right so, there has been a carlow IT chat room in quakenet irc network for the past week or two, but no one seems to be using it..perhaps because they don't know how ?

what you do is, download an IRC client ( www.mirc.co.uk), mIRC is one example. it's a handy little client and easy to use.

once it's dl'ed and installed (to the D drive of the machine you are on) open er up and enter the proxy settings.

when you open mirc for the first time a little box will pop up, close it. then the mirc options tab will pop up. enter your name, email addy, nickname and an alternate nickname (in case someone else on the server is using the nickname you originally chose).

in the mirc options tab, the "connect" category should be expanded..select the Firewall menu.

check "use firewall"

Protocool: proxy

hostname: proxy (it's technically proxy.itcarlow.ie but proxy works fine)

port: 8080

you don't need a user ID or password.

hit OK and the type "/server irc.phishy.net"

once you are connected to the server type

/join #carlowit

and boom, there you are in the carlow IT chat room, ready to talk ****e and pretty women.

THey have most chat rooms blocked even boards one, if you they to go through the website, but with mIRC you can get into the boards chatroom with no problems.

The boards chatroom is only an example.

back when i was in fisrt year every one used widemouth chat room. it would be full every day bit the tect heads found out and
started to ban ppl for a week or more, or take ppls id card, and quess what matt the dj from scragges used to do it as well,

the carlow it chat should be in msn chat or yahoo chat. irc is crap. no one would have any problem getting to it if it was in one of those. there could be a link to the chatroom here.

fyi there is a tecky from the carlow it on boards.ie so me most likly reads these posts .

also in second year we set up are own chat room inside collage only for the collage students

it was a java chat server running ppl just typed the ip of the computer it was on to connect to into the ie address bar and they could connect . seemed to work well for the while we had it up . just a thought . we could never get anyone outside the collage to join it tho they could never seem to get past the firewall

btw irc is better imo

if ppl do get probs w/ irc etc. alternate way to gain access is cgi:irc
gets by any security measures i've seen ... tends to screw up odd time, but unless use more than 1/2 sessions, is usually stable enough

the ****ers have actually blocked ssh , they blocked irc ports and ssh ports on a friday afternoon... came back on monday and irc was unblocked, but ssh was still gone..

Are you on a network that is behind a firewall? They could have blocked the necessary ports.

multiple reaons ... your route to network is broke ...
either network down, or the particular server your trying to use is broke.

give it while, try again, try reconnect to isp...

ftp ; sounds like yer isp is feic'd tbh ... reconnect may fix it ... make sure addy yer putting in is correct.

or put one up yourself [cgi irc available on sourceforge]
web-based irc, which uses port 80 & only http requests/data to connect to irc, bypassing firewall/other blocking crap [provided you can access the site normally]

The fcukwits/admins have seemingly found some sort of way to stop us from accessing it in college. Or it could be just a bad day.

Doubt it, tho, as the fcukwits have been stopping mIRC access fer the last couple of days, on and off.

would just like to point out that mirc DOES work, you just have to connect to the right irc servers and to setup mirc properly
download from www.mirc.co.uk
Mirc Options > Connect > Firewall > You should now see the page for configuring for proxy support.
Change firewall support ( little pop down box ) to server.
Change protocol ( another little pop down box ) proxy
Change the hostname to proxy ( your gonna have to type this in )
Change the port to 8080 ( you gonna have to type this too )
The server that i used to connect to today was sorlag.splatterworld.de
Your gonna have to type "/server sorlag.splatterworld.de" to connect to this
sorry for the detailed but retarded instructions but its just incase
