Have only just downloaded the app this week so I am pretty far behind you guys on a mere level 10.

Have some questions if you guys might know the answers.

    1. Should I power up my pokemon before I evolve it to the next stage?

    2. The pokemon in sightings, any way of actually knowing where?!

    3. I have spent a lot(too much) powering up my pidgeot to 700, should I just stop powering them up and wait until I get a better one? I never have any star dust left

    4. Is there a map of where pokemon are or an app? I only have 36 pokemon and have only seen 36 too

    Thanks in advance

Never power up until you get to level 20+, 25 even. You'll get bigger mons the higher level you go and it's a waste of stardust using it now.

There are a few apps that help track and scan of you look around.

    Where are you hunting mainly?

Drumcondra/Phibsboro/IFSC are where I am most of the time, often take different routes home but rarely finding any new ones.

Have wasted so much star dust on the pidgeot, glad I can stop now.

The Liffey along the keys, grand canal, St. Anne's park, donnybrook and north bull island are great spots if you can get about a bit.

Hatch as many eggs as you can, too.

Not IV, but the first Dragonite I caught was a mighty 47CP

Jaysus........Im still only at 308 Magikarp candy total so far!
Am heading to a port this weekend, so hoping to find the missing 15 or so I need as well as maybe get a better specimen than 148 CP 84% IV.

Very nice, 2 rare pokemon to find however. Good luck in your quest.

Opinions conflict. They offer a slight advantage, approx 10% for a 15 stat versus a 10 stat pokemon. So the answer is yes, however whether you will really notice this very often when CP, pokemon type and move set is also in the mix is up for debate.

I think these questions have been answered but I'll try to give you a bit of extra info.

1.only put 2km eggs in your infinity incubator, never put them into your 3 use incubators save them for 5 and 10k eggs.

    2. Save your stardust.

    3. If a pokemon has a double evolve (you can tell by the pokedex)

    4. Google the Eevee rename trick (don't evlove an eevee til you are level 20 (if you can wait))

    5. Google Pidgey stacking using your lucky egg to level up quickly.

Seems to be down at the moment.

IV's can add up to 15% to the strength of a pokemon. It's a boost but it's not all that people make it out to be.
    A 1500 cp vaporeon with 0 IV's will wipe the floor against a 1500 cp Flareon with 100% IV's.

I've seen this mentioned a few times. Is there some difference between the incubators? If I have 2km egg and a 10km egg and two empty incubators, does it make a difference which egg goes in which incubator?

NO. Save your stardust. As you go up in trainer level you will find higher CP pokemon. Your aim at level 10 should be try to catch as many as possible in order to get to level 20 as quickly as possible. Dont worry about the CP of your pokemon you catch, they are just a means to getting you XP to level up and fill your pokedex with new entries.

In fact a good method (in hindsight) for Pokemon with double evolutions is to wait until you have enough candy to do both evolves in one go. The theory is that by the time you get the 100 candy for the 2nd evolve you will come across a better specimen to use the 25 candy on for the 1st evolve.
Of course you may not have the patience to wait and just want to add the new pokemon to your pokedex ASAP!!!
    insomniak wrote: »

If you can see one in sightings then you are within a 200m radius of that pokemon.
You need to figure out when you entered the circle, walk straight ahead until it disappears, thats the other side of the circle. Walk back halfway, now pick a direction perpendicular, the pokemon is either to the left of right of your original direction of travel.
Obviously this method doesnt work if your space is blocked by buildings and roads.

See point 1 above. Save the stardust until you are at trainer level 20 and above. Then you will more often be catching full strength pokemon.
Long term you will be looking to have pokemon in the 1500-2000CP range, this may seem like an impossibility now but once you get to level 16-18 you will start to see a power surge.
    insomniak wrote: »

No app but there are a few websites that allow you to access gamedata, you can get banned for using these unless you create a 2nd account. There are also some sites that allow users to post records of where they found pokemon so others can track known locations for regular spawns.
    insomniak wrote: »
Oh any one last thing, what pokemon should be my buddy?
Any one that you want. The buddy system allows you to generate 'candy' for the pokemon you choose. That candy is needed to evolve. If you can decide I would say choose Magikarp early on as you need A LOT of candy for its evolution. But there is no wrong choice, ie recently I have used the buddy system on about 3-4 pokemon just to get the last 5-6 candy I needed to evolve each of them, then it was back to Magikarp. Pikachu of course is a good choice as its a rare pokemon to find so getting candy is hard, and you will want to evolve into Raichu at some point.

-At around level 10 or 12 I think it is you get 2 Lucky Egg's on levelling up. You need to tactically use these. For 30 mins you get double XP. So save up lots of 'vermin' pokemon (weedle, caterpie, pidgey) these are the most common and cheap to evolve pokemon. 12 per evolve. (Rattata and Drowsee are more expensive at 25/50 per evolve but as they are very common they are also useful)
Each evolve gives you 500XP, thats 1000xp with a lucky egg being used. You can easily do 40-50 evolves in 30 mins.
Combine these vermin evolves with 10-20 evolves of new pokemon and you will shoot up levels.
EG. I did a mass evolve earlier this evening, had been stockpiling pokemon for a few days, did 38 evolves, 6 of which were new to the pokedex, 18 were vermin! I could have waited and done more but I wanted to get those 6 new additions done today. And I have lots of space as Im heading off tomorrow and expect to catch some interesting pokemon.....

-As mentioned above hatching eggs is another way to get pokemon. Each egg type hatches one of a different group of pokemon (at random) You start with a single infinite use incubator (orange), use this on any egg you want but aim to prioritise it on 2KM eggs. Sometimes as you level up you will gain a new 3 use (blue) incubator. DO NOT waste these on 2km eggs, only use the orange incubator on 2km eggs. This is purely from an efficiency point of view, you can whack out 4-5 2km eggs in the time its take a blue incubator to be used for a single 10km egg. Blue incubators cost actual money!
Pokemon hatched from eggs have a greater chance of being statically better than wild pokemon, hence the desire to hatch more eggs. Also hatching a pokemon gives you a handful of candy for that pokemon, which can be useful for evolving it. Google "pokemon go egg hatching chart" to see what can emerge from what eggs.

If you plan to invest any real money on this game a piece of advice would be to buy coins and use those coins to buy lucky eggs or incubators. These items are finite in use but will speed up you leveling process if used correctly.

    Yes, massively.
    Let's say you have 3 10k eggs and 15 2k eggs.
If you put your 2 ks into the infinity Inc. (Orange) And your 10k into 3 use Inc. (Blue). You would use 1 Inc.

If you put the 10k's into the infinity and the 2 ks into the 3 use you would burn through 5 blue inc's.

Same number of hatches but the second approach wastes loads of Inc. And at 150 coins each. They are not easy to come by.

    Make sense?

Ive never seen so much as a shadow of a Chansey.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 36,034 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

Rattata and Eevie only take 25 candy to evolve so are the next best after Pidgee, weedle, caterpillar for quick evolution xp.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,195 ✭✭✭Corruptedmorals

I got a Chansey about two weeks ago while on the bus, had just turned the game on and was about to go by a weedle and pidgey spawn. Saw the shadow and scoffed but popped up straight away. No shadow of one seen before or since.

Saw a Charmander shadow yesterday, hope that wasnt a once off

Yes absolutely. Thanks so much for that, that never occurred to me, so I probably have been burning through the blue ones. Time for a change of tactic!

I've never actually caught a doduo (hatched one and ignored a few) but I seem to meet dodrio nearly every day. Are there any other examples of the evolution being more common than the base?

I'm thinking of creating a band of freaks to go battling gyms. Mime, Bellsprout, exeggcute.. just to see what their fight moves look like. They won't last two seconds but as the gyms are all level 10 it's about the only bit of fun I can think of with gyms. Anyone else got any ideas?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,417 ✭✭✭Diemos

The evolved thing, never happened to me, I only ever seem to catch Hypno's and Tentacruel.
Hearing all the stories of people catching Gyarados and Blastoise etc. I just never have that kinda luck, or I'm looking in the wrong places.

As for gyms, just destroy the Level 10 ones. If I'm picking Mrs Diemos up from work and she's running late, I'll battle to pass the time. Or any time I'm passing one, I'll battle, I may only knock it by 500* but every little bit counts :p

*When you beat the first guy but have moved out of range of the gym you get an error but you get 500 prestige removed for the 1st win

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 36,034 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

I just don't understand the prestige thing at all. What benefit is it to me to raise or lower the prestige of a gym?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,676 ✭✭✭elefant

When the prestige drops to zero the gym is vacated.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 36,034 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

Is that not the same as beating all ten mons in the gym? That's not really something you can do on your own.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,676 ✭✭✭elefant

Is that not the same as beating all ten mons in the gym? That's not really something you can do on your own.

Even beating all 10 wouldn't necessarily vacate the gym. It might only reduce the prestige enough to bump one of the pokemon out, so only 9 would remain.

You could just beat the worst gym holder repeatedly though, and slowly edge down the prestige that way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,417 ✭✭✭Diemos

Prestige controls the number of defenders that a gym can have. It's broken down like this:

    Gym Level Minimum Prestige required
    1 0
    2 2000
    3 4000
    4 8000
    5 12000
    6 16000
    7 20000
    8 30000
    9 40000
    10 50000

    When attacking a gym:
For each defender you defeat you knock 500 points from the gym and 1500 for defeating the entire gym.
For every level you reduce the gym you kick the lowest CP defender out, making it easier to defeat the second time around.
There are many techniques, you can go brute force (throw your 6 highest CP in and hope for the best), or choose by type. Certain pokemon are weak to others, in my experince, with the exception of Snorelax, they all have serious weaknesses. (Snorelax does have a weakness to fighting types but all my fighting types are circa 900cp, I haven't had a chance to try my Machamp yet)

    When training a gym:
This one is a little more intricate, to level up a gym you need to beat the defenders using only 1 pokemon. You could brute force this, and beat the defender with a higher CP attacker but you only add 100cp for that approach, it would be very slow and cumbersome.
If however you beat the defender with a lower CP you get much higher prestige. eg. a 1500 Flareon defeated by an 1100 Vaoporeon will give you circa 650 points.
You really need to understand the weakness of the defenders and how to dodge special attacks.
