I think this will be appreciated here:

    LGR - Building a 486 DOS PC!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,047 ✭✭✭Bazzo

The office PCs need upgrading. It's a small business, so it'd be 3 maybe 4 computers. Am I mad to be thinking of buying the parts and building them? Will it actually save me any money?

Depends, if a part goes belly up how long will that PC be out of action for? What if you are on Holidays? Because you built the pc's every time a mouse unplugs or a website fails to load, its on your head because you built it and you caused it.

I'd get leased pc's on a 3 year deal with next day business support.

It's not a big deal if a PC goes down and there's no issue with anybody being at fault if there are any problems. It's a very small family business and there are 2 of us that are more than capable of fixing any problems that might arise.

Studying in England the past 2 years, transferwise has been a life saver. Never used revolut but I assume they're much for much. The silver lining of this brexit crap for me is the exchange rate.

Those X58 mobo's are quite expensive for an old motherboard. Ebay would be the best bet to find one.

I dont understand it. At them prices I be better off buying a second hand build off adverts.

The reason I knew the prices I am still rocking a X58 system and my exact motherboard is for sale in the UK for €352. It would nearly make me want to sell my system.

You could actually pick up a faster full 2nd or 3rd gen i5 based PC for far less than the price of buying an X58 mobo.

It's not worth it at this point. The i7-950 even on its own is only worth about €50.

Just recently someone was selling msi gtx 980ti for 500€,i pointed out with link that you could buy it for 440 on ocuk brand new. Got blocked by the seller, also future buyer told me i am spoiling ad.
    2nd ti went for 450.
    Like wtf

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

Some people just can't face what the hardware is worth now and how it's plummted so abruptly. They're going for €420 new now, cheaper than the 1070, which makes sense - but to be fair, 980Ti owners were warned well in advance of this, so there's no excuse. I ditched mine the second I saw the writing on the wall and luckily it covered the cost of a 1070. GTx970's have also hit £199 now for decent versions but 2nd hand prices are still in the high 200's. But at the end of the day something is worth what people are willing to pay, not as simple as 'it can be gotten online for x price'.

We all know there's a serious cohert of dickheads on adverts that love to ruin peoples adverts with **** talk, smugly posting links without ever having the faintest intention of actually buying.

    ...
Ultra High Stryker gamer pc with Monitor for sale. Monitor wasalone €280 brand new, and headset was alone €110. Gamer mouse was alone €90 posted from America which means very hard to get even in Europe...

ah... when was €280 exactly? 2008?
monitor in question, looks like some 20" 1600x900.... and a "rare" mouse lol

Do they actually hope to sell it at that price?

We all know there's a serious cohert of dickheads on adverts that love to ruin peoples adverts with **** talk, smugly posting links without ever having the faintest intention of actually buying.

There are them and then there are the goons with consta to low balling offers buying parts. Then from them parts making a computer and selling way way way above cost price. And get their panties In a twist when they get low balled or someone even mentions hey didn't you buy that on here for buttons...

Then the pc vultures. That trawl buying up all the deals and selling them at above cost prices.

Frankly be nice to see a second hand site that had the feedback and tracking systems adverts does but not for profiteering it showed cost prices new. A transparent place you could recommend someone who genuinely couldn't afford it new. So they didn't have to have all the knowledge needed and could go to there and not be robbed by almost every greedy or delusional fool.

That kinda goes against the free market though. While I hate to see stuff like 'High end ultra gaming PC' that would struggle to get through Minecraft, at the end of the day the onus lies on people to do a bit of research and make an informed purchase.

I understand people paying above cost price for full PC builds naturally enough because a) it's still cheaper than buying in PC World or the like and b) despite peoples best efforts here to convince middle aged mothers and their 10 year old sons to build their own PC, the vast majority of people just want to buy something pre-built, hassle free, get home and plug it in. What's a 'rip-off' to someone who looks at it purely from a 'but I could build it myself cheaper' perspective is not objectively a rip-off. People seem to forget that the entire time.

What I don't get is people paying €280 for 2nd hand GTX970's when the exact same model, brand new, costs less than that. But at the end of the day if you took half a ****ing second to do the laziest, most elemental amount of research you would know that. But again the onus is entirely on the buyer.

Personally I think adverts needs to crack down on the dickhead's who treat the place like their own tech forum/agony aunt column/go out of their way to post random drivel. You either are interested or you're not - make an offer and/or use logical reason in support of it but otherwise just don't comment, simple as.

Also of course that from computers, to clothes, to cars, to housewares or whatever, there are people making money too, which is all part of it.

What you're describing is more like OCUK's members market where everything is priced fairly and the ethos is to offer good deals to fellow forum members. Could see something like that working pretty well here in this forum as well but they probably wouldn't allow it. Pretty amazing that as an outright commercial entity that OCUK allow it, fairly admirable.

A guy from adverts(don't know if posts here) picked up my R9 290 yesterday for €130. I started the pricing at €180 and he went in first low with €100.

I eventually got him to €130, and checking his posting activity saw he was clearly building a PC, and from the posts got an impression he was keeping to budget. So I was happy to take €130, remembering when I go to try source send hand parts for good value. Transpires he is building a PC for his son, and I feel like I've helped. If I played the long game pretty sure I would have got someone to pay more.

But then I also prioritise getting items sold quickly. While I'm not loosing money with something sitting there idle, if there isn't an initial flurry, it can slip your mind.

I just remembered yesterday I've a NAS that I made redundant when I moved house and want to sell. That was a month ago : / So while I havn't LOST money on it, I've gotten lazy with it. So that will be going up shortly at an attractive price to just get it sold.

I guess the other lazy part is me needing to format the hard drive coming with it, and the absolute effort of opening my PC to do it. And now I just remembered I should have done that when installing my 1070...fffs

Meanwhile, over on adverts, tempers flare as a very generous offer is turned down graciously....
