It's not Barr, or Murphy, or the O Donavans fault that this happened.

I'm extremely proud of our performance at these Olympics where it matters.

Hoping Hickey gets his just dessert if guilty but in no way should this tarnish the people who have done us proud.

I'm sure it won't do. People like the O'Donovans and Annalise are among the finest of our citizens, real role models for everyone.

I think the embassy consular services may be under orders to take a round about route getting to the police station.

I took a quick look at last 2 Olympic winning times , in the 47s mark for the gold and silver positions , low 48s for the Bronze . I believe bronze is possible. Clean and controlled run like last night but needs a bit more in the finishing straight.

What? The finishing straight is easily the strongest area of his. The race last night was clear evidence of that...

Yes it is and he needs to find a bit more. I never said anything bad about his race last night. I was was only comparing his time to the last 2 Olympic winning times . And to get the bronze he needs more. And I hope he gets it.

Bbc - 'confidence oozing from Mo Farrah', mhhh and what else. Very dubious associates for my liking.

An Irish guy living in Moscow said a minute or two ago on Liveline that the Russian media are rather sceptical about GB's very high placing on the medals table and are talking about 'the pot calling the kettle black' etc.

It's hard know if the gb sucess is legacy from London, lack of Russian competitors or something more sinister.

If it gets to court then I assume Hickey will be hoping to get one of the dodgy boxing judges.

Surely not when he is Irish he'd get the death sentence

I would expect nothing less from the russian media, they love to portray themselves as the victims.
There will probably be the usual run of RT articles and tv shows with stern faced people gravely telling the audience that it is a dark day for sport, how it is all suspicious and an obvious anti-russia plot.

Most of Russias medals come in Athletics (which has only just started really in terms of medals being handed out), Gymnastics and Wrestling which wouldn't be big medal counting events for GB:
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/2012/medals/countries/russian-federation

Russia were in the Gymnastics though and GB's recent improvements in that event has continued on from them having got 1 medal in Bejing and then building on that.

If Pat gets convicted and banged up in Brazil, can we expect him to have a total makeover once he's released and for RTE to send someone out to do a big puff piece on him like that last one?

    From BBC News.
The AIBA - who run world amateur boxing - have admitted that there have been problems with the officiating and judging at some bouts at the Games.

"Less than a handful of the decisions were not at the level expected and consequently it has been decided that the concerned referees and judges will no longer officiate at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

"In accordance with AIBA Rules the result of all the bouts will stand."

Just on their blog page at the moment, they don't yet have an article linked.

Yeah, just caught a bit of the RTE coverage there and Joanne Cantwell read out the statement. She said it didnt specify which bouts, or which judges they were referring to. Also all results stand.

How can a result stand if the judge is called into question? That surely makes those bouts invalid!!

There was a rule change for this Olympics that fights could not be appealed no matter what as far as I know

If we're talking about corruption, it may not be that it's endemic across AIBA, more to do with individual judges and referees being bought off.

Update: Beaten to the punch by MicksJaguar!

Apologies for linking this again, in case anyone hasnt seen this article from August 1st:

    https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2016/aug/01/rio-2016-olympics-boxing-corruption-allegations

    some brief highlights:
Before the London 2012 Games, it was alleged by the BBC that Azerbaijan, which loaned $10m to AIBA to underwrite a professional boxing series that has not been repaid, had effectively bought medals. A thorough AIBA investigation by senior officials rejected the allegations.

Another high-ranking source, who said he believed the manipulation was directed from the heart of the AIBA administration, claimed he witnessed scores being manipulated at major championships and says he is desperately concerned about what is likely to happen at the Rio Olympics.

In a memo sent by ousted director general Ho Kim in June 2015 to AIBA executive committee members, seen by the Guardian, he underlines its “precarious financial situation” and the “rapidly expanding budget” of Wu’s presidential office in Taipei.

He also alleges Wu’s failed 2013 campaign to become the IOC president was covered out of AIBA funds, a claim AIBA denies on behalf of itself and Wu.

Of the Azerbaijan loan, Kim called on the executive committee to “properly understand what are Azerbaijan’s expectations as to the repayment of the loan or what other benefits are expected if the loan cannot be repaid”.

Question: once professional boxers are permitted in the Olympics, won't the corrupt amateur organisations become irrelevant?

    I hope so...

They are, if they box under AIBA Boxing

So no AIBA remain in charge
