Noone can. The port is either blocked or something has ****ed up(but they dont feel the need to fix it). There must be another port that could be used or something.

As i said in a different thread: The college is using a different proxy/firewall now than they were using before christmas. The new one (squid) seems much smarter than the crappy novell one they used to use.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,464 ✭✭✭evilhomer

Yeah the squid firewall is much better (linux based :) ) then the old one.
they got a new server in and all it does is run the firewall. it's faster and also a transparent firewall too, you don't need a novell login to use the net. if you have a laptop just plug it in to a network cable and add the proxy settings.

    proxy : proxy.itcarlow.ie
    port : 8080

    and the DNS are

    149.153.1.5
    149.153.100.4

gateway and subnet mask depend on where you are in the college so check them on the machine before you use you own :)

    Thats brilliant!
I can just plug my laptop into a spare port in the LRC?

I was lead to believe that they had it locked out by mac address's is that how it was or am I way off?

Gimme another CGI:IRC link plz one that will work:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,459 ✭✭✭seanos

I didn't realise they had such an opinion to be honest of such sites.
They had 6667 open at begining of year, so I presumed it was viewed as not too serious, and it seemed to have been blocked by new proxy, so presumed it was default settings, or just more secure settings, in form of block all except ...

Since this does break college rules, not much can do really, as they said - their monitoring & if you break rules action will be taken.

Yeah... but now i can't connect to ANY of my irc channels :(

Surely there's another cgi::irc out there?!

Unfortunately if it is actually prohibited by the college rules then it would be against the Carlow IT charter to discuss bypassing their attempts to prevent you from using Irc in the college.

Also, there is not much you can do about this, try discussing with computer services and explain to them how irc isnt really a big deal. It doesnt use much bandwidth, it can be extremely usefull for research & help with projects/programs etc. and under absolutely no circumstances will it turn out like widemouth did several years ago.

That said, I doubt they would be willing to co-operate on something like this, I mean, but at least you will know, one way or the other if they are intentionally or accidentally stopping you from using irc.

If its intentional, just hope they dont block boards as well.

    :)

i dunno, i reckon irc is no great loss, afterall The general rule with people on IRC seems to be: Attractive, single, mentally stable; choose two

    :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 202 ✭✭jesusjones

Well I dont qualify for that so since I am neither Stable or attractive oh well!

I was kind of expecting this thread to be deleted after we mentioned that the admins read boards, why dont you people just walk up to their office with a big sign that says "I USE CHAT IN THE COLLEGE"?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,459 ✭✭✭seanos

    If you really want chat
you could always use the chat server the college PROVIDE you all...
there is java chat on Blackboard
    ......

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 483 ✭✭banbutcher

so is there no way of getting irc working on the college computers??
    any help would be good!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,459 ✭✭✭seanos
