I wouldn't bet my double mortgaged house on it, but I'm sure she started off with saying best Irish track performance ever, then stressed Olympics, then qualified it to say sprints. I don't think there was a "one of" qualifcation in there but could be wrong. No biggie in fairness.

It's certainly one of the better ones but if Barr was to medal, it would move him up among the Irish legends.

As well as that, he was third overall in the standings. I hope he can run well on Thursday and surprise us all with a medal. As it was said, it's good that he gets a rest day.

If he could break his Irish record again, anything is possible.

There's a happy looking guy if ever I saw one :D

Yes but Sonia was on another planet - but just cheated out of it.

There is something wrong with Irish employers if they can't organise their staff to see every Irish final in this. It is the ultimate example of team work and how to actually achieve goals.

In fact - Irish employee still seem to have an almost slave like colonial attitude to situations like this. You couldn't take time out for a race like

To be fair to Derval, when you consider that Barr was injured for most of the year (a year that should have been his to really cement himself as one of the best in the world) and couldn't break 50 seconds at the Europeans just over a month ago.

When you factor all of the above in, I would say for him to run like that on the biggest stage of them all would put it up there as one of the best. This time last year an Olympic Final was expected, but only a month ago we were all praying he'd be able to get out of the heat.

So true. I've not got the daytime stamina anymore for these nocturnal Olympic games but I'd have loved to have watched it.
Barr's face at the end sums it up. Here's hoping he's got something in reserve in the tank when it comes to the showdown in Thursday.

I was half awake when I heard news on Radio. I got the " he into final bit" so my reaction was " oh great he must have got fastest loser spot, or came third" ( thought was 2 semis).

Wow that's fantastic. Great to hear. If Conlon had won yesterday it would have been a savage day.

Actually it was super day. We got silver medal, we got 8th in diving, we had Sprinter win his semi, and a boxer who won his fight fair and square, only he forgot bring brown envelopes

Every possible marginal gain is tried by British Cycling.

Other teams are catching on with the idea of marginal gains though as the US team had redesigned some of the bikes so that the chain was on the left rather than the right the idea being that it helps with the balance seeing as you are riding round to the left all the time.

Relax, there's no colonial attitude, no-one is out to deny you, don't worry you're still as entitled as you always were...... ;)

Fact is, most Irish people don't follow athletics, if they did the tracks in Belfield, the Mardyke, Santry, etc would be full of spectators every time there was a meet.....but They aren't, there is the proverbial man and his dog and a few friends and family supporting athletics in Ireland.

Also, most Irish offices will probably show the final on the TV in the reception area or meeting rooms or whatever, and others will probably be able to view it online, and that will cater for the 1or 2 genuine athletics fans in their staff. Sorry if this demonstrates a colonial attitude to the workforce.... Whatever That is.

I'd love to stay up for Thomas Barr later. He's surely got quite a good chance of making the final. Here's hoping anyway!

I awoke this morning with a mix of regret and excitement :D

Yes they've pretty much turned track cycling into Formula 1 at this stage. Engineering more important than natural ability.

Nah, the British have an excellent program in place that is doing a great job at identifying talent at a young age and puts them into some excellent training programs. They do have great attention to detail, but have a great eye for talent too.

Kudos to the Vogel who won her sprint despite the saddle falling off.

    Shoddy workmanship Ted!

They were messing with the camera before the final and then I thought it was a bit wobbly when they showed the seat cam shot during the race, the angle that the wheel was in the picture kept on moving. Was expecting something to fall of the bike on the way round from looking at that video.

Paddy Power have Barr at 25/1 to win Gold and 7/2 seventh favourite to win a medal. Not too much confidence there.
To me (and I am no expert) Barr looked full of running at the end wile the others looked shattered. Surely he has more in the tank?

I took a quick look at last 2 Olympic winning times , in the 47s mark for the gold and silver positions , low 48s for the Bronze . I believe bronze is possible. Clean and controlled run like last night but needs a bit more in the finishing straight.

Meanwhile, in another transparent bout in the ring yesterday, an American boxer cries foul:

    https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2016/aug/16/gary-antuanne-russell-boxing-fixing-allegations-rio-olympics

And another article about allegations of fixing, including comments on Conlons fight and Russell the American:

    https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2016/aug/16/michael-conlan-accuses-boxings-ruling-body-after-being-cheated-in-defeat

The second article includes a brilliant quote from Russell
Gary Antuanne Russell, a 64kg boxer for the USA, told the Guardian that a chaotic qualifying tournament in Baku was compromised.
“Whoopins are universal, you don’t have to speak English to explain how somebody won or lost a fight. Let’s just say some countries watched other countries fight and were amazed at the decision-making.”
