Altuve for me has had the best season and probably deserves the MVP but would be surprised if a Red Sox player doesn't pick it up if they win the division.

I actually think Ortiz could be picked ahead of him if we win the division. And I'd be ok with that. He's been superb, not just superb for his age, straight-up superb.

I don't think DH's tend to win MVP - no one is talking about Encarnacion for MVP even though his numbers are incredible.

A batting average of .267 is not going to win you an MVP also just on a quick glance he has twice the amount of strikeouts and just a couple more hits the big papi in more at bats.

I get your point and accept it but in fairness EE has played a lot of 1st base this year, especially in the 2nd half.

He hasn't got MVP numbers though in terms of his average or strike out rate. Super player and having another great year but Altuve, Trout, Betts and even Ortiz have been outstanding.

Awful way for the Mets to lose last night. Great catch though! At least the Cardinals and Giants lost too so it's as you were there.

Boston with the ALE locked up now probably don't you think? Still tight enough for the AL WC though. Big win for Seattle last night to keep them in it.

ALE is as good as over. Red Sox just keep finding ways to win and Toronto and Baltimore will still drop games. Unless Boston collapse against Tampa Bay and the Yankees its over. They have been streaky all year though and those are two free swinging teams at the minute. The Rays have been excellent since the Allstar break.

You were right about the Mets against Atlanta Jack! I cant see them missing out but who knows, one thing 100% I dont want the Giants to suddenly find form again. Hate them in the playoffs

Also looking at Gary Sanchez current run what he is doing is absolutely unbelievable.

He would be on track for 60+ homers at this rate in a regular season.

Mets have 7 games left v Philly and 3 v Miami. The last 6 on the road. Miami have history of being spoilers for the Mets having beaten them on the last days of '07 and '08 to deny them a playoff spot.

The Cardinals probably have the toughest games left. 3 @ Cubs and then 2 series at home v the Reds and Pirates. The Reds are rubbish so that'll be a sweep probably but I'd imagine the Pirates will play them hard in the last series to try and keep them out.

The Giants have San Diego and Colorado next which they should fancy and then they finish up with a home series v LA. The Dodgers should be winding down and setting up their rotation for the playoffs but I'd imagine if they have the chance to keep them out of the playoffs they'll aim to do so.

3 days ago I was confident enough that the Mets would sneak in but coming off the back of getting swept at home by Atlanta, I'm not as confident now.

Hopefully if they can go 7-3 down the stretch, one of the other 2 will drop more and that'll be enough.

A game 163 being required wouldn't surprise me though. And if my team weren't involved, I'd be hoping for a 3 way tie and chaos ensuing.

    Kevin Maas!

Yeah that's probably fair, I didn't realise how many SO he has had. Looking at past MVP winners though, it doesn't look like DH's are generally in the mix and pitchers only win it if they are having an exceptional season. It really looks like you need to be an all round player to win it. Even 1B doesn't get much of a look in.

    Kevin Maas!

Consider Maas great run was 21 in 79 and Sanchez has hit 19 in 45 games ... its simply incredible.

Not easy being a Mets fan. After having a walk off HR being brought back on Tuesday, last night was equally dramatic but in a good way this time.

But these expanded rosters are driving me nuts. I know it went 11 but the Mets used 28 players and the Phillies 22 last night. Ridiculous.

Giants win as well and the Cards were idle so as you were in the NL WC race.

A couple of big wins for Detroit yesterday in the AL putting them into the second WC spot.

This weekend is going to be great!

2x sweeps of 4-game series against division opposition in a row, I'm normally quite pessimistic until everything is mathematically done and dusted but it does look like Red Sox will take the division.

You have to go back to 2011 to find a year when Red Sox haven't finished either top or bottom of the divison!

    2012 - bottom
    2013 - top
    2014 - bottom
    2015 - bottom
    2016 - top*

    All or nothing!

Wow. Just, wow. Pressure's through the roof. Starting to have trouble sleeping!

Favorable schedule, but so what. Every team's going to be playing as hard as possible for the next week, whether to get in, or thwart another team's attempts.

Just lost Matz, probably for the rest of the year. So, the makeshift rotation continues.

I (obviously!) hope I'm proved wrong but it pains me to say I think the Blue Jays will miss the playoffs. :( We'll see.

Tough run in alright but with a bit of luck, Boston will be setting up their roster for the playoffs and/or maybe resting a couple of starters in that last series. The Baltimore series will be very interesting.

Check out Vin Scully's 20 greatest stories and anecdotes on theScore. Great stuff altogether! I hope he writes an autobiography, I'd read it (maybe he has already though?)

I must admit I've always been a huge fan. He and Leafs commentator Joe Bowen are my favourites. None come close to my all-time fave however, the amazing Howard Cosell. I grew up hearing that man's voice on tv in Canada throughout the 70s. What a voice.

My least favourite is that White Sox fella, Hawk somebody. He's bloody awful.

They looked a bit better in the Marriners series. The frustrating thing is this team clearly have played to their potential yet. Either start now or it's going to be curtains. More worried about the Yankees series then the Orioles, we've been good against the Orioles this year but I can see New York taking atleast 2 games in this series. Going to the series finale on Monday and trying to get a Orioles game in too!

FFS...now Noah Syndegaard is out of the Mets rotation.

He's got a strep throat so it'll probably only one start but at the start of the season the rotation for the second half of the season was supposed to be Syndegaard, Harvey, de Grom, Matz and Wheeler. Instead it's Colon, Lugo, Gsellman, Ynoah and for one start Gilmartin.

There are some awful homers out there. My least favourite is the colour guy for the Nats, F.P. Santangelo. Some of the spin he puts on things is terrible

He might miss the WC game, too.

Magic number 8 for clinching the postseason! Woohoo!

Joey Bats hasn't has the best year but still has an eye for the spectacular. Two big HR's in 3 games. Yankees haven't scored in 27 innings of baseball!

Yep, I thought he was gonna bring out the bat flip for that homer, he knew it was gone the moment he hit it. Jays getting great pitching as well, just when they need It!

Terrible news breaking that Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez has been killed in a boating accident. I'm in shock. Ever since he came on the scene and destroyed the Mets in his first start, he's been my favourite pitcher to watch. He had tremendous stuff.

Horrible start to a Sunday. Puts WC chases and division titles into perspective.

Sad news I think today's Marlins & Braves has been canceled and wasn't Fernandez due to pitch today but his start was pushed back to tomorrow

    Yeah the Marlins have confirmed.

"The Miami Marlins organisation is devastated by the tragic loss of Jose Fernandez. Our thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family at this very difficult time.

Today's game against the Atlanta Braves has been cancelled."
