On RTE now - Brazil v Russia - Women's volleyball. With the commentators stating Brazil expected to medal, why is half the venue empty??

The upper tiers seem more full. I'd say ticket pricing has a lot to do with it all, along with long queues to get into the venues.

You could be right, the main 2 empty ones today were court side - not unlike the Corporate empty lower tiers in Athens (which us Irish infiltrated - TV footage available!!)

Shane Ryan qualified for the 100m Backstroke semi finals in 14th place, nice one.

Great work by Shane Ryan who has made it into the last 16 of the men's 100m backstroke.
Unlucky for Fiona Doyle who finished 8th in her heat and 19th overall.

I dunno about the queues being anything to do with it. Every indoor event I've watched so far had a poor attendance, you'd expect a Brazilian beach volley ball game against Russia to be packed, particularly given the size of the venue. It'll be interesting to see how the track and field events fare.

I always had a feeling Brazilians wouldn't be particularly interested in the Olympics. Football is head and shoulders over everything there. MMA and Formula 1 would be the other popular sports and they're not even present at the Games of course.

Mark Kyle didn't improve upon Ireland's team score in eventing but consolidated our position with a decent score of 50.40 on Jemilla. Puts us in a great position going into the cross-country phase which is expected to be a real test this year.

There's a huge gap between rich and poor in Brazil. Most people can't afford the tickets. Simple as that really.

Indeed, the Games seem to have been staged by the rich in Brazil for the rich of Brazil. I can well understand why there have been protests on the streets.

I know. Hence the issue not being queues. The IOC knew this and made a balls of the pricing structure.

Who won women's road race? How did Lizzy do?

Its down to the last 5km now. Think Armistead may be in the mix for a medal but the gold medallist is clear, but only flicking over and back so not 100 per cent sure.

It's over, RTE's coverage is delayed. It's a dramatic finish though, so would recommend watching it!

Ha. I was thinking it strange it was still on when I flicked on to it. Yeah, a dramatic finish kinda like the men's only this time the leader agonisingly missed out.

Not the easiest place for wealthy westerners to get to either. Long haul flights for all countries, limited accommodation and dodgy reputation. Lower ticket sales overall.

Great diving on BBC 1. Those Chinese women are something else! Fantastic to watch.

Is the Irish female gymnast out? Missed it earlier.

She is : she was doing quite well until the very end of her last discipline when she landed on her head when dismounting from the beam (she seems fine though).

Yep, 10th out of the 10 who finished, needed top 8 to qualify. Was never expected to reach the final, was a huge achievement just to be there

That looked horrible, I'm sure everyone was fearing the worst. Apparently she's okay though and just badly shaken.

Adam Peaty's 100-1 on to win the 100 breaststroke. Has there ever been a heavier favourite in any Olympic race ever?

He just looks like any world class swimmer. How is he so clearly better? That's a genuine question.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,444 ✭✭✭✭Skid X

Annemiek Van Vleuten reported to have "cerebral trauma & three spinal fractures" after her fall.

    That does not sound good.
