Ha, I probably did alright. The S3 was the last truly new car I bought, it's all been demos or used since then. My brother saw the 2005 GTI I had last week in town, he's had a few MKVs since actually, currently a 2007 one which is very well specced.

I was tempted to go for a MK7 last year, dealer I have a good relationship with offered me 10% off a new one on PCP but it didn't happen. Really think they're the nicest GTI VW have done when you consider the whole package.

Just as matter of intrest how many RS focus have been sold this year compared to Golf R in Ireland.

i have never seen an RS in the flesh yet.

I've only seen one Irish reg RS driving around Mahon Point in Cork. In a gun metal grey colour.

Hard to argue with that but my favourite is still the Mk5. Loved mine. It had a certain rawness that's been diluted a lot in the mk7 due to the extra refinement, better cabin materials etc. Mental to think back on it though I paid 200 odd extra just to get an armrest ;) The specs / package is light years ahead now.

Same here Joe, while I do love the Mk7, my Mk5 still has a special place in my heart. I’ve kind of grown up with the car, and I've shared a pretty sizable part of my life with it.

I bought it in early 2006 based on a TG review from a young Clarkson (way back in the day when TG was great). Basically he said that this car would save the planet.

Most posters on here will probably has seen this several times, but it’s always worth another watch, and still puts a smile on my face.

In saying that, she is probably going to be going to the great dealership in the sky come Jan, as the rear bearing is gone for a second time, and there is a noticeable corrosion spot appearing on the passenger side wheel arch. She will be missed !!!

Great review. Remembered it as I watched it. Top gear was a programme worth watching back then.
Another golf gti in the future to replace it?

Anyone using android auto having problems lately? I was getting constant disconnects on a few phones the last month or so. The culprit is either Facebook messenger or the Facebook app itself. Deleted both and replaced them with metal pro (not as good but for limited use its fine) and it connects without issue every single time. I know some phones are having serious issues with recent Facebook updates too. I haven't had an issue in a long time with it so this might help someone if they use it.

That front wheel arch corrosion is very common issue in the MK5. It's due to VW putting foam or some crap like that inside the arch lining which soaks up all the water and road debris and slowly but surely rots away. VW were fixing some of these under warranty I believe.

Oh and that Clarkson review of the MK5 is one of my Top Gear favs too ;)

    Get an iPhone? :D

CarPlay seems to work fine. Sometimes Spotify refuses to get going though and takes a bit of persuasion (unplug it / plug back in, or start Spotify on the phone itself). There's also some nice CarPlay updates coming in iOS 10...

I sold my 6s+ because of apple maps. Although that wasn't working all that well either tbh, found android auto more reliable which is probably a first!

Well that and I was too mean to spring for nav:pac:

I found Android Auto only became reliable after I did a full factory flash of the ROM and then disabled a bunch of Samsung specific ****e they ship on the phone. I've read the Nexus phones are the most reliable for obvious reasons.

Noticed some of them impact it alright, most of its pointless tat anyway with Samsung. I'm using a One Plus 3 at the moment and it even works if you connect it before the head unit starts up which is a first for me. With the Facebook apps it just wanted to connect via mirrorlink all the time.

I might just go Golf, as its for the Mrs, and she does less miles that me each year. The problem with that is that VW don't do a scrappage, and I really don't want the hassle of selling privately. I might just go generic Hyundai or Nissan

All of the 150 clubsport s gti's available in the UK are sold ..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,550 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

In fairness 150 is a very small number for a market the size of the UK so it was always inevitable they would be sold as soon as they were available. I'd say they could have easily sold that number 10 or 20 times over but units sold probably wasn't the main driving force behind making it. I'd say the small limited number will make them very desirable second hand for many years to come.

I'm after seeing another 161 1.4 TSi in Cork. I wonder how many did they sell. 1.2 TSi and 1.6 TDi are very popular

    Wow.
I bet if you asked a salesman in a VW dealer they would not be as forthcoming.

259 per month is very good - bet its for the base model though

The "VW Social Team". Arse and elbow spring to mind :pac:

I'd say we're getting a mild facelift though alright - blink and you'd miss it type of facelift. Lights/grills/bumpers.

Went to the car configurator and the 162 I want is over 500 euro per month :)

    +6000 deposit, that's an extra 166 a month, so 425 a month.

Fook sake. Nearly 50% of the time I've shifted into reverse the past week the above has popped up on the screen instead of the rear-view camera. Seems to be a common problem with a quick google. Anyone managed to get it remedied here?

Never seen it. Have you tried hard re-booting the radio? Tends to fix little gremlins like that. My radio was randomly blank screen, the dealers applied a routine software update to it last month during a service and no blank screen since.

So it's possible your unit may need a software flash too.

I get it if I start in reverse sometimes. I think the camera has something to do with it. The sensors sound at both ends but the screen goes blank. It's like the using both when the MIB2 starts overwhelms it.

I've gotten that error a number of times. But the audio for the parking sensors work.

My car is going in for it's first service on Monday. So hopefully an update will resolve this issue.

Yeah defo related to the camera. I had it before when someone opened the boot while I was waiting in reverse. After they closed the boot I had no camera with that error. I think GF is right too about overwhelming the unit too if starting in reverse or putting it in reverse very quickly after start up.

I had this issue. There's a software update that cures the problem, was released late June/July time.
Had a lot of issues with the unit, screen going blank, ParkPilot not available, etc. but the update solved the issues.

Car went in for first service yesterday. I was informed that they would undertake two software updates and a check on the child locks on top of the oil service.

I was late picking up the car so didn't get a chance to ask what the software updates related to but I assume one is for the issues with park pilot/blank screen.

Would the dealer update Satnav? For example garmin and TomTom units offer free lifetime updates on units you can get from Halfords.

Yes the software updates are for the Nav unit - fixes the random blank screen and other little glitches. I used to get the blank screen regularly and haven't had it since the service was done.

I don't think they'll update the maps unless you specifically ask, but you know you can do that yourself? You download them and save them to the SD card, bobs your uncle. A link to the maps has been posted on here a few times or try googling it.

Thanks. I've downloaded the file from the site just haven't transferred over to the original SD card. Tried it on another SD card which didn't work.

The digital encryption used on the original SD card is matched to the specific head unit in the car afaik to prevent copying the software and using it on other head units.
