Uh oh. I've an 8 mile run home from work tonight but I accidentally wore my long retired walking-to-work runners today. This is going to be... interesting.

Last year, there were several PBs set by our novice-group (and lots of confidence gains) but Chrislad and 1 or 2 others didn't have that experience. I guess it won't suit all.

Our preference and recommendation would be for y'all to try and race it - but it is your call. As I said, think about what you'd like to get out of it, post your plans here, and we can discuss it.

Ah, I wouldn't say I didn't get any confidence gains, as I did knock nearly 7 mins off my PB, but I just had to abort the 20 mile at around mile 16 I think, which meant I only had one 20 mile under my belt come the day.

As you said, it's an individual choice, and if you're running a fair number of years, you should be fine, but I had only been running about 14 months or so at that stage.

I kept meaning to share this.

For anyone that suffers with their runners wearing through at the toe or heel I recommend this THIS TAPE.
I'm currently alternating 2 pairs of Saucony Ride 9's. On the first pair the right toe wore through after about 150 miles. I ordered the tape and stuck a square (with rounded corners) inside both shoes. 100 miles later and you'd swear there was never a hole.
On the 2nd pair I noticed the right heel (inside) starting to wear through. I've applied the tape to the inside heels of both pairs now and it's holding firm.

The tape is so strong, but thin, it's amazing. I'd say it will prolong the life of my runners by a good bit anyway.

Thanks for this Kin9pin - I'm having the exact same issue with my Saucony Guides after just 220miles. To me they are not fit for purpose - after spending €140 on a pair of shoes, you expect them to last more than 2months. Did you contact the shop where you got them from?

I'm going to order some tape - it may get me through Lisbon as I don't know if I have enough time to break in a new pair of shoes now :(

That's what I thought, it's a lot of money to spend! I assumed the toe issue was due to my running style as it also happened on a pair of Brooks and it's always the right toe. For the heel, I sent the 2nd pair of runners back to Running Warehouse and they sent me a brand new pair to replace. I put the tape on the heel as soon as I got the replacement pair as, like you, it's too late to start thinking about different runners for me.

The training plans (HHN1 and boards) allow for racing the HM.

Just looking, I think the HHN1 has a 14m lsr the week after the HM and the HHN2 (which I am doing) has only a 12m whereas the Boards Plan does have the 20 miler ok. So I guess the concern of racing the HM and it possibly affecting the 20M lsr the following weekend is probably only a concern for those doing the boards (or other customized plans).

Anyway I think nop you've talked me into racing the HM. Though my head is screaming how can I run it at HM race pace when none of the runs in months are faster than PMP. I guess I just need to trust and have faith. :)

Went out late for my 8 miles and it was still very humid. It's a bit scary to see the leaves starting to fall off the trees, the marathon seemed so far away when I booked it in May - where did all the time go?!!

As I'm doing the Charleville half next weekend I moved the weeks around so I had the 11 mile run with 9 @ MP tonight. It was tough enough, getting soaked in the first few miles didn't help. Happy with it considering I did 20 miles on Sunday. All very slow easy runs from now until the half.

I did a double take yesterday when somebody asked me when the marathon was - "oh, next month" I replied  :pac:

I woke up today with really bad hip pain - its in the hip bone on my right side. I've emailed physio but I probably won't get an appointment until next week.
Has anyone had this and is there any stretches/sacrifices to the gods I could be doing in the mean time to help it?
I'm starting to lag behind in my training plan so I really need the 18 miles this weekend to get back on track :(

I haven't been following for the past few days cos I'm on my holidays, but just a quick update.

I got my recovery run in on Sunday, went fine. My "easy" run on tue felt very tough. It was a hilly enough route, and i had to take a few walk breaks. I just wasn't feeling it. Then afterwards, my legs started to feel v stiff, and my left knee hurt.

My knee was very sore yesterday, so i skipped my run and iced it as much as possible. It feels a bit better today, but still not 100%, so i won't run today either.

It hurts to press on it, it kind of feels like there should be a big bruise on it, but there's not. I was out fishing in rough conditions on Monday, so it's possible i got a knock, but i don't remember.

Anyway, hopefully it will improve by Saturday for the LSR. If it hasn't i will keep resting it and maybe see the physio next week.

Ace, most times I find that knee pains relate back to an issue with the muscles that connect to it.Especially since you say your legs were stiff after run. Some stretching of calves/hams and quads may help along with some foam rolling...this certainly has helped me but your physio will know best

Earlier in the year I had some hip problems. I found doing lot of stretching after workouts and long runs the best solution. I can be stretching up to 30 minutes some days. I also do some gentle excercise to build strength. I'm sure your physio will recommend a few stretches and excercise to suit you. I'd be reluctant to recommend any to you but what you do take them easy until you get your physio to look at you.

Actually you're probably right CFR, I deleted my recommendations. Kittyclaws ask your physio if they will recommend something until they can see you and hopefully you get it sorted quickly enough.

She had a cancellation for tomorrow morning so I don't have to wait too long. Hopefully it's just a quick fix, I ran a new route last night and it was a very uneven surface so I suspect that was the cause.
I'll go for a swim tonight instead of my easy 4 miles.

The LSR a week after racing the HM shouldn't be a problem as long as you take the LSR extra easy. By all means shave a mile or two off if you are feeling after effects by then. Obviously all easy for other runs during the week too.

HMP is doable because it's a HM. Once you toe the line and get in race mode you may surprise yourself with what you're capable of. Know your HM expectations/limitations and give it a good shot.

So I said to wife today that this is the first day in weeks that I have actually felt like my body is not up to a run.. of course my stubborn head is telling me different.

Lost a whole layer of skin on inside of my little toe on the 8M run yesterday and that's stingy. I got another poxy bite on inside of right calf and that's all swollen too, then to top it all off I've got a sore left hip too.. So I've dropped an ibuprofen and re-evaluate in a few hours.

I think I will use my "rest" day tomorrow before the 20M LSR on Sat morning.. I always get in a 5k on the Friday's before LSR.

On the plus.. I've got company for the LSR this Sat, a Dad of daughters friend is going to head out too as he says he needs a good early long run in for prep too. He has run the last circa 8 DCM's so I can pick his brains at the conversational pace.. :)

Wives talk sense . Let me guess . She told you to take it easy sure you only run for the fun of it and your taking it way too seriously since you started this marathon malarkey or is that just mine.

The irritating part is she's right in my case.

Ah No she is starting to take it serious now.. even tells her Mammy friends down at the school!

She knows well that I will need to be crawling lifeless on my knees before I miss my runs.. :D

    Hi all,
well after having an impromto chat with my physio - the joys of living in a small town ! I was telling him about the spin class and he could see nothing wrong with me doing it and especially as I need to build up my quads - so went last night and it was great - really enjoyed it !

So this morning did my LSR - and slow it was - really struggled between 16 and 19km - stopped a few times in total to do some stretches and toilet breaks but got it done - cant say I enjoyed it all but my aim today was to run a bit further than I have ever run before

So in total I did 28.66kms in 3.16.42 which is 6.52/km for me - delighted its done

Anyone with hip or knee pain I am doing strength exercises everyday to build up - only takes 15 minutes and this includes foam rolling - I use a tension band for my exercises - would be very hard for me to describe exactly what I am doing but I got all my exercises from the physio when I went about my knees
