throw the word drug dealer in with McGregor Fan and the assumption is all the fans are of a certain ILK.

that's like taking the Orlando shooter and writing bloody " Kanye west Fan, shoots over 50 gay people".

assuming he like west but you get my meaning.

    WTF!!

    sorry maybe it's just me.

No it's more like "suspected drug dealer applies for legal aid, despite having flown to Las Vegas recently to see Kanye West".

Usually I agree that these stories are a loads of balls, sick of seeing headlines like "MMA fighter attacks girlfriend", "Cage fighter serious assaults innocent bystander in street",etc when the offender only trains in a MMA gym.....but I think in this case I don't really see a problem. The fact that he went to Vegas a few weeks before saying he could not afford legal aid is the whole point of the story. Maybe Mcgregor's name could have been left out, but it will guarantee a few more clicks than just saying "UFC(or MMA) fan applies for......"

yeah I agree with you both. It's like that last one along the lines of "McGregor trainer kills pensioner" or something to that affect.

It's gutter journalism but I do agree with the base of what Michael D says too, he's some bleeding neck on em asking for legal aid and drug dealing but then are you surprised. I just think who he went to see in vegas doesn't warrant a mention other than to as you say, catch the eye.
Personally I think it's a bit more maligned than just catching the eye.

    anyways.....back to MMA.

Conor facing off against (Good ol :pac:) Belfast boxers and gold medal hopefuls at the olympics, Paddy Barnes & Michael Conlan. Aldo with another olympic hopeful in Conor Wallace from Newry who was sparring!

good point, perhaps a fight at 155 before then

He's either knocked the movement stuff on the head or knocked posting it on social media on the head.

Its good of him to be helping out our olympic team at the same time. His inspirational speech for the team before the Euros the other night was pretty cringey I thought but the boxing lads could really get motivation from him, even though they've plenty of experience...but maybe help them if they move into pro ranks in future after the olympics

If anything he was getting help from them by getting to spar with a tall skilful world class Boxer in preparation for Nate. The lads need no motivation, they're well experienced.

Wallace fights as 165, he's around the same size as Nate, he's there to give Conor an idea of how to deal with someone of that size and weight.

I thought that Euro thing was a bit false, he's on record as saying he doesn't give a damn about any other sports

Think that was with regards to playing them when he was younger, he was only interested in fighting. He posted a fair bit about the soccer team during qualification, talking about he loves the passion etc. A few of the players are fans of his too, so I don't see what the harm is.

Antonio Margarito would be a good sparring partner ðŸ˜

    Boxing equivalent of Nate Diaz.

Anyone get the feeling that Conor could be doing right now what he always railed against. His Mantra was train smart don't overtrain cause injuries etc etc.

Now he got that loss its a bit more difficult to follow that Mantra.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,379 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

I'd imagine he's still doing the bodyweight and mobility stuff during his warmup. That's all fundamentally solid, but its warm-up not straining.

The pool noodle in he park

I think that was in reference to taking part himself. He was obviously always interested in boxing. And has history of supporting lads representing Ireland.
As do most of us to be fair.

What makes you think he is over training? Or what is it you think goes agaisnt that mantra?

I always took that idea to be agaisnt hard sparring, during every session into a fight, and not necessarily against training a lot.

Just wanted to highlight this instagram post. The UFC lists Conor as 5'9".

Michael Conlan's official height as per his IOC profile is 5'8".

Michael's height is likely to be accurately recorded, and he's as tall, if not a little taller than Conor in this picture.

I've been saying for a long time that Conor's height is over stated by the UFC.
I'm only 5'10" and when I've met Conor I've felt like I was clearly a few inches taller than him, not just an inch or so.

Added to that, I have no idea in hell how Conlan managed to make weight at 123.5 lbs for his bouts, he's no small boy!

hard to tell without a full length picture but you could assume mcgregor is barefoot cause hes sparring and cause conlans in jeans and a polo hes probably wearing shoes so that could speak for the apparent discrepancy, to be fair it wouldnt be unlike the ufc to massage measurements at the same time!

Conor is barefoot in the picture, but I can't imagine Paddy and Michael were let, or would attempt to go anywhere near the ring canvas in outdoor shoes.
JK runs a tight ship, and anyone stepping on his canvas or mats will have their outdoor footwear off!

yeah thats true, didnt think of that actually! wouldnt be surprised if the ufc added on an inch either way though!

Outdoor shoes now a chance, boxing shoes maybe.

But if you go back a page Devastator posted some face off shots.
    1" looks exactly right there

I'm 5'10. A lad I work with is the exact same height as me. He has a pic of himself and McGregor in crumlin recently, where he is at least 2 inches taller than McGregor.

Conor isn't standing up straight in the first pic.

If Conlon is 5'8 then Conor is at least close to 5'9 because he's bigger than him in the face off picture.

Yeah certainly looks like 1" between them but the heights posted above for both are on the generous side imo. I was stood next to Conor after the 196 presser & within about 10 feet of Michael before and I def thought they were smaller than that. Maybe they both wore platforms on the days their heights were checked :p

You can see Conor is barefoot in this pic, can't see Michael's feet to know though. Good to see JK's tight ship in action...wearing trainers :pac:

Following the session Wallace told Independent.ie that he had been suitably impressed by the Irishman's stand up skills, and that it had been an honour to work with his nation's fighting icon.
'I think he is a very skilful operator, his boxing skills are of a very high level,' he said. 'He definitely has what it takes to be a boxer. I'm privileged to be given the opportunity'.
The 20-year-old is targeting his own Olympic bow at Tokyo 2020.
Conlan also seemed impressed tweeting 'Great to see @TheNotoriousMMA work in the flesh, quality sparring with @wallaceboxing1 great work! #DiazMcGregor2.'

John has trainers he only wears in the gym, there are signs all over the gym saying no outdoor foot ware.

Anyone else notice that Conor uses different wrapping patterns on each hand (not just the material, but how they are wrapped), lots more padding on his left knuckles than his right. Interesting little detail.

Cruz does the same. He's probably broken a few bones in his left at this stage and he keeps it protected as possible while sparring.

Probably cos the left is his hammer fist!

He's just soft, needs to go Gunnar style and only wrap the wrists and nothing on the knuckles because he's a hard bastard.

You've much more punching power with a wrapped hand. Gunni doesn't wrap because it's better for grappling. Most BJJ guys use loose wraps.
