They finally got off the boat last November after 7 years on the thing.

Game Atelier sent me a demo of the new Monsterboy game and allowed me to share a video of it so here it is
I put this in the gaming vids forum already but though it wouldn't be out of place here :)

Really enjoyed it so far. There's 2 more playable characters too ( I'll show then in another vid) and while I don't have any gain from the sucess or failure of the game I did contribute to the music in a way (and got paid for it) so the game should also feature a little banjo playing otter as npc and quest character ;)

Just nabbed something I've wanted for ages from everyone's favourite wallet stuffing removal guy, Steve Bailey :)
It's the Dural disc from the CG series on the Saturn. Apparently you had to post in all 10 spine cards from the previous 10 discs to get it.

Speaking of Steve Bailey, I was flicking though a very old, 2002, special edition of Edge magazine called Retro and there was a page therein devoted to the man, as a member of the British diaspora making a living buying games in Japan and selling them to punters back home.
I didn't realise he had been doing this for so long and had an article there.
Pretty neat to find it tbh.

Unless anyone wants to buy a boxed Zelda on the nes for $130, I doubt it :pac:

Spotted that in a games store today.

Did you see it in Le RAGE?

The 'sad' note at the end about missing a Super Mario Bros prototype for $200 with apparently differences to the final version totally outweights the Joust prototype by a large amount

Might be of interest to a few: Edge have a new special issue out called Art of the Pixel or something along those lines.

Don't have much interest myself, but had a gander and it seems like a pretty nice art book/magazine full of pixel art both modern and retro :)

Something I've noticed while messing about with the PS3 reference unit - the PS3 Sixaxis feels really archaic.

I've never played a PS3 before this, ever. Was totally 360 for that generation. Therefore to use a Playstation dual shock type pad with something post PS2 for the first time feels incredibly weird and bizarre. Constantly feels like I'm using a PS2  - hard to describe.

I found the sixaxis really light. Presumably because if had no motors for vibration.

I found it really weird too for that reason.

At least it has a decent D-Pad...

I've always preferred the Playstation shoulder buttons to the Xbox ones too, but more comfortable to reach and a lot better for games like Dark Souls.

+1 for that, play Dark Souls on 360 and DS2 on PS3, found the ps3 controller way easier. I really like the PS4 controller aswell

The lack of proper triggers on the DS3 was a drag, impairing the experience in racing games, the 360 pad was far better in that regard.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,360 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Always hated the Playstation controller and I'm only used to it now because of Stockholm syndrome, I've been using it that long. It seemed like a complete load of arse when it launched on PS1 in comparison to the likes of the Saturn controller and even the snes one before it.

The Playstation d-pad is kind of crap. It seems to get a free pass these days because the 360 controller d-pad was in another league of awful but it was never that good. 4 face buttons instead of 6 on the Saturn seemed like a bad idea at the time and it makes playing Capcom and SNK fighters unnecessarily tough. 6 buttons was important back then, not so much anymore.

Then the dual shock came along in response to the N64 and Saturn analogue controllers. I always felt they just put the analogue sticks in the only place they would fit rather than actual ergonomics. There's a lot of revisionist history going on about how forward thinking Sony were including 2 sticks for 3rd person and 1st person games but the truth of the matter is they lucked into it. They stuck another stick on there because 2 is better than 1. Early games from Sony like Ape Escape, while pretty great, really didn't use the second analogue stick for anything other than a gimmick. Even the likes of Medal of Honor hid the dual analogue set up deep within the options settings and it wasn't until the likes of Quake 2, Alien Resurrection and then later Halo when the value of two sticks became apparent. I always found dual analogue games weird on PS platforms, Uncharted and it's ilk always felt iffy to me.

When I saw they were keeping the same Dual shock design for the PS3 I was quite annoyed, especially following a 360 controller that d-pad aside set the standard for controllers for 3D games.

The Dualshock 4 thankfully is a thing of beauty, such a massive improvement on that flawed design.

That's what's throwing me off, the weight is making it feel like a ps1 pad.

But Kaz Hirai said vibration is a 'last gen feature'.

I wouldn't say the DS4's dpad was the best in the PS range...

Keep me updated, I love to hear people's experience of it. It's one of my favourite games, kept me company at a not so great time. I'd actually love to replay it, maybe when I get a new 3DS.

Will do! Loving it so far.

Not too far in just yet. I've gotten the map, Mr Baseball Cap and the better bat, and saved the game in the hotel in Onett, so I believe I have to fight the Sharks when I go back to it later.

And Frank, I think there's a burger in one of the bins near the drug store if I remember right.

    Edit : almost right

Never thought to check the bins, and I spent my childhood playing Pokemon rummaging through every bin in the game...

Earthbound is some game. I only played through it once a few years back, but still find myself humming the music from it every now & again. I preferred it to Mother 3 tbh

I check every bin because of Pokemon, didn't one gym have switches in bins? Was it Surge?

The music is amazing, I love the vocal songs so I sing to the instrumental in the game.
As much as I cried over Mother 3, Earthbound just has such a special place in my heart it can't be topped.
and Mother 3 had the cute Salsa dance! I want to make a plush set of Salsa and Samba, they're so cute. I always think if M3 when I see sunflowers

It was indeed. Three switches in the bins to open the door. I can't remember if you had to press them in a specific order. It's been years since I've played Pokemon red.
