Danny Boyle to make Trainspotting sequel with original cast in middle age
Two decades after choosing heroin over life, the stars
behind seminal British film Trainspotting are set to return for a sequel, as
the characters face a mid-life crisis.
Rumours of a sequel have circulated since Irvine Walsh, the writer of the original Trainspotting novel, wrote a follow up Porno in 2002.
After several false starts, director Danny Boyle said a script is in progress, and the plan is to release the film in 2016, on the 20 anniversary of the original.
“This has been a long time coming,” the Slumdog Millionaire director told Canadian film website The Playlist. “There’s always been this long term plan for Trainspotting 2.”
He believes that the entire cast could be re-assembled including the original’s star Ewan McGregor. “I don’t think there will be any barriers to Ewan or any of the cast coming back,” the director said.
He added: “The reason for doing it again is that people cherish the original, people remember it or have caught up with it if they never saw it because they were younger.”

Could be good but one of the best things about the original was the sheer youthful energy and freshness of the whole thing which won't be repeated here.

Is the book any good? I read Trainpotting years ago but never bothered with the follow up.

Would rate it as possibly being a better (easier) read but not a better book, if that makes sense.

Trainspotting when first read pretty much hits you full on, and can be quite a visceral experience at times, whereas Porno feels far more structured and is more reader friendly in terms of language than it's predecessor.

If you have read some of Welsh's other books, specifically The Acid House and Glue, then a few characters and places in Porno should catch your eye.

is Porno not set 4 or 5 years after Trainspotting? Been a while since i read it. and this set 20 years later?
I cant see this being an adaption of Porno, more just a sequel to the film

Slightly OT but Danny Boyle is doing an AMA on Reddit if anyone's interested.

‘Trainspotting’ Sequel Lands At TriStar With Original Crew
Sony’s TriStar Pictures has acquired worldwide rights to Danny Boyle’s long-discussed sequel to Trainspotting. Boyle, screenwriter John Hodge and all the principal cast of the 1996 Miramax film based on Irvine Welsh’s novel — Ewan McGregor, Jonny Lee Miller, Ewen Bremner and Robert Carlyle — will be back. Shooting will begin in late spring 2016 with an eye toward a 2017 release.

At the Telluride Film Festival in September, Boyle told Deadline that Hodge’s script for what they’re calling Trainspotting 2 is terrific, that the actors all wanted to do it, and reiterated it will be his next film depending on the actors’ U.S. TV schedules (Miller stars on CBS’ Elementary and Carlyle is a regular on ABC’s One Upon A Time).

Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman worked with Boyle on eight films while at Fox including Oscar Best Picture Slumdog Millionaire, and he and TriStar’s Hannah Mingella scooped up this one before lunch after reading Hodge’s script last night. The screenplay is based on Welsh’s Trainspotting follow-up book Porno.

Hodge also penned the screenplays for the Boyle-directed A Life Less Ordinary, The Beach and Trance.

I can't wait for it. Begbie is one of my favourite movie characters ever. The soundtrack was such a big part of the first one, with most music being ****e now it will be interesting to see what they put on there.

    Reckon it will be excellent.

Obviously it's going to be a far different perspective of life than the original (with regards to some of the characters more than others perhaps) but that's what makes it all the better for me.

Nobody is doing this for the money either. Or at least none of the big players, director, main stars etc and so it's being done for all the right reasons, to give us another great film that has to be a recipe for something decent.

Hopefully it will be decent. Enjoyed Filth.

From out there on the moon, international politics look so petty. You want to grab a politician by the scruff of the neck and drag him a quarter of a million miles out and say, ‘Look at that, you son of a bitch’.

Maybe they're going with a supernatural angle.

Be interesting to see how closely they stick with the book in this one. Hopefully don't stick to the same ending.

I'm almost certain it was said that they'll be taking bits and pieces of Porno while going along with an original story they came up for this.

Really hope they can nail it or at least enough to be a worthy sequel, Trainspotting is endlessly watchable. When I think of films that stand out in the 90's, that's one of the big ones for me.

Wish they'd make a movie out of Marabou Stork Nightmares. That's Welsh's best book by a bit imo.

I'm convinced Boyle mentioned somewhere that he wasn't massively impressed by the book... he said it'd be inspired by it but probably that's about it.

Interesting to see Sherlocks spiral before he had to move to New York. Wait, no. Trainspotting sequel. Right ;)

very long time since I read it (or any Welsh book) but I recall it being relentlessly grim.

Looks very impressive, has a tough job to top the first film as that was a game charger. But I'm expecting at least a very good film out of this. Good to see the whole cast back, as well as Kelly McDonald as Diane as she has a important part in Porno. I wonder how close Danny Boyle will stick to the book. Also great to see McGregor and Boyle make up after the fall out from the whole The Beach debacle many years ago.

Relentlessly grim, but creative and surreal as hell. One of the most underrated novels of the 90s. It would make a great movie if someone could pull the three threads/timelines together.

Trailer looks class, and Boyle has been on fire recently (his last two movies Steve Jobs and 127 Hours are both excellent) but Trainspotting 1 is one of the great films of the 90s. Hard to see this coming even close imo.

At least they're not basing this on Porno. That was one shìte out book.
