Sorry things didn't go as expected T. The elevated HR might have something to do with that and the conditions, well, they were bordering on apocalyptic, so don't be hard on yourself. Look forward to reading your report. Feet up now!

I woke at 7 took my heartrate as I do every morning, It was 71 its usually mid to late 50's, tested my blood sugar and they were grand. I got up and ate my usual brakfast of porridge and a bananna bofore heading to the park. Arrived bofre 9 so just sat in the car for a while getting my stuff ready. About 9.15 i walked to the start to put my bag in and warm up.

I got under a tree at the bag drop , I met balck oil here but I wasnt sure it was him despite having ran a lsr with him the week before, I'm the worlds worst at remembering people, His race report confirmed it was him I was talking to, Apologies Black Oil thats so embarressing especially as I moved away from you to stand somewhere else. I was abolutely drenched through and shivering with the cold, the wind was cutting through me, I moved to try get better shelter , wind cover from a tree. I was wearing a lightweigh rain jacket which was useless so I took it off and put on a plastic bag i'd fashioned the evening before. I think it helped cut the wind but I was already really cold and wet, I should have wore the bag from the car. I put my bag in and headed to the startline.

I ran from the start back down chesterfield and back to warm up and then just waited for the start. I was still shivering but other than that I felt ok , took off the bag and we were off.

My plan was to run at my pmp of 10.18 but I wanted to have a little leeway so I started off a little quicker it was downhill and I was feeling ok first mile was 9.47

    Mile 2
It was here I started to realise things were not right, I was tired all ready, The black Oil came alonside me and we chatted for a few seconds, I recognised him this time as he was in the running gear. I rember telling him I was having a tough time only 2 miles in . Split was 9.26

    Mile 3 to 5

Struggeling on Mile 3 but still on target , Mile 4 I take a gel to see if i can get some life into the legs but it just sickens me , I'm really struggeling now and slowing all the time but still running. splits 10:17 , 10:34, 10:49

Mile 6 I,m done I stop to walk for a bit and then set off again, at the water station I stop again to take in water, I had my own water belt on so I didnt need to but I did I was think just get on Chesterfield and then its only a 5k . split 11:55

    Mile 7 to 9

More run walking, despite feeling sick after first gel I try another one as I need energy but it just sickens me more, I felt I wanted to puke. Im looking at people go by me thinking theres no way that person should be doing that. I must have looked in a bit of a state as a few people ask me if im ok, I was ok , just shattered. I see other runners with their goodie bags and am envious but im determined to finish and get mine. splits 12:29 ,12:40 , 13.29.

    Mile 10

Its a bit of a haze but I think I ran all of this and actually passed a few people split 11:40

I went to get my bag to get out of the wet gear and they couldnt find my bag, I was over half an hour waiting in my run gear I went in myself then and found it. I went to the meeting poing but not surprisngly there was noone there, It wasnt a day for hanging around, I then saw TFGR and had a brief chat with her but I wasnt feeling good at that stage. I walked back to the car and drove home I wasnt feeling good. I stopped at traffic lights and fell asleep teh driver behind me beeped to wake me up. Not good I know.

Really wrecked after the race I couldnt stomach any food , went to bed at 5 o clock and didnt wake until 10 this morning, Unknown for me. Still have a really sick stomach today and I'm not eating , shivery and just really off still, RHR was 77 this morning so still in the clouds.

Looking back on my log wednesdays run and fridays 2 mile easy I commented on feeling off on them. I'm thinking I must have a bug, I'm doing no running until my rhr comes back to normal and I'll take it from there. it was a tough day made tougher by the conditions but I don't want to have any knee jerk reaction to a bad day which is why i didnt write this yeaterday. Hopefully I will be back to normal in a few days.

I've very few positives to take from yesterday apart from finishing when really struggeling a long way from home. Negatives The gels sickened me and I though I had that sorted.

Well done for getting through it and not giving up! A lot of people would have. The mental strength it took to get through that will stand to you big time in the future. Hope you're feeling better soon.

Wow, that's a very tough day you had. Definitely sounds like you have a bug or something, so I wouldn't read anything into the performance. If anything, it was a very impressive one given the circumstances!

    Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks TG , I feel myself that it wasnt just a bad day and there is something else behind it. I'll take it easy for a few days and go from there.

Sorry to hear you had bad day, don't think you have a problem with gels
more likely upset stomach, put it down to bad race due to illness and get
back on track when you feel better. Look at your training you have had better
training runs, all down to not feeling well, onwards and upwards and back to
training as soon as ready well done for sticking it out on bad day:)

Thanks kg. I think its the 14 mile training run in the park last week that's keeping me level headed about yesterday.

Still unwell today in bed since 7 sick stomach and shivers so I'll take a few days rest hopefully it'll settle down or I'll go to the quacks not something I do willingly.

Chin up TM, your training has been going great, just a bad day at the office which is going to happen if not feeling the best.

Mind yourself T, really sorry to hear you had such a bad day on Saturday but it does look like its a bug or cold or something else. The benefits of know your RHR and training by HR...

Do you think the gels made you sick because you were already sick? I wouldn't discount that.

    Get well soon!

I'm fine Tony thanks, still under the weather but in good spirit. I've been coasting along with the scheduled runs so perhaps a tough run was needed to drive home the message that task in hand is tough.

Just want to get well and get back at it now.

Good look with you upcoming race, I was looking at your stats for your weekend run and you're going really well.

Thanks AM, I wasn't right from the middle of last week as I was finding the easy runs tough. I've had a sick stomach since Saturday so I don't think the gels caused the sickness.

The Hr was in the mid 60's this morning so moving in the right direction but I'm still feeling off but I'm hoping I will be ok in a day or two. My daughter had similar effect from a bug the week before last and was grand after a few days so I'm hoping I will be the same.

I'm going to revisit my diet too, I've changed it a lot since I started marathon training . Its mostly Fish chicken rice and pasta now so I may not be eating enough red meat.

I'm just getting plenty of rest the last few days and heading to the flix this evening to make sure I don't go running. :D I missed the recovery run yesterday , I feel a bit guilty about that but I know its for the best.

Wow, that's a very tough day. I think it's obvious that your body was in some distress - it could be worth getting bloods done etc. if whatever it is doesn't clear up pretty quickly (probably a good idea to get them done from time to time anyway).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,006 ✭✭✭✭The Muppet

Toe back in the water today with 4 .2 mile easy @130 Bpm 11:48 pace.

RHR was back near normal this morning and I was feeling a little better in myself . I took the run nice and handy , had stomach cramps again from two miles in so obviously not 100% still. I was a minute a mile slower today for similar effort on the same route last week.. A bonus of training by heart rate is how simple it is to compare 2 runs on the same route when something is not right its pretty obvious.

Like Lena Martel advises Im going to take it one day at a time for a while until I'm back to normal, definitely feeling better after the run than I was before it.

Not good A .I'll do up a report tomorrow.

How did you get on yourself

Just read your report, you're definitely sick! Compared to how comfortable you were in fingal at a faster pace... Getting soaked and cold at the beginning probably sapped your energy too. Hope you feel better soon!

Thanks A, I know I was i'll after todays run , I don't think it's anything too serious but it's bad timing  . it could be tough to keep things on track for the next week or so . 17 miles on saturday is looking particularly unattainable or wise for that matter at the moment, hopefully i'll pick up a little before then I wouldn't want to miss a long run..

See how your week goes T but if you're unwell, doing 17 miles could do more harm than good. You'll be doing yourself a bigger favour in the long run (!) by resting now. It's only one week, it won't matter in the overall scheme of things as you've been so consistent up to now.

Sorry to hear you had such a crappy race but at least you can put that performance down to been unwell. Ease back a bit on the training until you are 100% again, even if you took it easy this week it shouldn't impact your overall fitness.

Took your advice yesterday and skipped the run , it was such a beautiful evening I was tempted . I had a great nights sleep and feeling I'm on the mend this morning, not 100% but getting better.

I have Pilates this evening , I'll see how I feel as the day progresses regarding running I might just leave it until Saturday and try the lsr on a bus route.:(

    What do you think?

Yup, you've more to loose by running when Iill than not running at this point, don't make any decisions on the LR yet either. I'd even skip Pilates and just rest...

Miss Pilates  , I'll go easy at it, promise. No running though today or tomorrow and see how I am Saturday, cheers for the advice I appreciate it, it can be difficult to be sensible when running to a plan and things go wrong.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,080 ✭✭✭✭Maximus Alexander

You've tons of training behind you, missing a couple of easy midweek runs isn't going to hurt you, but running when you're sick might. Save yourself for Saturday and give yourself the best chance of being mended for the LSR would be my view.

    17.2 miles @129 bpm 11:44 pace

Yesterday afternoon I didn't think I'd get this done today but I was feeling ok last night so I decided to have a go at it.

Warm day. I kept a good eye on the heartrate , the pace is a little lower than I'd like but all things considered I'm happy to have completed the run . Tired but not wiped out .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,006 ✭✭✭✭The Muppet

2 miles recovery on sore legs after yesterdays run. Not as sore finishing as starting out which I believe is the object of the exercise.

    2.04 miles @123 bpm 11.54 pace.

That's week 9 Of Marathon training behind me. Not a good week for me as documented above missed a few runs and my pilates too, decided to listen to the wise words here and rest , Thanks FD.

On the plus I got my lsr done , I probably shouldn't have done it but I went out with the intention of just doing what I could and was prepared to call it a day if I had to, happily I got through it, I was tired at the end but i'd imagine most of us novices were after 17 miles.

Going to take the week ahead one day at a time again as I feel I'm on the mend but still not 100%.

I have a lot of easy running done and I think its really important to get The LSr's done if at all possible so that's the main objective for the week ahead slightly complicated because I'm away next weekend and I wont be able to do my lsr on Saturday morning, I'll just see how things work out.

    4.1 miles @ 135 bpm 10:15 pace

Too fast for easy but I've been shuffling along for nearly two weeks now so when I got going tonight and felt I could run I did.

I'm still not 100% TBH but I am getting there I think, I'll see how i am feeling tomorrow before deciding if I will do the 6 @ mp session tomorrow as I plan to do my lsr on Friday and I don't want to do too much too soon.

Still Feeling ok today so I gave the pmp session a go. It was mentally tough as I have doubts about my condition but I set out to do what I could at pmp and the take it easy from there on to complete the planned 8 miles with 6 @pmp. There were a few junctions on the route and to be honest I was glad of them tonight . I managed to complete the session as planned with 6 miles @pmp or slightly faster. Feeling good now if a little sore in the legs. I cant run tomorrow and I hope to do the 19 mile lsr Friday afternoon.

    8 miles @130 bpm 10 18 pace

    Mile Splits
    1 @ 11.18 130 bpm
    2 @ 10:02 128 BPM
    3 @ 10:00 127 bpm
    4 @ 10:04 129 bpm
    5 @ 10:09 130 bpm
    6 @ 10:08 136 bpm
    7 @ 9.55 133 bpm
    8 @ 11.23 129 bpm

Delighted with the run, I assume the junctions account for some of the low HR but its good to see it moving in the right direction. Legs were sore during the run quads mostly but aerobically i felt fine.

19.2 mile LSR in the bag. Arrived in Waterford 3pm booked in and straigh out again for this at 3.45

It was quite warm stating out and the first few miles were down hill into waterford city . Took them nice and handy and there were a lot of junctions to cross.

Tge plan was to run up tge quays and out to the greenway and to run on that to 9.5 mlies and then run back. Unfortuatley I ran out of footpath at 4 miles and the road looked too dangerous to run on so I reverted to plan b which was to run to tramore.

The same junction had to be navigated so it was stop star for the first six miles which had me on the tramore road.
I calculated that i needed to run 5.5 out and back and then the two miles up to the hotel wold give me my 19 miles.

It was constant running out to tramore and back in the hard shoulder/cycle lane.

Pace was reasonably consistant around 11 minutes miles except the last 2 were up a seep incline and I dropped it . Could easily have continued on from the 19 which I'm delighted about.

Straigh to dinner when I got back and then an Epson salt bath/soak

Delighted with the run and how I was feeling on it.

Hope to get the recovery done tomorrow but I may not.

    19.2 @ 125 bpm in 3 hrs 35 mins
