No plans to include Saorview Connect within the Saorsat platform.
Not sure about hardware on the approved Saorview Connect combo if it will receive Saorsat.

I will have to look elsewhere for a suitable combo.

I'll eat my Humax Freesat box if the new Saorview combo has a guide combining the saorview and the free to air Sat stations complete with a 7 day epg.

Looks like Saorview will no longer be using Teracom for STB and TV compliance testing. The 2rn Saorview webpage has a strikethrough on both the Teracom AB weblink and the NorDig Unified ver 2.5.1 equipment requirements document link but links are still live.

Saorview will now likely use Eurofins TestWizard suite by default, following their selection by Freesat for deployments of its Metaphor TV platform for third-party operators worldwide.
9th June 2016 - Eurofins Digital Testing, a global leader in end-to-end quality assurance (QA) and testing services (formerly Testronic Labs Belgium), today announced it has been selected by Freesat, the joint venture between ITV and the BBC, to automate monitoring of service availability across Freesat’s subscription-free satellite TV service in the UK. In addition, Freesat will use Eurofins’ TestWizard suite and services for deployments of its Metaphor TV platform for third-party operators worldwide.
    ...
Under the agreement, Freesat will use Eurofins’ cloud-based TestWizard system to reduce development, testing and deployment cycles, and support a more continuous delivery environment for its TV services. TestWizard reduces the time spent on repetitive, manual tests by providing automated tests cases for increased coverage and consistency to provide service validation, insights into the end-user experience, and performance monitoring for quality assuranc

Oh I'd say we are well advanced at this stage in the testing. Wont be long now for utter disappointment.

For the new range of receivers at least but this will also apply to future products incl. TVs as manufacturers update their product ranges.

I wonder does the Nordig spec remain with Metaphor bolted on or does Metaphor replace Nordig?

For instance, wow, ability to set recordings remotely. Nothing wrong with that, but the pay TV platforms have all moved onto the ability to actually stream live and recorded TV from their boxes to tablets and smartphones. I see no sign of that from Saorview Connect.

No. But my 2008 Humax Freesat box (with unoffical firmware) does these.
Meanwhile here in Ireland RTE's player has really fallen behind, using old silverlight technology and very limited availability on various devices. While TV3, UTV Ireland and TG4's players are non existent.

RTE player through the RTE website is painful to the point of being unusable, it works way better using a certain unofficial plugin on a certain open source video player, I am being cagey here because it is legal to watch this material but probably not approved to watch it in this way, but it's a sad indictment of the poor 'official' product RTE offers (not the underlying streaming technology which is obviously the same for both.)

Meanwhile the very limited RTE player test functionality on the Walker PVR has been removed entirely and replaced with some rubbish web services, do RTE even consider this as an opportunity lost?

Not surprising given how ropey the approved Walker PVR was, and is.

or the number of "approved" tvs that don't work properly since 2RN fixed their settings.

Looking at the website yesterday the strikethroughs have been removed and a new document has been added, Rules of Operation for NorDig Complaint Platforms (RoO_24__SV_Public).

The document, NorDig Rules of Operation (Version: 2.4 - 2016/07/21), hasn't been publically available previously and has been around since Jan 2010. Version 2s of the document appear to be applicable to the Saorview network only and are a network specific version of the publically available NorDig-Rules_of_Operation_ver_1.0 document. Other network versions can be found with a google search.

    http://www.2rn.ie/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/RoO_24__SV_Public.pdf

    The document is described as
The NorDig Rules of Operation contain a set of minimum transmission regulations, which are deemed necessary along with other applicable standards in order to support the basic functionality of the NorDig compliant receiver operating in primary and secondary network environment. In general it is assumed that transmissions targeted for the NorDig digital receiver are fully compliant with the NorDig Unified specifications.

These Rules of Operation therefore only contain specifications regarding the configuration of transmission parameters and the interpretation of broadcast signalling in the NorDig receiver. The Rules of Operation may also act as a guideline document for digital receiver manufacturers as to how the IRD is to interpret NorDig compliant transmissions.

There are references to Hbbtv, satellite transmission, CI+CAM and blank section on Conditional Access.

How likely is it that the Connect box will have apps like Rte, tv3 and tg4 players?

Also could the box be capable of streaming Eir sports channels like BT sports or will Eir prefer to push people to their Evision box.

I do see that Eir are allowing people to view the BT channels through an old sky box.

It'll have the RTÉ player at least, see post #542 on the previous page

The specification 2RN published yesterday allows for CI+CAM to be used in conjunction with HbbTV services, section 10.5 Communication between CAM and application, so it's possible.

    E-Mail today from Saorview:-

MAKE YOUR SAORVIEW EXPERIENCE EVEN BETTER!

As you have registered for a Saorview ID we wanted you to be the first to know that the new Saorview app is available to download for free from both Google Play and the App Store.

Mobile, tablet, Apple or Android, the Saorview app is for all the brilliant people who don't have to pay for their TV. The free Saorview app features a 7 day programme guide, a new recommendations service and has links to on demand players. Search for specific programmes on TV and radio and set reminders to make sure you don't miss out.

But this is just the start! We have packed the Saorview app with even more features that will be switched on when the new Saorview Connect box is available in the coming months.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,828 ✭✭✭Tigerandahalf

I had a look at the app.

There seems to be no TV3 player just rte and tg4.

You can set reminders to record programmes using the app which is very handy and there is also a section called My Recordings. Hopefully it will make it easier to find recordings as that is one thing my combi box is very poor at.

The app looks well and has a tv guide for programmes. It doesn't give a date on when the connect boxes will come out.

Wonder if they'll publish it to any non-Google app stores like Aptoide, F-Droid etc? Not everyone with an android compatible device can have or wants to have Google Play services and all the cruft and privacy hazards that come with it.

AFAIK developers do not generally publish directly to stores like Aptoide. The APKs are copies of what is published to the Play Store albeit perhaps without the up to date versions. No doubt Saorview will find its way in there. Freetime is in Aptoide.

Aptoide seems generally trustworthy so long as you stick with the main "Apps" repo.. many other stores are not. I have found apps that I have made in third party distribution stores that have definitely been tampered with. I would not install those apps. If you think that third party stores are more trustworthy than Google, then you are mistaken.

In general, developers do not publish to non-Google app stores other than Amazon.

I highly doubt it, I'm already genuinely surprised that it was released on IOS and Android at the same time.

Why has Eir Sport been removed from Saorview? I understand there's issues with Virgin but surely that's a separate agreement.

Was really looking forward to the Dundalk game tonight

Eir Sport was never on Saorview. Are you thinking of Virgin analogue instead?

Perhaps I am! I just moved into a new place and had about 17 free channels through the 'pipe' connection. I just assumed this was Saorview

Sounds like Virgin analogue alright. There are only 9 TV channels on Saorview (two of which cannot be on air at the same time).

I think it's because most people assume expect Saorview to include UK channels.
