So for a level 10 gym I would have to beat the lowest Cp mon in there 100 times in a row? (50000/500)
Considering the lowest one is invariably 2000+ Cp about four of my mom would fit just to do it once. And then someone would just level it back up.

I'm pretty sure you need to do this as a group of 5+ players, no?

To take down a 50k gym would indeed take ages by yourself, even with 6 dragonites. It's very hard to get a gym up to that level though.

Not sure if it's spoofers or addicts but every gym in my area is like that, 3-4 dragonites usually, Lapras, Snorlax, gyardos. Then again they probably do take them over as a group so it makes sense to have to take them back as one.

There are many techniques, you can go brute force (throw your 6 highest CP in and hope for the best), or choose by type. Certain pokemon are weak to others, in my experince, with the exception of Snorelax, they all have serious weaknesses. (Snorelax does have a weakness to fighting types but all my fighting types are circa 900cp, I haven't had a chance to try my Machamp yet)

    When training a gym:
If however you beat the defender with a lower CP you get much higher prestige. eg. a 1500 Flareon defeated by an 1100 Vaoporeon will give you circa 650 points.
You really need to understand the weakness of the defenders and how to dodge special attacks.
Here's a decent video showing how to use type advantage and dodge to outplay higher CP pokemon...1000 parasect beating a 2000 vaporeon.

No, if you did that (52,000) you would take the entire Gym, as the gym drops each level the weakest defender gets kicked out. So to remove only the first guy you would need to beat him 24 times (assuming the gym had full prestige of 52,000). Some people use a pokemon with a massive weakness (Parasect, Magikarp, Poliwag etc.) as the lowest defender, making it easy to beat and level up. But that weakness works both ways. You could beat a defender 20 times in a couple of minutes and use just 1 or 2 potions to knock the gym down 12,000.

But you get the highest reward for beating the entire gym, you can get up to 6500 points per battle.
Gyms are stacked in favour of attackers, you can dodge, defenders can not, you can look at the weaknesses and choose your pokemon accordingly.

It is easier and much quicker to take gyms in groups but it's not difficult solo, just time consuming.

Prestige controls the number of defenders that a gym can have. It's broken down like this:

    Gym Level Minimum Prestige required
    1 0
    2 2000
    3 4000
    4 8000
    5 12000
    6 16000
    7 20000
    8 30000
    9 40000
    10 50000

    When attacking a gym:
For each defender you defeat you knock 500 points from the gym and 1500 for defeating the entire gym.
For every level you reduce the gym you kick the lowest CP defender out, making it easier to defeat the second time around.

This one is a little more intricate, to level up a gym you need to beat the defenders using only 1 pokemon. You could brute force this, and beat the defender with a higher CP attacker but you only add 100cp for that approach, it would be very slow and cumbersome.
If however you beat the defender with a lower CP you get much higher prestige. eg. a 1500 Flareon defeated by an 1100 Vaoporeon will give you circa 650 points.
You really need to understand the weakness of the defenders and how to dodge special attacks.

While snorlax has a weakness to fighting he has moves that are super effective vs them too and has way more life, so he is just a beast really.

Just caught a 1247 Dragonair beside Baggot St bridge and also 2 Dratini's along the canal this morning, after 72.1km of walking finally have enough candies for my Dragonite

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 36,034 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

I think I know one gym that might be level 6, if they haven't bumper it up again. So I should look at the weakest one in terms of CP or in terms of type?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,417 ✭✭✭Diemos

Sweet, I'm still 18 candies short.....I generally catch 2 to 3 dratini's per week, so it's taking a lot of effort not to make him my buddy.

Type rather than CP, if you post the list up here we can tell you how best to tackle it. :D

    New dilemma

    My 1247 Dragonair will evolve into a 2531 - 2593 Dragonite but has only 51% IV (15 att, 8 def, 0 sta)

    My 675 Dratini will evolve into 1201 - 1248 Dragonair therefore a 2438 - 2595 Dragonite but has 69% IV (15 att, 15 def, 1 sta)

Have exactly 100 candies, do i wait and evolve my Dratini and also hope to catch something bigger or just evolve my Dragonair to a decent Dragonite that will prob be slightly stronger than Dratini evolve and use any extra candies I get to Power up?

Calculate your rate of dratini catching/walking and figure out how long it should take to get the 25 candies. Factor in how much craic you'll be missing out on by not having a dragonite during this time.

Anyone else think dragonites look stupid? The lower forms are all sleek and sexy but the dragonite is a dumb looking orange hape.
Then again, you could day that about Donald trump.

    Nice dilemma.

I would evolve now, there is very little difference in those IV's, and what difference there is would be nulled by the fact that the Dragonair is a higher CP.

    Yup.

Still haven't caught a nidoran (f) but have caught a Nidorina. Mr Mime has been in and around phibsborough shopping centre all week so far around this time. Electabuzz in and around Mary Street and Jervis Street near Smyths twice this week too but none have spawned, not showing get up on Pokestumble neither so none are nesting just visiting those areas it seems, Magmar twice now at or near Glasnevin cemetery after 5pm both times my battery ran out during battle so he is seen but not caught.

I hope sooner or later if and when the trading is brought in that personal breeding is also brought in via day care like the ds/gba games allow. Would be nice to be able to farm your own eggs from what you have caught.

Sent in my carnival of freaks on the gym. Gyardos was the lowest of the ten guardians with 1985 CP. My fifth mon got him into the red but just when I was about to bring in the mime to finish him off I got. Time's up message. Wtf? There's a Time limit?

What Pokemon do you think you'll simply never get?

While there's a miniscule chance of getting a Snorlax, Lapras or aerodactyl, I'll hold out hope for that lucky 10km egg, however there are a few that are just not going to happen.

Kabutops, only one kabuto ever seen and none hatched. Not gonna happen.
Charizard, I should get a Charmeleon as some point but there's not a hope in hell of finding 100 more candies.
Machamp, same as, although I just got a machoke.
Taurus, kangashkhan, far-fetched, I'm not going that far abroad for the foreseeable future.

The rest are doable, if I can keep playing and keep interested long enough.

kabuto nests was in raheny area (st anne's park) not sure if that is still the case.

the new buddy system let's you get candies when you walk for a certain km. so you will get your charizard and machamp using this method.

Chansey and Aerodactyl: will require luck.

The rest I can get from walking...... a lot of bloody walking :p

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 36,034 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

Raheny is about 1200km from and I think that nest has rhyhorn now :D
They might move some nests around again, I for got it about that, although the only nests I've ever seen here were rattata and Pidgee.
No buddies for me with my Chinese phone unfortunately. I guess I might change phone at some point.

Another anomaly here I guess. I have seen more grimers than drowzees. Apart from when I was in Ireland briefly.

You mean you've already hatched Tauros Farfetchd and Kangaskhan??!?:pac:

I just don't understand the prestige thing at all. What benefit is it to me to raise or lower the prestige of a gym?

Im red team, if I take over a gym or add to a gym, I usually try and raise the prestige of it so there's a free space for someone else.
Harder to raise the prestige than it is to take one over though
