The UWP weather app has been released as well, great to see these apps start appearing.

The UWP version of groove is up on the store as well, but it doesn't actually do anything yet.

Had a look at the Weather app last night. It's pretty cool how it tells you in the past 10 years, it rained 1 out of 10 times on this day or something like that :pac:

The new groove app, I can see it but can't get it to even install.

Identical to the Windows 10 desktop and mobile apps then (which I really like!), and I expect the Groove app will be the same, which is great because the current Xbox app is so old and clunky (the only feature in it I like is the music videos bit).

Saw the desktop/mobile Plex app got a really nice redesign too, so I'm hoping they'll be bringing that to Xbox also. And the Netflix app is okay, but it's amazing how incompatible it is with any voice commands or the Xbox app's remote keyboard.

Bit pointless unless you plan on setting your Xbox up in the garden.

Dark room on the beanbag does me :D

Everything outside of games is pointless to me with a dual monitor setup on my desktop and my tv to the right of me in the mancave, pc on one screen xbox on the other and side by side. Could see how these apps like background music are cool for those who game away from their pc/laptop but for me it's like a massive step back when I have a full pc set up available at will with a tiny turn of my head.

I have the same setup but I still like the option to have all these extra apps on my xb1.
I love what they're doing with uwp

Oh I agree , I'd say I'm in a small % who game like this and UWP apps will be massive for most. For me though it makes no sense to snap something on my game screen when I have a full screen to my left to reply on boards with and a kb and mouse :pac: . Also I bet our backs are in better shape than most from sitting in good office chairs as opposed to a couch :pac:

I can't game on the couch. I just can't get the same level of concentration at all!

    (Sorry, off topic)

The amount of people in the Preview program that don't deserve to be in it at all is laughable.

Constantly seeing people on Reddit asking why they're getting so many updates etc, they're obviously not checking patch notes or leaving feedback etc. whatsoever.

    The latest one for example:

"I was wondering if anyone knew why I would be getting an Xbox Live update nearly every single evening?
    It varies between 300 - 400 MB.
It's starting to get irritating as it takes me out of the game I'm in which makes me lose progress if it's not recently saved."

Another update at 2am tonight btw. Mike Ybarra teased via a tweet that he was testing out the full background music experience last night so hopefully they squeeze that into tonight's update.

I still think it's outrageous that it's taken over 2 and a half years to implement background music. My favourite memories of the first Xbox are playing Forza with music I love playing in the background.

It was likely made more complex due to the design of the Xbox One, where there are three Virtual Machines running on the system (One for games, one for apps and one 'management' VM to help manage resources and switch between the two or snap the screen).

Most, if not all, Hypervisors let processing continue in the background when the virtual machine is out of focus (not the window in which you are now working), but certain functions such as audio will only be heard when the VM is in focus (the audio processing will still occur, I.e. Your song will continue forward playing and when you go back to the window it will have advanced by the same amount of time as the duration you were away from it ... Basically, "If a tree falls in the woods and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound?").

Possibly the advances in Windows 10 Anniversary Update that make this background audio possible is the use of Containers These are essentially Micro Virtual Machines that can be used to start up and run services or processes for a certain task.

I'm glad to see the function finally here, as many have been looking for it for a long time, but I can only see it being used for certain types of games (Sport, Driving and maybe FPS) because for other games (Red Dead, Arkham Knight, Mass Effect, etc.) the game is so much better and atmospheric with the developer audio.

Regardless of how it came about, I still think it's pretty clear that they released a product whose OS was unfinished. Priorities may have changed in the lead up to release, and have continued to evolve over time, but it's comical that features that were standard on the previous generation weren't there from day one.

Agreed. I think both systems releases were symptomatic of the current console "Ah, sure, we can patch that out later" malaise. Something doesn't need to be finished before it's released (or in some cases it'll be a couple of years after release).

It was around 400 for me this morning. So easy to miss one that I've been going in and checking first thing.

I think this is for EVERYONE not just Preview members as it's the build number we've had since 27th:

    OS version: 10.0.14393.1018 (rs1_xbox_rel_1608.160725-1822) fre

    Release date:
7/29/2016 (Assuming 2am tonight as usual)

    New or updated features:

Cortana available in the U.S. and UK:

    - Talk to Cortana on your Xbox One with your headset or Kinect. To start, just say "Hey Cortana" or launch the Cortana app. If you're not sure what to say, try "Hey Cortana, what can I say?"

    - If you're using Kinect, turn on your console by saying, "Hey Cortana, Xbox on."

    Background music:

    - Music apps will now be able to play music in the background. In an app that supports background music, just start some music. You'll be able to switch to other apps and games while the music plays.

    - After starting your music: To play, pause, skip, and adjust music volume from anywhere, double-tap the Xbox button to open the guide, choose **Multitasking**, then select your music controls.

    - The app must support background music. An updated Pandora app in the U.S. is the first app to support background music—and more are coming soon.

    My games & apps:

    - Your stuff is closer. From Home, move right and select **My games & apps**.

    - In My games & apps, there are new sorting options.

    - "Ready to Install" has its own area, so you can quickly find the games and apps you've purchased but haven't installed.

    - Game and app updates will show up in their own area, when available.

    - The queue area now tells you what's been recently installed in addition to what's in your queue.

    Language & location settings:

    - You can now choose your location separately from your system language. To change your language and location, double-tap the Xbox button to open the guide, select **Settings > All settings**, then choose **System > Language & location**.

    - All languages aren't available for all locations. When you choose a language that isn't usually associated with your location, most of the system will be in your chosen language, but you may see a mix of languages in areas like Store or online content.

Top PC games on Xbox Live:

    - Top PC games now have game hubs on Xbox Live. Whether you're on PC, Xbox, or mobile, you'll see what PC games your friends are playing, share PC game clips and screenshots, and message friends on Xbox Live. On Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs, you can join a party chat with your friends no matter what they're doing.

    New Store:

    - Xbox Store and the Windows Store have come together, making the shopping experience more streamlined. From Home, move right to **Store** to start browsing all content.

    - Preorders now get charged closer to game launch instead of at time of purchase. You can also cancel and change your payment option for preorders anytime at account.microsoft.com.

    - Customers in the U.S., Switzerland, Norway, Italy, Germany, and Finland can now use mobile operator billing to make purchases. Customers in China can now use China Union Pay.

    Find Facebook friends:

    - Live accounts. In the guide, go to the **Friends** tab, then choose **Friends > Suggestions**. Select **Find Facebook friends** and follow the steps. Your Facebook friends that have done the same will start showing up in your suggestions.

    Control automatic sharing:

    - You can now choose to automatically share your achievements, screenshots, and game clips to your activity feed. To change your sharing settings, go to Settings > Preferences > Activity feed.

Did you notice any changes in it? It looked identical to me, which is a shame as it could do with a good revamp

I didn't get the preview update this round because of the amount of bugs. But the needs to update tab is very helpful. Not sure how I feel about the games being in boxes and no games and apps at the bottom, understand why but will take some time to get used to

Installed the summer update today. Disappointed there is no improvement on the os\ui performance. It's frustratingly sluggish. Universal apps would have been great if it actually had any apps and Cortana of course not available in Ireland. I know I can now switch my language to the great united kingdom without changing my region, but Cortana's content is region specific. It's been out so long now they really need to start rolling it out worldwide.

    Overall, massive anticlimax.

Just noticed the on screen keyboard has a mic icon left of the space bar now, very handy for searching and replaying to messages without having to wake up sleepy Cortana :pac:

Did anyone else get an update last night?
As I was going to bed, I went to quit out of a game and there was a 414MB update.

See a huge thread on reddit about the same problem , mine is fine snappy almost. Still does that thing were it take 5 seconds for the guide to appear 1st time you use us it on that boot. There's definitely an issue there for some though, were you in the preview? It could be a case of me not noticing an issue as I was using the new dash for months and am used it being a certain speed :D

Yeah, I'm in the preview, a good bit slower than it was a while back, pain in the arse to navigate through.
