I hope cormier gets someone. Pretty ****ty to miss out on that big paycheck cause of a scumbag like Jones.

A guy who hasn't fought in..........4 years, getting top billing? Yes, money talks, but wrongly IMO.

True but unfortunately it's not how the world works. Same in sports in general, look at football and how players are valued, namely Pogba. While he is a fantastic player he's not valued at €145 million for his skill, he is valued at that because of his "brand" and how many jerseys and posters he'll sell for the club.

But I have to stress, Brock isn't just "a guy" the chap is sort of a one in a million guy. His size, strength and speed is remarkable and he also has a presence about him too.

Don't the ufc generally look after the guy when this **** happens? iirc its happened in the passed if they couldn get a replacement

Someone said on this thread that Dana stated he won't get paid if he doesn't fight. Don't know if it's definitely true but i'd believe it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,784 ✭✭✭froog

Hopefully they would after the guy. But they'd probably still take a hit on ppv points etc

They might look after him but he won't be getting his percentage of the PPV buys. That's where the money is.

I thought he said in the press conference that its usually the lower paid fighters who get compensated if a fight is cancelled

Na, Dana was asked this in the Press Conference and he said they do usually do it, but DC is rich anyway ha

They might reimburse him for training costs and what not. Though I don't think that cost would necessarily be that high. That and all the Reebok gear is usually handed out for free to gyms I think.

They might buy him a nice steak. ;)

Poor DC. This event would probably have doubled his net worth.

The UFC loses what little credibilty it had left if they don't jettison Jones.

193 as a whole, not a great lineup IMO. 3rd, behind 2 female fights. Weak. Considering too he was "at home". And then to go top billing in their "biggest event ever"? No. Just no.

The female fights were still title fights. Of course they were top billing.
Ronda was a massive draw, bigger than McGregor or anyone else at the time. There's absolutely nothing weak about Hunt being third on that card tbh.
Hunt is a massively popular fighter, and Lesnar is a massive draw. Questioning either is really weird imo.

    Classy from Kavanagh as usual.

Kavanagh should shut the hell up.

He's a bigger mouth than McGregor himself.

Really weird to question Mark Hunt headlining the biggest event in UFC history? And really weird questioning the other guy being someone who hasn't fought in 4 years+?

It would be really weird IMO not to question those facts right there.

He was below JoJo on 193. Just cos it's a title fight does not make it top billing. There's a lot weak about him being below Jojo. In his "home" area.

It's easy to get confused when you view the UFC (I know) as a sport only.

Exactly. I know well it's about the business. Just saying, if I had bought tickets to this, and that was the main event, I'd be a little p!ssed. Just a little mind. But well worth questioning.

This is Brock Lesner a huge huge draw, I know you only follow MMA a few years (not begrudging) I just find it amazing you never heard of him, his name had to have come up looking over past history no?

this is a huge draw and if I was going this is the fight id be upset about if it got cancelled, regardless if he was fighting a brick wall. to say you saw a Lesner fight tops alot of things.

Nate Diaz fight before conor was 3rd on a fight night.
cejudo before mighty mouse was 3rd on TUF latin america

its all about the pull of a fighter and Brock has the largest one.

UFC are offering refunds but id be surprised if many take it

    It wasn't a joke though.

    It was a cheap shot.

I don't think you can call it a cheap shot with Jones' history. Is Jones suppose to receive no backlash or criticism from this when it basically ruined Silvas reputation, Jones is a horrible person and a cheat.

it was a shot at Dana not at Jones
no need for it. i'm going off JK tbh

Well I honestly knew very little of him. I'd heard plenty about JJ, and GSP, but very rarely did his name come up in any of the coverage I've seen.

It's a bit out of the blue, and without pullouts it would be 3rd on the list here, so, I think it's very normal (and not weird as some have said) to question it being the top billing. Sure it's still an interesting fight, but I'd much prefer 2 recent fighters at the top of their game going for a belt. Lesner v Hunt is certainly not that.

I thought it was about a tweet someone mentioned earlier in the thread saying " When I die, I want john Jones to bury me so he can leave me down one last time"

    My thoughts too.

He comes across as if he's constantly trying to pick a fight with Dana/UFC which feeds into the impression I've been getting that Conor thinks he is bigger than the organisation.

PS, I'm talking about the jab at the UFC about pulling Conor from UFC 200 over the press issue, not the joke about Jones letting him down.

    Cannot believe it.

Gutted for Cormier first off. Losing a ton of money and a chance of avenging his only defeat. I'd say he couldn't believe how fans were cheering Jones at the press conferences. A guy who hit and run a pregnant woman was more popular than him. Madness.

He is a scumbag of the highest order. If this is a ped violation he is even less than a scumbag, whatever that is. If he is found guilty (which is very likely) he has ruined his career and his legacy. Guys would kill for his talent and athleticism and he's just fcuked it all away.

People complaining about the main event are amusing. Brock going to the main slot was the only move to make. It's a business who's primary goal is to make a profit. As said above Aldo-Edgar did 330k buys, no one outside of Mma fans has heard of Nunes. Brock is a household name compared to any of them.

I still think this event will break the UFC 100 1.6 mill record.

Oh almost forgot, John Kavanagh is a cock. How he can post that after the UFC just losing their 200 main event is baffling. Is he trying to make an enemy out of Dana? Take Conor away and JK is a nobody training average to below average fighters.

Look, I think everyone gets that it makes business sense after shrewdness's post. And this is a business. However that doesn't mean we all have to accept it. I know there is very little alternative, but it still sucks as a main event, and THE main event, on UFC 200. It's just a disappointment IMO.

Had this conversation on another thread a few weeks ago, and was told that all main events are 5 rounds these days, and that's been the way for a while? Why isn't Lesnar Hunt 5 rounds now, is it just because its only on 2 days notice or?

I'm a big Brock fan, seen him live twice, but I still don't think this should be the main event. I'm just not a fan of non title fights headlining over title fights.

But the options are limited. The UFC have just lost a ton of money because of the waste of so much promotion on Jones. They're going to lose a lot more in missed PPV buys and refunded tickets (the event was already not sold out apparently).

So sadly it's not about what's right, i.e. the title fight is more important and should take top spot.

The fact is that neither Aldo-Edgar nor Tate-Nunes are very interesting fights for the casual fan and it's the PPV buys from those casual fans that matter to the decision making process.
