You'd be better off saving your money tbh, no noticable difference there at all I would imagine. None of those tasks are particularly intensive, in that an i7 is already overkill.

I figured the I7 was overkill, I only found out what the spec was today.
The I7 is going to be used as a back up/second PC (he works from home)

If I rephrase my question - for the current things he uses the PC for is there any point in considering an I7 Skylake or is an I5 enough ?

i5 is enough, just get a good quality SSD in there - my work PC chugs & I'm pretty sure it's because the poor mechanical is constantly bogged down with full-drive encryption.

Anyone had issues with MSata SSDs overheating? OEM Toshiba unit that was known dodgy in macs of the time died(And was revived by baking it) and I replaced it with an MX200. Now the MX200 works for a few minutes after boot then completely freezes up essentially crashing the machine. Main temp sensor is only at 39*C but thats only measuring a single point.

Right, just bit the bullet on this

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01A3VA9NI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Cant find any reviews etc. for it, hoping it will be alright as i said, its mainly for productivity. Though hoping ill still be able to play the odd non taxing game on it with the hd7970, mark of the ninja, rocket league, pong etc.!

Edit: Cant wait to try Euro Truck, even with the settings turn down, if needs be

Right this arrived early, im well impressed. My work laptop also can output to 3440 x 1440 so looking forward to the next time im doing drawings etc.

Before getting it I was wondering how my HD7970 would cope so i ran some benchmarks for any games i had that had ones built in (and the uningine one valley and heaven), ran with high settings with AA etc. turned off at both 1080p and 3440 x 1440. It didnt do to badly, looking at average reductions for min, max and average FPS of 37%, 48% and 46% respectively. The Unigine benchmarks had the highest reductions in average FPS, and out of the games GTA V (72 to 39) and Tomb Raider (98 to 50).

Dont have the budget to upgrade anytime soon, happy enough in the meantime even if im turning down a few settings. Might look at the RX480 later in the year though once its reviewed etc.

Very nice, it would indeed be proper for CAD work. Tempted to buy a 21:9 for ages....

BTW lads, where's the best place to but a Win & PRO key these days?

    That's your old hd7970 I'm running!

The last few I got off a guy in Sandyford, they were unused keys from broken laptops, he occasionally has win 7 pro, usually home licences though. Think I might pick up a few more 7 pro keys myself before they are impossible to find

Is there any advantage to having a separate system drive SSD as opposed to the current set up I have which is a large SSD for the OS and Games partitioned to make backup easier.

Por... I mean data files and back ups go on a mechanical HDD.

Can I take the Samsung 950 pro off my Amazon wish list as a waste of money - what will I waste money on if so - I'm sure I'll think of something!

You can format the OS without losing games and vice versa.

    What about wasting money on.......games?

I mean any speed advantages :) It's already partitioned.

Games aren't a waste, they're in the budget just before the mortgages!

Good news. I happen to know a girl who works for the delivery company, but in a different office, so she's going to have a look into it for me.

6 freaking weeks later. No update and no help from either company.

Lightpack have all but gone silent, basically saying get stuffed. Courier company have stood by that "it was delivered line" and sadly the bank can't/won't refund the money to me due to that.

Conveniently though, that particular driver has since been let go from the company.

In the wise words of James May. Cock.

I guess just start the long road of initiating a chargeback, it'll take a while and you may have to hound your bank quite a bit to remind them that they work for you, you do employ them to take care of your money after all. You'll get your money back eventually. it just might take a long time.

Just got out of the bank before posting this. Want them to push ahead with the chargeback but I've no idea how long it'll take.

Have to say I'm well annoyed with the courier as I've used them a good few times over the years and never had an issue. I do find it quite amazing that the driver in question has been let go.

You could try the consumer guy on the Anton Savage Show on Today FM. He seems to like these kind of tricky consumer issues. Send your tale of woe to consumer@todayfm.com.

Oneplus, the phone company refunded me the money when my parcel was mis-delivered by anpost.

I had to open a dispute with them stating that package was never received.
They investigated for 3 days, and then came back saying it was lost.

It helped that an post started an investigation and couldn't find the package.

You could also go to the gardai, small claims court, or wait for the chargeback.

B***ocks to that. I can't blame Lightpack too much for running away screaming from this kind of dispute if they really are a fairly green crowd without a load of experience with this kind of breakdown, but the courier are taking the mick. They cannot take that stance unless you've signed for the item. Not sure if you can go after them directly or if you must go through Lightpack, but either way they're either culpable for your loss or for Lightpack's loss if they're the ones stuck refunding you or getting the chargeback hit.

Of course, if they claim you have signed for it, which you haven't... then its pretty much a case for the gardai at that point

The contract (of sale) is with Lightpack, so Sonics2K can't go after the courier directly. That's for Lightpack to do.

What I'm surprised at in all of this is there has been no proof of signature provided. Anytime I've had an issue with a delivery, the supplier will usually get the signature within a couple of hours of my query. Then I go hunt down the bsatard who has my delivery under his desk!!! :p

I'm not trying to blame Lightpack, and I kinda don't want to because as far as I can tell they did their part. But at this point I'm going to have to start pushing them more.

The courier company in question had a "technical issue" getting me a copy of the delivery note, which took like 4 weeks to solve. The one they sent me just has a vague squiggle on it. All I can say for sure is that it's not my damn signature and not my neighbours signature.

I really don't want to go down the legal route, for one thing I never worked up the balls to tell herself about this as it was supposed to be a surprise.

I'm afraid the only ones you can get resolution to this problem is from Lightpack. If you want to sort this and they say they have proof of delivery because of an indistinct squiggle, then you will need to pursue a legal recourse.

If they are based in Ireland, then you can use the Small Claims Court procedure.

If they are in the EU, then I'm not sure if the Small Claims works, but the European Consumer Centre should be able to assist.

If they are outside of the EU, then pray the chargeback comes through and chalk it up to experience. :(

Go after Lightpack , they didn't fulfill the contract with you as their delivery company let them down and didn't deliver.

Tell them you will be starting chargeback but you would rather resolve it with them first. Explain how it would be quicker and easier for them to give you a new product with a different delivery company rather than for this to drag on and spill into social media.

See this big news should be able to swap out motherboards with less hassle now.
Microsoft Eases Activation Restrictions With Windows 10 Anniversary Update
Ever since Microsoft MSFT +1.24% introduced its anti-piracy activation scheme with Windows XP all those years ago, it has been a thorn in the side of hardware enthusiasts. To put it simply, Microsoft’s Windows Activation scheme uses a unique identifier, generated by the specific components in a computer system, along with a personalized serial number for the OS, to activate and tie a license to said system. Performing minor upgrades usually didn’t cause any issues, but if you performed a major upgrade – like replacing a motherboard and processor, for example — the OS would assume it was installed on another system and de-activate automatically, and force a call into Microsoft’s activation support line.
