Its not important but it is good to get a background for the character but like you said not essential.

Agree with Penn though, if your going to watch this, why not watch JJ anyway

Well I guess no more than those who watch The Flash but not Arrow, or vice versa; if Jessica Jones didn't interest you, for whatever reason, it wouldn't be a hindrance to watching Luke Cage.

It's more a question of time rather than anything else - too many series to catch up on. :o

The it is not essential but if you go with the defenders for the next series, it might be good to see the past relationship so it does not seem confusing or you don't miss why attitudes are what they are.

JJ is definitely worth a watch on its own merits though

Why would anyone watch the shows out of their intended order...?!

Edit: I say this assuming you're intending on watching JJ at some point and just wondering about prioritising LC. I may be way off.

One of the best things about the Marvel shows on Netflix, is each one tries its hardest to beat the corridor fight scene from daredevil season 1 :D

Nice ending with Clifford Smith there in the trailer!

This show is excellent... Very smooth..

Have watched the first two episodes and really enjoying it. It's a bit slow mind but it's working so far but if it keeps up this pace for the whole season I might get a bit bored.

I'm enjoying the pacing of the show to be honest.

Five episodes in and it's really good I think.

Just watched the first episode. Feels a lot more adult than Daredevil or Jessica Jones, but maybe I'm misremembering how age appropriate those actually were. Very enjoyable first episode anyway - sets the tone nicely for the series.

The music in this is just superb!

    One episode in.

Feels like they've gone to gory violence very fast but I'm think that is maybe because they feel they don't need to introduce Luke Cage as his intro has been done in Jessica Jones. That left a hole that got filled by the baddies!

I think it's got potential. Will see where it goes.

Five episodes in and loving it tho its much slower going than Daredevil.

The amount of actors from "The Wire" in this is pretty mad.

Four episodes in. Fantastic stuff. A lot of Easter egg stuff I didn't think we'd see. Great so far!

Second episode has gotten me hooked to the story.

I haven't noticed folks from the wire yet. I mistakenly thought one of the guys in the first episode was Marlo but just from the back of his head. Then it showsed his face and I was like ... nah. I'll keep an eye out though. It'll just give the series even more thumbs up.

It's unreal how they present these. I hate the Marvel movies and shows with a passion but in the 3 series netflix have on the go now it's amazing how the same and how different they are in terms of shades of dark. Hats off to them.

The netflix ones come across as "we ain't checking for brains on the way in so no need to leave it at the door Sir!" and I mean that in a positive way.

The best thing about Netflix is that they don't necessarily need to worry about censorship or appealing to a mass market, thus becoming somewhat neutered, like Marvel's movie and cable outings and instead can have free reign to do as they please.

Something I'm finding with both this and Jessica Jones is that both are brilliant on the backs of their supporting players, with the lead title characters bringing up the rear.

The Easter Eggs throughout the series are brilliant

One of my favourite Easter eggs so far is the use throughout the show of the Daredevil theme tune. It's sprinkled about the place, sometimes as little as one bar and often very subtle but it's there. Beautifully done.

    Also,
    Patsy Walker on the radio
at the start of episode 5 was a nice touch!

    Episode 3 done

At first I was all like.. right I'm gonna have to get onto boards and give off about the cop reveal. I was all like.. OF COURSE HE'S WORKING FOR THE BADDIES... How did I not see it. I was thinking and thinking about it and eventually coming to the conclusion of... oh alright... well played Marvel. Ya totally got one over on me. But now he knows who you are...

and then they were all like... awe look at Luke sorting things out and giving money to the restaurant lady

    AND THEN

    BAM!

    ROCKET LAUNCHER

AND I WAS LIKE ... "OH ****!" and before I could think BOOM! restaurant gone! and yer man Remy from house of cards there with that big grin on his face.

This all after the Mr Robot kinda-motorbike-drive-by(ish) shooting outside the New York restaurant scene in recent weeks. This just .. excuse the pun.. blew that outta the water.

Well anyway... onwards with the show :)

Start of episode 2 and straight away you can tell this is directed by the same guy as A Scandal in Belgravia (Sherlock Series 2 episode 1) :)

    This too shall pass.

    Episode 4 was good.
When I see backstory and superpowers then it feels new and this was done decent so I liked it.

Interesting the revealing of the identity before the news camera. I don't know anything about the defenders tv show that's supposed to be coming out but maybe this is part of the build up to it.

Just finished the whole thing. Really great stuff start to finish. I was really surprised we got to see a full on
    Serpent Society costume
in the last 2 episodes; that was really great! A few more tie-ins to Daredevil as the show went on, that was nice! This will defo get a second season anyway!

Binged watched it all and im sad now i will have to wait till the defenders to see Luke again.

It was brilliant. Marvel and Netflix are a winning combination.

Anyone else like the scoring and the soundtrack? Its brilliant.
