Maybe worth remembering that Annalise Murphy came fourth in London, and she got her medal this time.

Thomas is 24, he could have an amazing next four years.

    Roll on Tokyo.
+ Great prospect for the 2 world championships in the meantime

I'd say the Turk was at the end of his rope, no-one slows up in the last 5 metres of an Olympic sprint final (.... well apart from that one guys)

Hey maybe he's the Turkish Bolt! Lol

What is his 400 flat PB?

It's a real pity we didn't get that qualifying time in the Euros for the 4x400. With Barr and English in the squad it would be interesting to see how we would progress. An NR would have been probably best to hope for not sure we'd have enough for a final position.

Am watching the final of the 470s in sailing. The crew literally balance on their toes against the side of the boat and bounce off it to keep the boat flat!

He looked very pally with President Aliyev at the European Games last year, the two of them looked like they were getting on like a house on fire :)

There is zero chance of a medal in golf. 9 of the top 10 in the world are there including 4 Koreans. Do not get your hopes up.

But is Maguire not up there as one of the top players?

She's not really in fairness, possibly in time but not yet. She is No.1 amateur in the world (a great achievement in itself) but in terms of the Pro game, she's nowhere near a top TOP player. Top 10 finish would be a fine performance here if she could manage it.

I thought No. 1 in Women's golf was a decent level but I am not up on Women's rankings otherwise. I hear she is currently doing alright on today's golfing!

Number one amateur doesn't count for much against the best professionals in the world.

She is a decent level, no question, but she's No.1 only as an amateur, while she's 300 and something on the pro rankings which probably isn't a fair reflection of her ability as she hasn't played in enough Pro events to get lower yet.

But yes, a wonderful 65 today, so on her day she is well capable of shooting low, but it's about putting 4 good rounds together at this level, of course. At a guess, she'd need minimum 2 67s (-12 or -13) to finish to be in with a medal shout. Definitely not outside the realm of possibility, but a big ask all the same.

I'd say if she had turned pro earlier, she could easily be pushing top 50 in the world, maybe lower. She seems to have the ability. But the top pros are scarily good right now. I watched that Thai golfer win the British Open recently, she's not in Rio I don't think, without carrying a driver in her bag. She struck a 2-iron off most tees 250-260 yards down the fairway. With that kind of length, I can see her becoming dominant.

-6 for the day and missed a few putts, one from 3 and a half feet so could have been even better. Womens' scoring has been low today so she'll probably need at least one more day like that to have a chance at a medal.

He's up to his eyeballs too. 2 years ago he couldn't break 49.5, which was his PB from 2009 and now all of a sudden he's doing this.

He beat Barr in his World Championship heat last year, and in an interview afterwards Barr didn't even know the chaps name. That should tell you everything.

Didn't Barr take well over a second off his pb over the three races this Olympics?

He did indeed but his improvement is following an unusual trajectory. He finished only 5th in his semi final at the European Championships a few weeks ago. If he was up to something dodgy, you would have expected him to have shown strong form before now.

Ah I wasn't implying he was up to anything dodgy at all and don't see how one could imply the Cuban is either

Because up till before the World Championships last year Copello's PB was 49.56, which he set in 2009.

6 years later, in his first competition as a Turkish athlete, he cuts that to a 48.46. He won the heat in the Worlds that Barr was competing in, and Barr didn't even know his name in an interview afterwards. Anyone with any form of reputation is going to be known to him.

Barr, meanwhile, has been cutting his PB every year as with natural progression for a young athlete. And he was nowhere near fit in the Europeans. He had just come back from a hip injury.

That's how one can imply Copello's progression is nowhere near natural.
