Did anyone think the bit where Sean came on to say what he'd be talking about on his show was more than a little frosty?

I thought so too but you can't blame Sean..after he outlined what was coming up on the show George said 'well I think that's just fantastic!' like the patronising old goat that he is! Can't believe Sean has lost half an hour to this cr*p

    Don't blame Sean at all.

Did well not to say "Blow it out your ass, George."

That would've been brilliant! :D I bet Sean was tempted too

Just heard Hook say that he was getting lambasted all over Twitter for his 'Here come the girls segment.' I can find 3 mentions of it in a mildly negative term. another gross exaggeration by Hook. I am never sure if he is trolling or he has a genuine victim mentality. He was saying similar stuff with Ronan Mullen yesterday. Stuff like you cant say your a catholic or have any sort of belief. George wants to have his views and not be challenged,if you challenge him its pc gone mad or some lobby group.

This show is truly terrible and not even in a fun way like Loiveline.

Grumpy old middle-class radio. Tailored to Daily Mail readers seemingly.

Have to admit, I'm laughing at this segment with the women. Mainly because I've been watching it on the Newstalk TV, and caught Eimear O'Shea look out the door and roll her eyes after an exchange with Hook. :D

    George the caped crusader.

I'm not sure this is going to work.
I enjoyed The Right Hook. I like the grumpy old devil.

But now, it's like he has too much free reign to pick too many inane topics that nobody, other than him, cares about.
It seems like a lap of honour for him. NT begged him to come back, so he can pretty much pick and choose what he wants to talk about.
Without having to stick to a Drivetime formula, he can waffle on about whatever he wants - and this does not make for good radio sometimes.

    I hope it improves.

I agree. It really is 2 hours of George broadcasting his own opinion, on topics he chooses.

I fail to see what it achieves. It doesn't educate or inform anyone. It might have entertained, were it not for the fact that we all knew all the things he blathers on about at least five years ago.

As far as I can see, it's mostly just designed to get people mildly outraged. Maybe in the hope people will tune in to hear what nonsense he'll say next. This is fatally flawed, though, because he just says the same things about the same topics every day.

I can't f*ckin believe they made Sean's show shorter for this.

I didn't even tune in today. The show's been a mess all week, I didn't think the addition of Michael Graham was going to improve things. Akrasia summed up perfectly the difference between Moncrieff and Hook. At the end of the day, someone in Newstalk decided that Hook's garbled nonsense took precedence over Moncrieff. I only hope that listeners vote with their ears and tune out. My curiosity has been sated and I'm done with it anyway.

Should appeal to 90% of posters to Liveline thread, then.

It's just a continuation of the Right Hook with Liveline thrown in, as I said I like George but Sean is miles and miles ahead as a broadcaster.

If Sean's time was cut for a show that served a purpose other than stroking G Hook's ego I wouldn't mind as much, I know ye are probably bored of me bleating on about it but its an utterly galling decision.

Seems like an unpopular decision on here but that's not always an indicator of the general feeling.

    Couldn't agree more with this.

    Galling is the word.

The same argument can be made re moving Chris Donoghue to the evening slot but John Kelleher and the Good Week Bad Week fillers were brought as well.

Give Hook his two hours but start it at 11.30 or delay Donoghue verbal diarrhoea until 4.30.

I was a big fan of the right hook but George really seems lost in this spot. The sensationalist start to the show each day is starting to drive me nuts. Today it was outrage because prisoners leaving jail are getting medical cards. Prisoners are classed as unemployed while in jail & are entitled & always have been entitled to medical cards.
I think George is better than that but they seem really desperate for some reason. I prefer the old midday slot. If it ain't broke why fix it?

It's ridiculous. Moncreif had a history expert talking about the U.S. election, and he had a philosopher talking about Morality, and Sean treated them with respect and asked intelligent probing questions and lighthearted observations.

Hook talked about religion by railing against 'liberals', talked about science by calling scientists 'Ageist'... He believes he is himself the only historian, scientist, and philosopher worth listening to.

Unfortunately the better content doesnt always translate into numbers.

Moncrief's show's numbers dipped as he moved away from current affairs into the more niche topics in the second half of the show.

Experienced that myself personally, would really enjoy the first half which would normally be current affairs with an interview with a politician or something. But the second half would get really niche, and I'd have turned off by then. I'd also be heading back into the office. His shows popular segment was a good catchment for the tail end of lunches.

Ronan Mullen, Michael Graham and George ranting on about immigrants; some of the usual right-wing knuckle-dragger boardsies must be still **** themselves silly, hence their uncharacteristic quietness....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,426 ✭✭✭nc6000

I couldn't listen to him on The Right Hook and certainly won't be listening to this. I can't believe they ditched Lunchtime and 30 minutes of Moncrief.

Firstly, I love George's show and I'm delighted that he's pushed Moncreiff off that 1.30pm slot as it saves me having to hear him with that stupid "It's being reported today" smart ar$e nonsense every day.

However, I think he goes a bit too far on this show, from what I've heard so far. It wont be too long before he offends some minority group or the BAI, or both. He should tone it down a bit.

With regard to his "why dont feminists criticize Islam" bit, I thought he went way too easy on the feminists who were in studio today. They gave him some mealy mouthed answer that progress had been made, and that they see the burkini as better than women not being allowed to swim at all.

Have to say it is refreshing to hear someone not give a dam what they say (within certain boundaries of course like not calling Travellers out and the N word etc. and so on).

But he's pushing the boundaries of PC. And he will do it more....give him time.

It's the right time for the fight back. Like Katie Hopkins on LBC London. Like her or hate her, she says it as it is.

Shows such as hers and GH will blossom. People are totally fed up with a bland, PC do not upset anyone agenda. What's the result? Bland predictable and boring radio.

Hook is a classic. And he knows it.

If ya don't like him, don't tune in. Simple

PeterTheNinth? Giving out about someone being a smartarse?

Isn't that like the Pope giving out that some other lad being too holy?

Pretty much a Right Hook/Liveline mashup.

Holy hell. They have people on the phone now being outraged...at something Paul Williams said on Newstalk Breakfast today, which George disagreed with.

So news, comment and opinion on something on their own station. Bloody hell.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,105 ✭✭✭Vorenus400

The swedish politician on now isnt taking the bait on georges leading arguments. He keeps saying stuff like "Is it not a fact that......." and then launches a completely wrong notion. or "You agree that......" and then launches onto something seperate. He only lets people talk if they agree with him or if they disagree they have to be completely out of touch like Paul Murphy.

I thought George was better than this, I thought he used to be more balanced. Using a Paul Williams piece from this morning on Irish was definitely scrapping the bottom of the barrel.

Always listened to the lunchtime show ever since Eamon Keane was presenting but I just can't listen to Hook and his panelists. 15 minutes today was enough to make sure I never go back to it again.

It's a real shame because Lunchtime was a great current affairs/news digest.
