Don't know about jealousy but a dislike of someone representing the country by some purely of where he's from is pathetic .....there are those who don't like his personality that's acceptable, but cheering on some Yank from a place in America they couldn't point to on a map because of McGregors accent? fuk that

Who couldn't find California on a map to be fair..

I personally like Conor but surely anyone can see he acts a bit of a d1ck at times and surely people can see why some people dont like him. Nate is a very likable character, both diaz brother always have been. Me personally I hope Conor kills Nate but I can see why people prefer Nate, when he rolled up to the press conference in a taxi and a dirty t **** for the last fight was priceless :pac:

You mentioned where Diaz was from

And you mentioned he was a stoner

"What has that to do with anything"

Nothing, nor did I give the impression I dislike him for either reason....if you're on an Irish based forum and and come up with the term 'bling Dub' as a reason for dislike that gives off another impression entirely

No he didn't, he used it exactly as you used Stockton when talking about Diaz - as a descriptive.

The fact it's an Irish forum doesn't matter a ****. Nobody is obliged to like or cheer for McGregor simply because he was born on the same patch of earth.

Well maybe it's just me but I just don't understand that, I don't think it happens in any other sport .......me? I'm cheering on an obnoxious nacker from Skibbereen if he's sporting a tricolor

Another reason I suspect the dislike of McGregor is the fact he's open up a somewhat closed niche sport to a wider audience, newcomers and their opinions are unwelcomed ......it's a form of snobbery in my opinion

    No I agree with that.

There are plenty of Irish sporting people I wouldn't be rooting for or even Irish teams I couldn't give a toss about.

I cheer on McGregor because I like him.

I was up for Poirier to beat Duffy because he's one of my favourite fighters.

Yeah but many on here would still rather cheer on a stoner from Stockton in Californ-i-a getting those 'slaps' in

    Spot on!

You probably think that's patriotic or something. Not referring to McGregor here, but I tend to judge people more on their choices, character and values than where they merely happened to be born.

Personally I like Conor but I'd usually back any Irish fighter even if I'm not their biggest fan, I'll never get that part of the Irish mindset that pains some people to see Irish people doing well!

It's nothing to do with that, or "begrudgery" as some will inevitably term it. There's a world of difference between not feeling compelled to support and cheer someone just because they're Irish and actively hoping they lose for the same reason.

In MMA for example, someone like Norman Parke is a nasty little ****er. Why should I cheer him?

definitely not his biggest fan but any of his fights in the ufc I wanted to see him do well, nice to have guys from our little island performing at the top level

Im sticking to my prediction that Conor weighs in close to 160lbs, anyone changed their mind yet?

    I reckon 164

Unless he does a weight cut for some reason there is no way he's coming in close to 164. He still looks considerably larger now than he did vs Aldo and he was supposedly 165 in the cage versus him.

I'd say he'll be in and around 167/68 again. I've a feeling he actually cut a small bit of water weight last time out.

If I remember correctly John Kavanagh said McGregor not cutting any weight and eating everything around him the last time took away his 'hunger/fire/focus' and that this time around his diet will be restricted and he'll be cutting a few pounds to get in the right frame of mind. I think he said McGregor will be closer to 160 this time around.

How believable that is, is another story

that sounds legit. this is not a typical fighter/fight.

Im not comparing Conor to Bruce Lee, but if Bruce was fighting Jon Jones do people think Bruce would add extra weight to his frame, or stick to his speed&agility advantage with the lower weight

and the fact that he will need to cut down to 145 soon, it makes sense to start into that cut slowly/now. I'd like him to fight Aldo and then leave 145 alone after that and concentrate on 155

I don't think he would be foolish enough to willingly give up such a weight advantage, I can't stress how important weight is to people who don't fully comprehend it.

Maybe he would be, but I doubt it.

Possibly mentioned already but whoever suggested to Conor or presented him with the idea of creating his own YouTube channel with what his essentially is his own "embedded series" is a very, very clever man. Subscribers flying in during the channels infacncy. Who ever is doing the videos and running the channel could make a living off it in 6 months time at this rate. Just shows the power of social media and Conors influence.

Starting to cut to 145 now, in anticipation of a unification fight, doesn't make sense. It's literally the opposite of sense with a WW fight in 3 weeks imo.

The story from Conor's camp (John Kavangh) has always been that he is c.165lbs in the cage at FW. Which looks about right going by his condition on the scales. If that's the case why would he come into a WW lighter?

I'm not convinced that 168 was his walk around weight verses Diaz either. If doesn't tally with the story (again from John) that he was eating all around him in the build up. I think he was slightly north of 170 and overshot the small cut.

What about finding McGregor either dislikeable or distasteful has anything to do with self loathing?
You probably think that's patriotic or something. Not referring to McGregor here, but I tend to judge people more on their choices, character and values than where they merely happened to be born.

Choices: Gave up an apprenticeship as a plumber as his heart wasn't in it. Gave up hanging around with the wrong crowd, getting into trouble, out partying non stop to dedicate himself to Martial Arts, at a time where there was no clear viable path to fame, fortune or even a career that would pay the bills.

Character: Loyal to his friends, family and coaches. Same girlfriend now as when he hadn't a pot to piss in. Same coach now as when he walked in to the gym. Gave his sisters, mother and father new cars, paid their mortgages, invested in sisters business. Loyal to the same friends he had when he had nothing - the likes of Lee Dunphy now running TheMacLife for him.

Values: Hard work, effort, determination. Donated to homeless charities in the run up to Xmas on a number of years. Gave a speech on bullying and suicide prevention. Gives countless time to his fans, always accessible for selfies and autographs. Win or lose in the Octagon shows humility, shakes his opponents hand and vows to come back as a better version of himself.

I've never understand why people dislike or even hate Conor McGregor.

What we have here is a success story. A guy who had nothing but a dream and has worked tremendously hard to try achieve it. A guy who could easily have let fame go to his head, forgetting the people who helped get him to where he is now.

Would have been very easy upon hitting it big to dump Dee Devlin in favour of some B-list celeb model, dump John Kavanagh in favour of Jackson-Wink, dump SBG and move to ATT or Tristar, dump his school friends in favour of fairweather celeb mates etc.

Instead he's shown humility, pride in his surroundings, pride in his family, pride in his roots. He still acts like a normal person. I bumped into his mam about 4 weeks ago and had a pretty long chat with her and it's easy to see why he'll always remain grounded beneath the promotional nonsense.

If people want to hate him for the promotional cockiness he displays then that's a pretty lame reason to hate on someone - especially given he's in a sport where it actively pays to be promotionally astute.

If people want to hate because he flashes his wealth with his nice cars, nice watches, nice suits etc then again a pretty lame reason.

That's what we all work for. Whatever our job or career is, we work and if we work hard, rise the ladder in the office, get promotions, don't we all like to buy nicer clothes or be able to afford a nicer holiday or a nicer car, or to be able to treat our girlfriend/partner/family to nice things?

Once you strip back all the showmanship what remains is a normal working class fella who has achieved success through hard work, determination and kept going through adversity - whether it was injury or defeat, he shrugged it off and kept going.

To my mind anyway, the reason he's popular and a good role model for young people is that his message is pretty simple - knuckle down and work hard in something you love to do and if you make a success of it, ENJOY IT - and don't be ashamed to enjoy it.

I can think of worse messages to give out to young people.
