So I said to wife today that this is the first day in weeks that I have actually felt like my body is not up to a run.. of course my stubborn head is telling me different.

Lost a whole layer of skin on inside of my little toe on the 8M run yesterday and that's stingy. I got another poxy bite on inside of right calf and that's all swollen too, then to top it all off I've got a sore left hip too.. So I've dropped an ibuprofen and re-evaluate in a few hours.

I think I will use my "rest" day tomorrow before the 20M LSR on Sat morning.. I always get in a 5k on the Friday's before LSR.

On the plus.. I've got company for the LSR this Sat, a Dad of daughters friend is going to head out too as he says he needs a good early long run in for prep too. He has run the last circa 8 DCM's so I can pick his brains at the conversational pace.. :)

Sounds like a wise decision PD & hopefully you'll be back in the swing for your 20 miler, the company will help no doubt, hopefully his easy pace is the same as yours :pac:

Well it was said "where there is a will" 20 mile LSR done after work today.

Wet Wet Wet! Good to get it done could really feel it in the legs the last few miles......hopefully everyone gets on well at the weekend.

Hoping to get out for a 2 mile recovery run in the morning before going to Athlone.

LSR are tough at the best of times, after work really tough but in that rain I would bail. Fair play to you, you can enjoy the weekend with it done.

I must admit I did think of bailing out and heading straight back to work when I hit Malahide at about 15 miles....I was already well drenched at that point though. That's Saturday and today in the lashing rain!

I've passed on today's run.. First midweek pace run missed. Will try make it up tomorrow at slower pace but only if I can do it early and then get time to recover before LSR. Off now to watch another episode of Narcos..:o

Just had a brilliant session with the Laois senior hurling team physio. He said my VMO muscles are in excellent shape and the ACL test and McMurray's test on the knees were perfect.

There was an issue with my Glutes, he done a test where I had my leg raised and out to the side, he pushed against them and I had to push against him, I couldn't stop him from pushing the leg back in so he then had me lie on my side and worked on the glute muscles on either side and he then performed the test again, he couldn't push my legs in this time! I felt like I was using the same strength as the last time so I couldn't believe the difference, I thought this was amazing. He said my glutes weren't firing up so I have been using all my muscles in the front downwards for running and the glutes were an issue as they are the engine.

He showed me a technique for rolling them for 20 seconds on each side every morning to fire them up for the day and if running that evening, do again just before the run. He is happy with my knees and has given the all clear to go back running today. He thinks my new runners are possibly the cause of the soreness near my knee (He gave a much more detailed answer but I can't exactly remember so I am not even going to attempt to write it here). He told me to switch back to my old runners and to buy a second pair of that model and start breaking those in gently.

Apart from that, my legs are in good shape and I can continue Marathon training, absolutely beaming :D

    Delighted for you!

Well done! 20 milers are no joke, and I take it this is your longest ever run to date? A great bit of motivation for all of us heading out for our weekend runs!

Enjoy your weekend, scotindublin - and the very best of luck to all others on their weekend long runs.

Back into sick bay I go!

Not the worst news, I have an inflamed hip joint (bursa) so need to rest until Tuesday. Plenty of icing and anti inflammatories. I can cross train so will cycle and swim until then. "The more I rest the sooner it will heal"

It's painful enough so I was expecting to be told to take a month off so I'm relieved it's a simple enough fix. Back on Wednesday morning for a deep tissue massage and a lecture on the importance of stretching :D

I told her I have a number for the Grant Thornton 5k on Tuesday so she said once I stay at the back it's ok to do it as a test run once it's completely pain-free to walk on, so I'll decide on the day.

Thanks Nop....yeah that was the longest run to date....great to get it done.

Didn't manage to get the 2 miles done this morning but there will be plenty of walking on the golf course

I find that a bit of soldier golf and playing off the wrong fairways can ensure you get a good workout done.........honestly I could hit it straight but it just wouldn't be as good for my cross training

Hope you feel better soon kittyclaws! I have an inflamed knee (bursa). It is quite a sore pain, almost like you can feel a bruise there but you cant see one. Common causes seem to be incorrect shoes or overuse. I am resting up myself, quite frustrating but has to be done. I am hoping on Monday, I will be good to go, hopefully you will be yourself with plenty of rest and icing of the area.

Hi all, apologies haven't been on but been mad busy now contending with two schools, working full time and running :)

Will take me an age to catch up on all the posts but hope everyone is ok and good luck with our next mile stone...20 miler tomorrow, weather forecast is ok as no showers till the afternoon and in fairness its eased off now compared to an hour ago.

well done, Scotindublin on your 20miler, done & dusted ...hope golf went well & more importantly hopefully a few more of us can accomplish 20miles over the wkd :)

So my knee still isn't right, and I haven't ran since Tuesday. It hurts to walk, especially up or down stairs, and there's kind of a pinching pain behind the kneecap.

My next free day is Wednesday, so I will see the physio then, and rest until then. I'm very worried :(

Glad to hear the news is not as bad as you feared Kitty. I'm surprised to see your physio give the okay for a 5k race (even staying at the back), injury aside is it included in the training plan you're following? Really at this point in the game, minding injuries etc etc the best thing for one and all is to stick to the easy runs and long runs. As we're very fond of saying here over and over 'Keep the main thing the main thing'

Sorry to hear that aceygray, try not to worry too much. Take the rest days and let your body heal up until you can see the physio and take it from there then.

Are you foam rolling ? no harm to roll out the IT band before you see the physio - all my knee problems came from a tight IT band - since I started foam rolling - I do it at least twice a day now and I havent had problems

Take it easy G. Pretty sure you're doing the best thing by resting.

Hi all, really enjoyed reading this thread over last few days! I myself have been preparing for the marathon (my first) since early July following the plan on the dcm page to run between 3.15 and 4.00. I usually run laps of tymon park during the week 3x 13k(at the min)and long runs at the weekend! I'm going to head to pheonix park tomro to do my 20miler. I'm a little bit curious as to how people fuel themselves during such a long run and I would appreciate any advice! I tried using gels a few weeks ago but they upset my stomach! Keep up the good work! Mick!

    Hi Mick,
Did you use the ordinary gels or isogels? The isogels would be what most people here are using, they seem to go down fine for most. Have you tried Lucozade sport. I found that good before I started using the gels. You could try jelly babies or jelly tots.

Well she said go for a 4 or 5 mile run the night before I go back to see her, so I said I might as well do the GT5K, she said I could run it very easy but stop if I have any pain, I think I kind of tricked her into agreeing to it!
I'll see how it goes, I'm not risking the marathon for any race. I just want the free night out with work after this one :D

Hi there, cheers for your reply! I have a box of high 5 energy gels but I think I was taking too much of them during the long run! I'm gonna try take one of them tomro during this weeks long run! Gonna buy luc sport on your advice aswell! Cheers! Mick

On my 20 mile run last week I brought 2 gels with me and took one. I've a 16 mile run tomorrow and I will bring 1 with me and if I feel I need it I will take it, if not I won't bother taking it.

The Lucozade sport is a good alternative if the gels don't agree with you as they will have it at some of the water stations on race day.

Hey Milky88, welcome to the thread. A recurring theme in the pages above is to use the long runs to perfect your race-day routine, and I'd say getting your fueling strategy sorted is probably the most important of them all (other than your shoes :D).

Most novices will eventually settle on using gels of some sort, All or nothing already recommended isogels. You really want to find out if you can eventually stomach them before the day itself, if not, you need to find some sort of alternative. Let us know how you get on this weekend.

For long runs, you have a bit more flexibility, e.g. you could run in loops around a stashed bottle/gel (in Phoenix Park you can easily run a 10M loop from your car), but for the day itself, you need to either carry all your fuel you intend to take, rely on the water/gel/Lucozade stations, or have someone 'crewing' for you on the day, e.g. meet you at some point during the race. All of this needs a little planning and practice!

There's a few questions for all first-timers in the opening post - it will help us get to know you a little better...!

Ouch, acey... +1 to the previous advice of not worrying too much. Up to now, your training has been exemplary so a few days off won't overly harm your chances. Rest up as much as you can, hopefully the physio can sort you out and have you back in no time. Keep us posted.

Its funny you should mention Lucozade Sport, it has the opposite effect on me and the fizziness upsets my stomach. I can't stomach jelly babies etc on a run either, i find them sickly.

I have always found Kinetica Cola flavour gel to be the tastiest for me and easy to take.

My plan after a horrible long run last Sunday is to start hydrating tomorrow all day and have a good dinner and eat well generally to set myself up for Sunday.
Also plan on eating something wholesome a few hours before the run on Sunday.
A portable Porridge, a flapjack and an orange did not sustain me before the run last week for sure.

This article was posted on last year's thread. http://www.irishtimes.com/life-and-style/health-family/parenting/a-trial-run-for-the-dublin-marathon-1.1914433 .... Nothing we haven't discussed here already, but an excellent summary.

I particularly like "Don’t dread your long runs. Make the most of them... Make these long runs fun. Get a bus somewhere and run home, arrange to meet others, bring a few euro in your pocket so you can stop for a drink..."

Good luck with the long runs this weekend, folks. Look after yourselves and share your experiences!

What am I doing posting this so late? They're all in bed already, surely! :D
