Is anyone here familiar with bash scripting? I'm trying to implement a script to notify me when transcoding speeds fall below the minimum speed of 1:1. However, I can't get it to work as I want.
    #!/bin/bash
    filename="/mnt/user/Luke/transcode.txt"

    cd "/mnt/user/Docker Config/Plex Media Server/Logs"
    tail -fn0 "Plex Media Server.log" | grep speed | cut -d'&' -f3 | \

    while read line; do
            echo "$line" | cut -d'=' -f1
            if [ $? < 1.0 ]
            then
                    echo "Transcode is going slow"
            else
                    echo "Transcode is OK"
            fi
    done

    Basically:
    1. Read the Plex server file
    2. Looks for all line that contain the phrase 'speed'
    3. Cut out only the 'speed=X.X' part of the line
    4. For each line cut the output so I only use the number (e.g 2.6, 13.4, etc.)
    5. If less than 1.0 notify me that it is slow

BUT the while part doesn't seem to work. My tail command works fine prior to that until I try working on the output. As an alternative approach I tried:
    tail -fn0 "Plex Media Server.log" | grep speed | cut -d'&' -f3 > $filename

But this never adds anything to the file.

As a test to ensure my syntax was OK I tried this:
    tail -fn0 "Plex Media Server.log" | grep speed | cut -d'&' -f3 | \
    while read line; do
    echo $line
    done

But nothing gets echoed.. What am I doing wrong?

You can't do -fn0 "Plex Media Server.log" to the best of my knowledge.

    Try -f "Plex Media Server.log" -n +0

Similar were demo'd at CES in like 2010, never seemed to be an idea that really got off the ground.

I've got a GTX 660 I want to sell. It's an OEM model (came in prebuilt machine from Dell and HP). It has 1.5GBs VRAM. Any idea what I should be looking for it?

    €50-75ish I would have thought?

It's still a bit faster than a GTX750Ti and uses a single 6-pin connector, so I'd say €75 should be achievable.

Balls. Saw this tech cash back scheme mentioned by a mod over on the OcUK forums, but for some reason, Ireland doesn't seem to be part of it. Anyone know anything about it?

Never seen one of those before on components but I've seen them before on laptops/tablets/tvs that sort of thing. Usually they have pretty strict criteria so make sure you follow the instructions 100%. If you submit it even a day late you won't get a penny. The whole idea of these things is that people forget or don't bother going for the cashback.

Thanks. I put it up for 85. Hopefully I get a decent offer for it.

    Found out the issue.

Eir are having nationwide broadband outages at the moment and only 3 support agents on call.

Have you heard of this crowd? They are from not too far away from you. Mate of mine got it in the other week and says its a massive improvement - but thats coming from his 2mb adsl.

I am thinking of making the switch now too. My exchange was upgraded last week but not seeing any change (probably because Im about 5k from it!). Im still stuck at 2.4mb.

Ya need line of sight to the mast alright.

    Hey Deerjer

Im actually happy enough with Eir broadband. Normally it never causes me issues but just last night was dreadful but its fixed now.

I get 17mb down all day long on my connection.

Im happy enough with that in a area that wont have fibre until at least 2017-2020

Ah right, didn't realise your connection was that good. Just me so :(

You could try ringing another provider and asking what the max speed on the line is. I did this before for my parents when they had a 1mb line with Eircom. They changed to UTV (after I rang UTV) and they were able to give us 3mb even though Eircom said that was impossible.

Since then, I have found it's not unusual for different companies to give different speeds by default but if you ring them they usually will up it from the default.

Of course have the opposite problem now where my parents had 4mb with Eir and they changed to Vodafone and the speed has dropped to 2mb. It's probably just a matter of ringing them again but I just haven't got around to it.

In fairness, I had Eir or eircom as is was ages ago for almost 10 years and in that time, I had very little issues. Their customer support got A LOT better in last 5 years. I would even put them the best customer support on phone out of all irish companies.
The only reason I cancelled it was, because I moved in with misses and she works in Virgin media. Which means boradband, phone and TV all for free. Cant beat that deal, even if I liked eir as service. :)

In other news: 1060 announced for 249$ and founders 299$ ( this whole founders thing should feck off and die ). They claim speeds will be at the level of 980+ with 6gb ram. Interesting to see the actual reviews and benchmarks. If its true, its a really nice card for less then 300 quid.

Ya its a 4mb line and the 2.4mb has been consistent with both Eir and Sky. I also didnt have any issue with Eir but got a good deal of sky for both broadband and tv.

My house is also surrounded by a fibre network. Only problem is it belongs to the ESB. Largest fibre network in the country apparently.

How does it stack up compared to the 480? Seems a good bit more powerful, 480 is meant to perform similar to the 970. Of course, that's assuming that nVidia are genuine about its performance. How does it compare price wise. Seems like it isn't that much more expensive than the 480.

480 beats the 970 usually and is currently just under the OC'd from factory 970 cards. Quite a few reviewers bench-marked against non reference 970's, used old drivers, benchmarked in games that favoured Nvidia etc etc. In theory the Partner 480's could be close to the reference 980 or beating it as well because the OC'd 970's were just nipping at its heels.

If the 1060 beats the 980, its good for gamers again as it creates a pricewar that is ongoing with the 480/970. AMD might drop retail price a little as well to make up ground, they might have some headroom. Bu I don't expect to see many benchmarks comparing it against a OC'd 970/980 for some odd reason.

That's kind of a can of worms my friend. Without going to massive discussion:

Amd offering a cheaper card, that on paper should perform a lot better in dx12 with 8gb ram amd focus on multigpu setups. So 2x480 looks like a nice way to go, if you can afford only one now.
Nvidia on other hand just offers better raw performance for q bit higher price, but lower ram ( which I don't see real big issue in 6 vs 8 gb) and very shady future of multigpu setups.

The thing to do now is wait a month amd see a bit more mature drivers and get prices to settle down. At the moment all retailers just robbing people with higher RRP then it should. On top of that whole founders bull**** nvidia doing.

Its pretty much the ultimate f'u' to the typical Nvida consumer. We don't have any real stock, so we are attaching a brand name to the crappy reference cards and selling them at 50+ MSRP.
