version.

It'll most likely be available on all the usual online methods of questionable legality and that we're not allowed to discuss here... ;)

Even if it was being shown on tv Id still wait for it in the usual places, Ive stayed up and streamed the final a couple of times but never again, the amount of ads is actually insane. Australian tv not much better.

First episode was great, there's a good mix of characters in there - don't want to say much in case people haven't realised it has started yet, but it's using the US format, so it's the Survivor we know and love. The host even looks pretty similar to Jeff Probst.

Episode 2 is on tomorrow and it looks like they'll be doing two a week (Sundays and Mondays - just as an FYI, because Australia are ahead of us time wise, the episodes tend to be out pretty early in the day)...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,533 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Enjoyed that a lot. It's authentic Survivor, down to the music, titles, cinematography, challenges and format.

LaPaglia has obviously being studying Probst too. He did a great job.

Hopefully they introduce some idols and stuff to shake things up and add some more drama.

I knew after 20 minutes who would be going home, and I was right. :)

The second episode was decent too. Looks like immunity idols start next week.

Wasn't a big fan of the first episode, really enjoyed the second

It looks like they're upping to 3 episodes a week (Sunday, Monday, Tuesday)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,503 ✭✭✭✭Also Starring LeVar Burton

Wow! Episode 5 - even I was blindsided on this one...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,009 ✭✭✭✭titan18

That was a great episode. The whole tribal was just one shock after another. Great fun

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,130 ✭✭✭mel.b

Just started watching the first episode...55days ...there'll be nothing left of them!

Much better already than the very first Australian survivor series (wouldn't be hard to beat that though!)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,533 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

The last few episodes have been great. The lies and scheming (and backtracking) around the idols, the drama at the challenges (particularly the tower building), the stupidity of wearing an idol at tribal, the switcheroo combined tribal in episode 5.

It makes the last season of US Survivor look tired and jaded.

The Aussies know how to do reality TV really well.

I have a feeling that the best is yet to come.

Difficult to follow this thread as I've no idea what the most recent episode is. 6? 7?

Is there anyway we can highlight how far people are along or is there a consistent schedule now?

While I appreciate they've stuck closely to the tried and tested formula I can't say I'm overly happy with the deviations unlike others.

Let's see if I make it to the seasons end. Will be difficult when the US version returns.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,533 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

3 a week for this week and next week anyway.

Episode 6 was yesterday and Episode 7 has probably just aired in Australia (so will be here later today).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,964 ✭✭✭✭Thargor

Just can't get into this for some reason.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,009 ✭✭✭✭titan18

God I hate Nick, really comes across like such an assh0le.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,503 ✭✭✭✭Also Starring LeVar Burton

What I like about this version is that not only are the episodes longer so we get to know the castaways a bit more early on, but because the season is also longer and there's 3 episodes a week, there's much more room for twists and turns in the game. Not that any incarnation can ever be as good as the US version, but this holds up pretty well alongside it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,383 ✭✭✭S.M.B.

I much prefer the shorter abridged version.

The pre merge part of the show can always be a bit of a slog and this felt more so than usual. I guess we are really only at Day 1 of a survivor US season know which is interesting given we are familiar with mist the cast.

The aussies really know how to drag the **** out of a reality show format. It's too much for me.

A few twists and red herrings could easily have been left on the editing floor. An episode without a tribal, medevac or quit feels like a uneccesary indulgence.

For me more Survivor is never a bad thing - especially as it's not replacing the US version or anything, it's in addition to it, and I've watched Survivor from Season 1, I've re-watched seasons, I've played some really good online versions of the game, so I love it and the more Survivor the better for me.

I'm quite enjoying it. I'm looking forward to the days Kat and Nick are voted out, both are pretty sh1t people. I'm enjoying everyone else on it bar them.

I don't mind Kat or Nick - they're not my favourites but they're interesting characters. Rohan and Phoebe are the only ones this season that I really haven't liked at all.

One of the dumbest moves I've ever seen in any iteration of the game ever, buffoon.

55 days is obscene, those that make it that far will end up having ptsd.

I like Christie and Nick but Lee looks a good bet for the win.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,292 ✭✭✭GreNoLi

I was hasty with my previous comment as I turned off the video after the votes were read, glad Kat was subsequently harpooned.

Tribes need a shake up to avoid a washout, Andrew is all talk, his eventual comeuppance should be entertaining.

Can't believe they voted out Craig. They really don't want to win challenges do they

There's got to be a merge or re-organisation of the tribes surely as the numbers are now so uneven. So if they merge it won't have been a bad decision as Craig would have been strong in the individual immunity challenges and he seems like a likeable guy who would get jury votes.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,292 ✭✭✭GreNoLi

How the hell did she 'find' that idol, I call shenanigans.

Hope Kristie wins, would be surprised if a female didn't win it.

A lot of bitchiness on Sanaapu, felt bad for Kylie.

Wonder if they'll they merge at 12.

You'd think so, but there's 14 left atm. I reckon they won't merge til 12, so 2 more Vavau to go, so having Craig left instead of Sue would have been far better for them.

Craig has more ties with Jennah Louise too to pull her over, and Nick hates him so will want to vote for him first.

That last episode sort of ruined the season for me a bit. Host was an ass at tribal council and that twist was just retarded

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,383 ✭✭✭S.M.B.

Another bizarre twist to add to the mix. Starting to feel like I'm watching big brother Canada with the over eagerness to medle with a winning formula.

Pheobes game just got blown up for for the sake of some manufactured cheap and easy drama. Oddly felt like an anti climax in the end.

Not sure if I'll have the stamina to last the entire season if we start to loose certain players.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,503 ✭✭✭✭Also Starring LeVar Burton

I don't mind the twist in itself, if Vavau had one that Immunity and got to steal a player from the dominating Tribe it would have been interesting - the twist fell down when Sanapu won and now we have 10 on one tribe and only 4 on the other.

I don't have a problem with Australian Survivor tweaking with the formula every now and again as it's its own entity, has a decent cast, and there's still the good old Probst Survivor to look forward to twice a year. It's kinda like an alternate universe version and enjoyable in itself - once you accept it's not going to be a 100% carbon copy of the US version then it's much easier to enjoy it for what it is.

And this is exactly what Big Brother Canada is to Big Brother US. It all gets tiring very quickly.

This version will hopefully make me appreciate the US version a little more. There are some small nuances that I find they've missed which greatly reduces my enjoyment of the show. And the big twists tend to favour those who play a floating game as opposed to the strategic players that I tend to shout for.

Roll on the season premiere tonight.

Glad to see I'm not the only Irish person watching. Conner is one of my favorites even though I think he'll be merge boot.

Nick is clearly the most interesting character left can't wait to see the madness he causes.

Phoebe was probably the most dynamic player that I've seen on a Survivor since maybe Tony Vlachos.

Opening confessional strongly hinted at who was going home yet I sat through 1h 9m more of dragged out drama.

Think I might download these episodes and watch one a week. It's too much now that the US version is back.

I just gave up on it tbh, it doesnt hold my interest at all and Ive been Survivor obsessed since Richard Hatch in S1.

I'm up to date (apart from today).

I'm enjoying it, but it would be far better if it wasn't so one-sided.

Hate this 'good guy' nonsense, old school mentality.

    Hope Nick/Kristie win.

I liked that tribal council. Lee and Sammie got quite fun

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,533 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Such an improvement since the merge.

If Nick survives through the next 2 TCs, it'll be a miracle.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,503 ✭✭✭✭Also Starring LeVar Burton

Sam would want to get down off his high horse - saying Nick doesn't deserve to be there ahead of Kate or others voted out is just a dickish thing to say. Whether Sam (or the audience for that matter) like Nick or not is irrelevant - he deserves his spot just as much as anyone else sitting there at Tribal. Therein lies the beauty of the game of Survivor, it's not about honesty and hippie love (would be fairly boring if it was), lying, cheating, and playing dirty is all part of the gameplay and some of the most loved players in the history are the most devious and conniving - Russell Hantz, Boston Rob, Jerri Manthey etc. are all proof of that.
A couple of years down the line when people think back on this season of Survivor, people will remember Nick, but will more than likely have forgotten Sam and his "good guys" mentality.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,383 ✭✭✭S.M.B.

I caved in and am up to date. The 40-ish minute episodes help.

Found some of the editing really odd this week. I don't get how one week we see Brooke and the mean girls cackling away saying how their tight three have the game in their hands and then the next episode opens with a Brooke confessional saying that Sammy is her closest partner both in terms of strategy and on a personal level.

It's left me a tad confused.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,383 ✭✭✭S.M.B.

Not sure if it's the cast, the edit, the backfiring of the twists or just something cultural but the post merge run has been infuriating.

The one plus is I've genuinely no idea who's going to win as the individual arcs are so confusing I can't see any obvious winner.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,130 ✭✭✭mel.b

I'm two episodes behind at the moment, but has there been an american season where so many girls have been so phyisically strong in immunity challenges? Yes the challenges have probably suited the girls better but they have still put in some amaxing performances.
