Which they almost never do. Certainly not on purpose and if they do you can quickly request for it to be re-enabled.

I've had IPv4 on my line for years now with no issues.

Unfortunately you are not correct - there are frequent reports now of people being reverted even after specifically requesting an IPv4 address.

Christ man get off your soapbox. There are a handful of complaints on the Virgin forum, and they are fixed quickly. I've almost stopped going into that forum now because I can't be bothered reading more of your constant complaining.

I've been with UPC / Virgin for years, changed package a few times, new modems and have never been on an IPv6 address. Yes they had issues with Netflix earlier this year, but its been resolved, and the service is rock solid.

Implementing a half cocked solution like DS-lite to save a small amount of money is a huge slap in the face to all Virgin customers.

There are issues with Tunneling which go against the requirements of the RFC.
There are issues with devices that require manual port forwarding. You can see in the draft history of the RFC that comcast gratefully removed any considerations around that.
They do not make any effort to inform customers of this policy. This includes their support staff who troubleshoot the same issues everyday and blame the customer.
The cost savings from using carrier grade NAT do not appear to be passed onto the consumer in any way.

The only issue I have with IPV6 currently is that their own Phone Application in the last version does not work when using the Hub 3.0 and IPV6 on an iPhone or iPad.

Otherwise I seam to have no problems with DS-Lite, my Nest's work, my NAS can be accessed from outside, my VPN works and my Direct Access works (well it's an IPV6 tunnel anyhow). In addition looking at the host addresses that I connect to, the majority are now IPV6.

But I don't need anything like port forwarding or DMZ so I'm not a typical user.

They however could do a better job of explaining DS-Lite to their customer and "support" staff so that they do better understand what needs to be done in case of issues. The conversation I had with their "support" about the phone app was priceless but one does not use VM for the customer service experience.

You only need to look at one factor to say conclusively:
    zyymzwUm.jpg

Many users have seen 360Mb functional links being bottlenecked down to ~100Mb by the 6to4 NAT process. If they'd deployed it properly(bought enough kit) that wouldnt be an issue.

Its stupid penny pinching, but its not like most of us have too many options yet.

Really puzzled by this. In my Dads setting up this new tv device, and its working fine on my phone hotspot but not his wifi. Thinking there might be something up with the wifi code or something.

Anyway go to log into the admin panel, and seemingly the password is on a sticker on the box. Typing in the number on the sticker, its being rejected. He has definitly never changed it, not has anyone else, yet the supplied password not working.

On the bottom of the HUB there is a sticker with the WiFi Name, the Wifi Password and a little smaller on the right bottom the Settings Password.

Use the settings password to log onto the router interface.

If that does not work, do a reset via the button on the back and it will revert back to it's original settings.

What's the red clip at bottom of one side off modem please? I have an idea but can't find any information about it.

You can pull that piece of plastic out and it shows you your WiFi name and Password.

Upgraded today and I am fairly impressed with the Hub so far.

Strangely i'm still on 240 and not 360.... Anyone else have that issue when upgrading?

Can take 24-48 hours. Give them a ring Friday if you're still on 240.

Got the modem when upgrading from 120mb to 240mb. Definitely seems to give a much stronger signal throughout the house.

Wow, looking on YouTube this doesn't seem to get great reviews at all. I just received mine this evening so haven't have much time with it yet.

I was on 240MB with the Ubee EVW3226 router and never had any issues.

They offered to upgrade me at no extra cost to the 360MB package and said I'd need the new hub.

So what's the general consensus.... have I made a mistake?

It depends on what you are doing with your connection.

I'm perfectly happy with the Hub and IPV6, as I use modern clients and compatible VPN software with DNS settings on each client.

In fact my AppleTV is working better than before and on my laptops most connections are now IPV6 with great speed.

If you want to change DNS settings on the hub, that does not work. There are also limited configurations possible due to IPV6 and limitations on the interface.

If you have a requirement for IPV4 instead of IPV6 (DS-Lite) because for example your VPN does not work with IPV6 or you want other features that require IPV4 than you will have to contact Virgin to get changed to IPV4 and regularly check that you still are on it because it happens that they frequently revert you back to IPV6.

As to the signal strength, once I modified the channels to something less used around me I have an excellent signal. However I have a max of 3 clients in each band so I'm not heavy user. I do not notice drops or low quality like some report (beside the Windows Mobile Insider build issue).

For what I do (surfing, downloading large files, e-mail, Netflix, VPN, VoIP, Skype for Business, NOWTV, YouTube, WD NAS Cloud, Sonos Music Streaming, Nest Units) this works fine.

So it will come down to what you do with your internet and if you are IPV4 dependent.

I have the new router set to bridge mode and I use the Archer C9 router for WiFi and routing. Up until recently I was running (Ookla over a 5 Ghz wifi) speed tests of 290 Mbps ish down and 37 ish up.

Last week I had to, due to incompatibility with the apple TP App update, update the Archer to a newer firmware. After flashing I had to reset the router from scratch.

The old setup was as follows .... Hub was set to 192.168.0.1 and my Archer was bridged to 192.168.1.1...... all internals were then on the 192.168.1.xxx range. When I rebooted and did the new setup my my Hub is now on a totally different IP address and, I assume obviously, the Archer took the 192.168.0.1 address.

Since I have done this my speed had dropped from the old 290 ish download to 65.18 to a maximum of 73.93 Mbps download speed, the upload has remained the same as before.

For what I require, Apple TV, Sonos Internet Radio ect the 70 Mbps odd download is fast enough, but I am paying for 340!

Could this be anything to do with me being reverted back to IPV6? Or do I have the Hub set up incorrectly?

Also Ho do I tell if I am IPV6 or IPV4?

Also Ho do I tell if I am IPV6 or IPV4?

[While bridged] If your own router receives a 192. address then you're on DSLite(v6) otherwise you'll receive a public address on your routers WAN side. 92., 5. etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,299 ✭✭✭Yggr of Asgard

If you have the "new" Hub (i.e. the white box) than you will most likely be on IPV6 unless you have requested not to be on it (however sometimes they still put you on it).

    http://test-ipv6.com/

To get back to IPV4 you need to call Virgin or go over to the forum and pm them there, they can help you.

As ED E says, check what the WAN address is on your Archer Router.

However if you with the same hardware are now getting lower speeds, it might be your Archer that is causing an issue here with it's newest firmware rather than the Virgin Network.

Hope this isn't the wrong place to ask but do people have any specific recommendation(s) for a standalone wifi router to use with the VM Hub 3 in modem mode? Ideally one that supports OpenWRT/DD-WRT etc.? I see a few mentioned earlier in the thread (some OpenWRT/DD-WRT compatible, others not) but just wondered if there was some sort of "highly recommended" shortlist? Thanks a lot.

Has anyone been successful with the newest shipments of Hub 3.0, and using modem mode on newer software? I have seen screenshots showing the 'Modem' menu, but it seems to be completely removed. I only just got the hub 3.0.

Would be great if anyone could post the URL for accessing the modem page (example could be something like: 192.168.0.1/modempage. I'm hoping that they just hid the menu option ;) This might not be visible in the URL bar, but Chrome Dev tools will show it in a network trace...

Thanks in advance if anyone know's it!

I'm not a developer, but it seems like the option is definitely being deliberately hidden:

    common_api.js

    var GlobalSt = {"VMFuncEn" : false, "waitTimeScreen" : false , "HideModemMode" : true, "title": "Connect Box" ,"goto":false, "HideRemoteAccess":false};

    Darn...

I recently got the VM Hub 3.0 and I'm having a strange problem when I use a program called acestream which is just a video streaming application .
the acestream application itself works perfectly but when its running no one else can connect to the internet and as soon as I close acestream everything works fine again. I'm not very technical but I wonder would it have anything to do with the port that acestream uses which is 8621. I used acestream on my previous modem without any problems, any suggestions would really help

I got the Hub 3 about a week ago and the Modem Mode option is there in the web configuration interface. I haven't tried using it yet though. I can't seem to get a URL for the option because of the way that the UI is javascript driven... Here's my device info. I'm using Chrome Version 53.0.2785.116 m to access it.

Thanks! Looks like you are on the same HW and SW, so the option should be available to me.. Do you see the same global value to hide the modem as the one I previously posted? I changed manually in the debugger at runtime, but still no luck.

Just to confirm, the option for 'Modem Mode' should be on the main homepage just after signing in, as one of the main menu items in the navigation pane?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,168 ✭✭✭TM

Yes - I see the Modem Mode options on the home screen.

    vmhub.png

And yes - I see the same Javascript as you do in common_api.js.

Edit: this may get you to it? I think the the first radiobutton is to enable modem mode and the second is to enable router mode (default)?

I used to have the option of Modem Mode until today, they seam to have pushed a new software CH7465LG-NCIP-4.50.18.20-3-NOSH onto my device this morning (the modem rebooted around 0400) and since than it's gone.

I tried the url you gave but that does only get me back to index.html.

Thanks again, but this is causing a HTTP 302 redirect to the main menu screen every time I try and load it. I am going to reset the router also, starting fresh may clear out something weird.
