How much do you think Boards.ie is worth?

    Hey,

I'm just wondering - Boards.ie is reasonably well known by Irish internet users (maybe 20 - 30% know about it?)

I'm not sure if it makes any/much money, but it's not gonna cost that much to run (a few hundred a month at most.)

So, is something like Boards.ie worth money? If so, how much do you think?

    My figure... 50k.

It probably has more personal worth to the founders than an actual cash value.

It would be hard to put a value on something that doesn't sell anything. But yet gives information and amusment to people.

The potential for advertising revenue is staggaring, sure thats how google etc etc make their money.

Lol? A few hundred a month is "that much" when it's coming out your own pocket. Subscriptions, afaik, just about cover the cost of having three servers in a dedicated rack uploading 220GB of data per month. Then you have the cost to the admins of spending their time keeping it ticking over, adding new functions, tinkering and fiddling under the bonnet. And of course those very rare Sunday morning drives to Hosting 365 to manually reboot the machine.

TBH, the site has huge potential. The admins know it, but it takes time to make money, and time is something they're all stuck for.

    I'd go with €1,000,000. Minimum.

yeah, the potential is indeed staggering but, correct me if I'm wrong, but I've never noticed a single ad or pop-up or anything of that nature here :)

    long may it last

    1 million?! :)

I have to disagree on that. But I agree the site has large potential. They just need a business mind to take charge of that.

I have a server which transfers just under 2000 gigs a month, and that's on ONE server only. So I am sure they can cut down their costs. I can have it admined and running 24/7 for $249 a month. No expensive :)

    But I see your point.

With a small dedicated team*, and a number of portals, easy-peasy. In this country, we're not very organised, internet-wise. Look at the online shoppers here. The vast majority of them use British or other overseas retailers.

*This is probably the single biggest factor to overcome. Where do you get a small dedicated team when you've no money?

id say cost to sell would be 50k but running it per year must be about 2k- 3k, thats why i feel my contrubition of 50euros a year is good, i can put something in to something and get a good reward back

Whens boards going on the ISEQ index? :D

    Do the math yourself:

    Software -
Paying VBulletin for use of the wonderful interface and software we all use - 121.00euro Each (Depending on Rights)

    Hosting 365 Servers -
One server running with 10GB monthy costs 30euro so i dunno what the monthly bandwith of Boards.ie is so we'll just say 200GB so i;d say around 200-300euro

    Domain "Boards.ie" - Around 80euro per year

Boards.ie Partys - Depends on number of factors.

Staffing - I Dunno what the situation is on this but if Admins and studd get paid add that too.

So call it around 5 grand running cost a year? That actually looks kinda low, i;m sure its more. What am i missing, i just have hte basic stuff.

Thats very silly. Boards consists of several actual dedicated servers not shared hosting plans. Go check out their prices on dedicated servers and see a more realistic price.

You mean the daily 3am backup?
Staffing - I Dunno what the situation is on this but if Admins and studd get paid add that too.
Paid? The myth. Either that or proberly get your leg humped by "Mr Bronze":p

    =-=

The worth of boards.ie is fickle. On the one hand, if someone were to buy it, they'd want to get some revenue in return. If they charge, people will leave. Revenue from ads would have to be specfic to the forum, as I doubt a PS2 ad would get much attention in the Weather forum...

On the other hand, if shares were sold, then DeVore would be accountable to the intrests of the shareholders, and may be "asked" to make money out if it.

Yeah Backup runs at 3am, considering not that many people are on boards at 3am.

It's a reminder to go to bed/do some work (delete as appropriate).

I reckon it's worth sweet FA. I'd say the ad revenue barely covers the costs. If there's anything left over, it's chump change,

Whatever gobsh*te said it was worth €1m definately has some sort of mental retardation. If it was worth €1m, it would have been sold in a flash.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,099 ✭✭✭✭WhiteWashMan

then i suggest you know sweet fa about the people that run and own it.

"Hello! I'm new here, yet I feel my opinion on the internal running of Boards is second to none. Everyone else listen and pay attention to my opinion, please.

That whatshisname gobshíte who's been here for donkeys years, become an integral part of the community, and is an Smod obviously knows far less than me in my less than 1 month's experience."

because it belongs to the lads who started it and it's their baby,
would you give your baby away?

That "it's worth €1m" is the same as an inventor brings an idea to the table and says "It's worth billions". The potential is there to build boards into something that could be worth well beyond €1m. Obviously it's not worth that kind of money right now.

"Baby"? Its an internet forum. If it was worth anywhere near €1m, I'd sell it in a split second.

That's why you can't see the potential.
