went on Sunday, man it was HOOOOOT! which I think had an adverse affect on the crowd so far as most moderates like myself, who would like most of the bands but would not be a fan as such, found it easier to sit down on the grass and watch rather than get up front and lend solid support. man am I getting old! :)

anyways, enjoyable none the less, managed not to get burnt. stayed watching the main stage until James Brown and then got down! Huh!

    The bands I saw:

Streets: Utter crap. Their Lead singer was wasted and didn't seem to be trying hard. I have never seen so many bottles thrown on stage. When he said "goodnight wembley" at the end, it kind off sumed up their performance.

Green day: great set, really interacted well with the crowd. Played all their good stuff. The "I hate bush" stuff is really getting old at this stage. I want to listen to music at a festive/gig not listen to politics.

Prodigy: Caught the last few mins. Played their classics, really got the crowd going.

Keane: I really enjoyed them, especially since seeing them at the last oxegen where they were basicly nobodies.

Snoop Dogg: A Group decision brought me to Snoop. To be honest I don't like rap particularly much. However Snoop put on a great show and really got the crowd going. Probably the biggest surprise / highlight of oxegen.

James Brown: God love him he is getting old. They put on a big show but Mr Brown can't seem to hit the highnotes anymore. Retire gracefully?

The Killers: Enjoyed it mostly. Their lead didn't seem to interact with the crowd too well and got a few boos here and there. They were good but I think they are better suited to smaller gigs.

    General Gig Madness

Anyone see that dude walk naked from one side of the main stage arena to the other with a water bottle shoved up his ass? During the killers I think.

Our neighbours from Galway in campsite A7 had a fondness for finding balls in the campsite and spraying them with paint before launching them at unsuspecting people / tents.

The rash of tent burnings on sunday night (you bastards).

The girl on friday night who was ****ed on mushrooms and ran around the campsite shrieking like a banshee for a good portion of the night.

The general feeling of Mayhem and freedom to be covered in mud for 3 days :)

Interpol were really the highlight of the weekend for me. They were ****in' brilliant. I saw a bit of the Foo Fighters but I left to go and see New Order who were really excellent. Bit annoyed I missed Green Day. Also, first time I'd heard of The Ordinary Boys, who I thought were pretty good.

Of all the bands playing i must admit I was desperate to see the Killers. as a result i hit the pit during the streets just to secure a decent position. the sound there was fairly good at the front but honestly there was no energy in the performance. Bit disappointed but New Order well made up for it. As for everyone ranting about RyG, stop giving out its a festival with loads of choice. Must admit was a bit disapointed with the Foos, I'm not a huge fan and the performance seemed more for fans than anyone just wandering by but sure by the sound of it, the foo fans loved it. Loved Ian Brown but he has played almost the same set the last three times he played in Ireland, i'd liked to hear more of his solo stuff than the stone roses stuff. but they are classics I suppose. the biggest surprise of the weekend belongs to the beautifull south. first of all how could that chap wear an anorak in that heat an not die from heat stroke. but honestly never thought i knew much of their stuff but managed to find myself singing along. I think of all the bands that played, Greenday won me over, i might even buy an CD. Who cares if the show is a bit reharsed, sure U2 have made millions in the last year from that. As for the bravery, definatly a band who care too much about their image. did anyone else notice how the lead singer trew the mic away after each song and the roadie had to come out and set it up again. comic rock an roll! still it was definatly a high point of the weekend for me though

best band of the weekend was defo Death From Above closely followed by The Doves, the first band ive ever seen stand up to the security guards who were acting like pricks during their set.

jeez...you'd swear I had a vendetta against RyG....

...they are good at what they do - im not denying that, but I got really bored after the fist 10 minutes of Metallica intros, followed by insane cheering combined with out-of-time clapping...

...plus that tent was so horriby warm

brillaint weekend, if a little burt and sore as a result. i didnt get to see half as many acts as i wnated to.

saw docotors were good my friends are fans
    kaiser chiefs were really good
    razorlight really disappointed me
got lost for about 3 housr and ended up outside the green room turn sounded really good, hal not so much
    kt tunstall was brillaint
was around for the frames but i wasnt really paying attention
green day were amazing, but what was with the crowd surfing, i was near the fence and all the guys around me were really tall so whent he crowd surfers came along i couldnt reach them and as a result two of them fell on top of me, but green day were soo good, been waiting for ages to see them

emm sunday saw beautiful south, played well crowd say along
feeder disappointed me, get over the fact that mtv was filming it for f***s sake
audioslave played really well, not a fan but was in the pit que
i really dont like the streets anyway and thought they were ****e
the killers, eeveryone got involved but the whole thing was lacking something
    keane were good
foos was brillaint but still with the crowd surfing but the crowd started to send them backwards after a while

    "the miming thing????"

    PLEASE EXPLAIN ???

i can assure you the kaiser cheifs did/do not mime their act but the drummer does a lot of the vocals as well as the "lead" singer perhaps thats where you are getting mixed up??

Also "follow the herd" wtf? as opposed to what? being one of the thousands of "individuals" in Audioslave (e.g) t shirts??.
yeah i know what you meant but each to his own eh?People were posting their opinions on bands theywent to see.

the Killers i didnt see so i cant comment on their performance,i do like the album but i have seen the singer interviewed several times & can safely say hes a cock

Did anyone see Kerbdog? If not you all missed out. Audioslave - Killing in the Name highlight of the wkend

  • Registered Users Posts: 513 ✭✭✭Cond0r

kaiser chiefs were really good but then the miming thing.. kind of ruins it
I actually thought they were miming too, but I think for me anyway, it was just the delay on the screens that made it look like they may have been.
    Poor show if they were.

QOTSA rocked in my opinion.. big fan though and I can see how non fans may not have enjoyed it that much.

As everyone has said, Greenday put on an awesome show and were generally good fun.

Prodigy I thought were awesome also, considering how long they've been around.. they really put on a great show and got the crowd going.

All in all, effing great weekend :)

There was no delay on the big screens... the speed of sound dictates the fact that the further away you are, the more out of sync the video will be with the audio - i.e. you're always seeing live video but the audio gets more and more delayed the further away you are.

    Highlights for me:

QOTSA: I'm not a massive fan of these and I hadn't seen them live before (with previous more exciting live lineups or whatever) but I really enjoyed these largely due to where I was in the crowd I suppose - and I prefer the actual "let's play our setlist" approach to a gig rather than Greenday's song-20mins of bollocks-song-20mins of bollocks-song style.

Biffy Clyro: Yerman's guitar tech really earned his keep over the course of the set, they were rocking. Must pick up some of their stuff now.

Fightstar: CHARLIEEEE!!!!!! CHARRRRLIEEEEEEEEEE!!!! Good fun. Bit pissed off that I had security dudes jumping all over me at the barrier during Palahniuk's Laughter though cause they were trying to stop a pit a few people back or something.

Audioslave: Seemed to play more RATM/Soundgarden than their own stuff but that was fine by me, would have liked the whole band playing Black Hole Sun and Shadow of the Sun / Drown Me Slowly / #1 Zero making an appearance instead of Doesn't Remind Me, I hate that song. The bottles thing was mad looking :)

Foo Fighters: Every song was an anthem, they're hardly a groundbreaking or original rock band in any way but they're a fúcking great band for a festival and produced more spine-tingling moments and equally more headbanging moments than any other band had for me, I can barely talk after screaming the entire set from the pit.

Razorlight, The Killers, The Streets, and Rodrigo y Gabriela (shameless crowd milkers... only outdone by Greenday in this department) all looked ****e to me. Did anyone notice Embrace had the gig of their lives in the Green Room on Sunday? I can't stand them myself but I caught the end of their set and they seemed genuinely overwhelmed by the reception they got after having low expectations, was nice to see such a good vibe.

After the halfway point in their set, Jimi Goodwin could see that security were not only screaming aggressively towards those on others' backs, they were sending in snatch squads. These squads would barrel through the crowd causing more hassle, bruising and physical contact than any amoun of five foot girls on their friend's back. All in all, security were acting way over the top at what was a relaxed and sunny outdoor gig with no mosh pit and no great crowding as far as I could see.

So after one song, Jimi looks down at the security below stage and asks something like "is it our gig or theirs". After the next song he berates them for being violent and says there is no need to act that way. Not sure that the crowd appreciated what he was getting at cos it would have looked like he was looking at his feet rather than the security people below him, and I think the crowd would have cheered massively if they had known!

Also going by newspaper reports, Cormac Battle of Kerbdog said something like "these guys are triple time to sit on their arses all day. Let's give them something to work at". Cue big mosh and security freaking out :D

MCD need to teach there security agents some manners and respect towards patrons. There is a need for robust security but as many other festivals and events demonstrate, it can be done without snarling, needless aggression and power-tripping.

I really enjoyed the Frames and the Foo Fighters on the main stage...
HAL and The Magic Numbers were very impressive and Josh Rouise was pretty good aswell..
I thought Kasabian were a bit stale so went to see Mylo in the dance tent and it was brilliant the best part of my weekend....
Alabama 3 really got the crowd going on Sunday...
The Streets, The Queens of the Stone Age were disappointing...

nobody seems to have mentioned tom vek, he was only for half an hour and his last song was fantastic.
i'm sorry i missed the goteam now. had to keep with the crowd. (.. go team) i always find at these festivals that if i want to see something strange i'm on me own.
black strobe were disappointing for me but they were on waaaay too early.
jacques lu cont rocked and the way he led into lcd soundsystem was class.
was funny seeing lcd soundsys clear out the dance tent only to fill it up again!
    kasabian were great.
highlight of the weekend for me was finishing on blue monday. always wanted to see new order and no amount of "you'll never see james brown again" would sway me!

Rodgab did it for me. They are truely sublime together. And that showdown, massive. Flogging Molly were the first band I saw. And what a way to start the festival.

I heard that someone went mental in campsite A on Friday night and slashed his wrists and chest....

...€140 euro to be taken away in an ambulance on Friday...bargain ticket!

I had a great time though.

Highlights: Kasabian, Eagles of Death Metal, Death from Above 1979.
    Disappointing:
The Killers (crap mix, teenyboppers everywhere -"oh i love this song, like you know?"),
Rodrego and Gabriella (its two mexicans playing classical spanish guitar...its not new, its not original...stop going mad over it you idiots)

First time camping, probably wont do it again due to ****ty food, ****ty queues, ****ty smell from portoloos and ****ty smell just in general (i.e. sunday morning = smell), and because of idiots everywhere

only 3 words to describe this fella, NOT FESTIVAL FIT

    Saturday:
Kaiser Chiefs - Very Good, pity I missed the first few songs though.
Razorlight - Nothing special, nothing awful.
QOTSA - Good, but not great.
Snoop Dogg - The surprise package for me... he really got the crowd going better than everyone else but Green Day.
The Frames - Nice guy...pity about the music.
Bloc Party - Great set altogether.
Kasabian - I only saw them briefly, but it was shaping up nicely before I ran back to Green Day.
Green Day - Amazing. No other word for it. Performance of Saturday for sure.

    Sunday:
The Streets - Yuck. Worst performance.
Rodriego Y Gabriela - Good. Very good.
Audioslave - Apart from the bottle throwing stunt, pretty crap.
LCD Soundsystem - Enjoyable enough - not as good as I expected though.
    New Order - Good/great.
James Brown - From what I saw, it was similar enough to his earlier Vicar Street performance and - yes - he is running out of energy...
Foo Fighters - Very good again :)
Susanne Vega - Ha, I went in about halfway through and happened to hear her best stuff. Lucky me.

That's it - good festival, won't be camping next year though - gonna be in New York :)!

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,945 ✭✭✭D-Generate

    Band Highlights were

Kerbdog - Great crowd with many friends and brilliant atmosphere. They also interacted well with the crowd

Jimmy Eat World - Lots of crowd singing and very good set with well known songs that would make anyone move.

Audioslave had a very good set also, especially the acoustic Black Hole Sun. Pretty classy!

Best set had to be New Order's though. Sumner is quite the funny man and its great to see 40 year olds belting out great tracks. Muchos dancing and muchos singing. Very good sounding also. What better crowd interaction than getting them to vote for their next song!?
Hopefully they will now come here alone rather than supporting some group whose fans won't care about seeing them, e.g RHCP fans at Landsdown Rd.

Highlight of the weekend for me was definitely audioslave, although there was a load of people just standing in the pit like they didnt want to be there. Bloc party, Kasabian and the kaiser chiefs were also great. really disappointed I didn't get to see the future kings of spain, the Go! team and interpol. Wasn't bothered with green day, not a fan, but after hearing the reviews I probably should have gone instead of the prodigy.

Biggest disappointment was bright eyes cancelling! Really pissed off at that.
