I just installed GSAM battery monitor, along with its companion app for rooted phones.
I've Xposed installed so then stuck on Amplify and Greenify from the App Store.

It's down to 73% (with loadsa Viber and Facebook and some gaming) from this morning so that's actually improved already. It's just sad the hoops we've to jump through these days for a decent battery life.

EDIT: Actually, on that note. Has anyone purchased a secondary charger for their phone? Looking for one for work and a cigarette lighter charger for me car. I went to buy some and then saw all this jazz about 56 ohm resistors and then just gave up. Ideally I'd just like one that'll charge me phone safely that I could keep for a few years.

I've not rooted or such, but I think I'm noticing a bit of an improvement since the OTA. Ill see what GSAM has to say after a week or so.

As for chargers, I'm getting on grand with these:

I purchased an Anker Quick Charge 2.0 portable charger last year, and I think it's a pretty useful thing to have. Don't use it a lot, but it's good to have. Haven't timed the charging speeds with it, but it seems pretty much as quick as my QC 3.0 wall charger.

Other than that, I have a couple of micro-usb to usb-c adapters. Can always find a micro-usb cable lying around.

So do those adapters have this fabled 56k Ohm resistor? Apparently using a charger without it will damage the charger. Not sure if it'll damage the phone. I dunno why it's changed from having a simple charger that'll work for everything. Must be the increase in power output.

But anyway, I just wanna be really (perhaps overly) careful. The last thing I want to do is damage me phone or laptop or me car battery!!!

Was actually looking at this fella for me car:
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B016LPD82O

That along with a good cable is looking like the only safe option.

I have that Anker car charger... It's superfantastico... I only use high quality cables. Generally all cables on Amazon have been highly tested as there had been a previous controversy over quality from some manufacturers. Read the reviews.

Without the 56k ohm resistor you could potentially damage your usb ports on your laptop too, if you suck too much power down the usb c side. I'm using an anker cable i got on ebay and their 20k mah qc 3 portable battery.

Incidentally the htc 10 doesnt support usb c fast charging so a charger with a usb c connector will only charge at normal speeds. It has to be a qc 2 or 3 portable battery or charger you use.

The usb c on the 10 is only for data transfer speeds when using usb 3.0 or 3.1 on other side. It makes no difference to charge speeds. A lot of people do not realize that.

By the way is there any video player app that lets you stream from google drive. Mx player and vlc dont

Regarding rooting the HTC 10, if I root it, and later want OTA updates, is it just a question of unrooting (flashing back the stock image using twrp) and relocking the bootloader ? Or is it more complicated than that. Max Lee says you need an RUU and not sure if there would be any of those available from Three.ie.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CcUqwYEgYyc

Regarding flashing a Viper rom after root, rootjunky says a lot of his htc functionality is gone after installing viper. But I assume when he means 'he probably should have installed more of the htc sense stuff' he is talking about the htc apps from the playstore. See 10.15.

I would just pay for sunshine, and not worry about all that relocking stuff.

Viper don't remove any HTC functionality, they only add features.

Thanks. One query. If I root and leave stock firmware on and later decide to return to factory settings for whatever reason, what is the easiest way to do this.

I would normally run a RUU, but there might not be one for your variant.

Another option is to perform a backup of your system image as outlined in the post here:

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=66548846&postcount=3

then you can restore this when needed.

S-off is definitely your best option, then you can essentially make your device an international unlocked variant. If you decide to sell, just flast the standard WWE RUU to make it stock.

When I was getting my upgrade with three they were really pushing the m10. The s7 edge was ticking more boxes for me but the m10 appears to be a return to form for HTC. I was disappointed with the m9 last year so good to see they lifted their game

That sounds brilliant. So is there a guide on how to change it to an international unlocked variant ?
Probably just root it tonight and will use that modified supersu that doesn't decrypt the user data as I have read that kills the radio.

So if you're S-OFF, you can flash an OTA update?

Can you not just restore stock recovery and install it OTA?

You can pretty much just change your carrier ID to an international one, and then flash the WWE RUU.

You need to essentially return your device to stock, not just the recovery. If you're s-off, you just flash the latest firmware, which is a 2 minute job.

Perfect. Changing carrier id and flashing wwe rru sounds very interesting. Incidentally what was the carrier id of the 10 you got from htc. I assume it had the wwe rru.

    My CID is HTC__001

    I think 3 uses something like H3G__001

Normally you would go SuperCID, which is 1111111, and allows you to flash anything. You still have to be careful that you're flashing something compatible, though.

OTA update from three today version 1.80.771.0

Thanks. So if i rooted, soffed, and changed ccid to htc__001, and then flashed the wwe ruu, would HTC then send out the OTA's ?

Yup, although if you use a custom ROM (which you should), OTA's from HTC will be disabled.

If you use a ROM like Viper, they use the HTC OTA system to send out their ROM updates.

Just about to apply SuperSU and am confused which version to use

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-10/development/root-supersu-2-71-forceencrypt-verity-t3373258

It seems SuperSu will set the user data flag to encryptable so the user partition gets decrypted if you wipe the data after root. Makes sense. But this breaks the radio. So topjohnwu modified SuperSu (2.74.2) so forceencrypt is the default. However the S-OFF Dev Jcase does not recommend using this version of SuperSu as he says : "you really need to remove verity, this is going to cause many many many issues, its going to softbrick a huge number of phones, anything from a lot of root apps, to restoring a twrp backup is going to trip dm-verity"

So the question is which version of SuperSu should I use now ? The one in the XDA thread above modified by topjohnwu which is recommended by many and is even linked to from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-10/how-to/guide-root-optionally-s-off-radio-t3373025
or the original unmodified code from chainfire https://plus.google.com/+Chainfire/posts/N6EARb8LF3d

Which I guess means I used topjohnwu's modified SuperSU

I just did the same this morning after reading lots of forums :)

So I am just about to S-off now. Interestingly I was watching the video guide (root junky) and because s-off wipes the user data (effectively decrypting the partition and crippling your radio) you have to physically boot the phone into HTC Download Mode (up/down volume + power) and then into recovery mode so you 'wipe encryption' and 'format data'. This will re-encrypt the data partition and restore your radio. As a bonus your root access is also gone so you have to re-root.

It's near the end of the video
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mo6S9lLluJw

I assume you had this "issue" also :)

I guess once I am past this stage, I am wondering should I write SuperCID "fastboot oem writecid 11111111" or "HTC___001" before flashing a custom Rom. And if I decide not to flash a custom Rom or things go wrong flashing the custom Rom, I suppose I can go with stock and flash WWE RUU. Would this replace twrp with stock recovery and allow OTA's directly from HTC on either SuperCD or HTC___001 ? I guess I am asking should I flash the CID and which one should I go for to give me the best outcome in terms of recovery and receiving OTA's ?

Also, what custom rom do you recommend ? Thanks again

I actually didn't ever have to format data. S-off makes you lose all your data anyway. To be honest, I can't really remember....I just followed that guide and all went smoothly.

You don't need Super CID for a custom ROM, it will work whatever your CID is. You will need to for flashing firmware, though.

I don't see the point of unlocking bootloader and going s-off if you want to keep receiving HTC OTA's. All custom ROMs have these updates put into their ROM updates, anyway. If an HTC update changes the firmware as well, then you just flash the new firmware.

As I've said before, I'm biased, but Viper10 is the best ROM. I've done stuff for them for years - beta testing, theming, managing the hub, general mods. The guys who do that ROM are proper developers, and are head and shoulders about the likes of LeeDr0id and BaadNewz who aren't really coders.

Root guys point was exactly that. Because S-Off makes you loose your data, the partition get decrypted and kills the radio. So you have to format the data partition to ensure it re-encrypts. I guess I will find out. LOL.

Thanks. I do want a custom Rom though, as I am tired of the look of Android and while I could just use a different launcher, I also want to get rid of bloat.

I really didn't think of the difference between firmware and rom to be honest. I thought a custom rom would have whatever firmware was required. So say I go down the viper route, and at some point HTC launch a new update which is incorporated into the viper rom, but HTC also launch a firmware update that is required; do the viper guys inform users they need to install a new firmware ?

And if you have S-off I assume you can install the HTC firmware regardless of you CID. If you don't have S-off you will need to change to SuperCID or HTC__001 in order to installs HTC's firmware.

So, I guess once you S-off and are going custom rom, no point in modifying the CID ?

ROM and firmware are separate. Sometimes an updated ROM based on new firmware will work with the old firmware, sometimes it won't. The developers always recommend that you match your firmware to the base the ROM is on.

You probably will still need to SuperCID, or at least change your CID to flash the firmware packages. When you flash the zip, it would have a file that checks against your CID. If it matches, then it will flash.

There is a thread by @SneakyGhost about firmware. Give that a read, he is German and likes to explain things in great detail :pac:
