There are many different/better distortion pedals out there but it all depends on what you are playing. the Proco RAT series and EH Big Muff Series spring to mind immediately. But if you are playing Trash Metal they mightent be the perfect choice though you could indeed use them.

I have a Big Muff Pi. Very nice. Could use less fuzz and more hardness to the sound though. If you're looking for soft, bluesy tones it's gorgeous.

Err, the Big Muff is a fuzz pedal. It just happens to have a "normal" distorted element to it. If you want to get less fuzz and more hardness, buy an EQ pedal and raise the mids.

I use a Turbo RAT and Nobels ODR-1, as well as the models on my Microcube, and the dirty channel on my Drive amp. I'm getting a Fuzz Factory too, hopefully.

The Turbo RAT is great. It has a unique tone. If you have an EQ, you can use it for Metal, Fuzz, lots of different stuff.

For Trash Metal, I'd recommend the *original* Rat as that's what Metallica used on Kill 'em all. I'd recommend using it with an EQ pedal though, but if you've got a good enough EQ on your amp you should be fine, might want to use it on the distorted channel with a little gain too.

I've been using a Boss MT-2 MetalZone through my Mesa Boogie's clean channel over the last two days, and jesus christ I'm getting some brutal tones.

Using the drive channels on my valvestate vs102r, With the boogie v-twin in front of it for a gain and mid boost for solos

I'd lose the Zoom if at all possible. They're very very noisy and not particularly nice to your tone.

You'll always get a better distortion tone from the amp if it's any good. If you get a bad sound from overdriving the amp then it's a good indication of where your tone is going when you kick in a pedal. You should look at upgrading the amp before you start thinking about pedals, imo.

    Amen.

I strongly disagree. There are plenty of tones you get from pedals you'd never get from an amp. Pedals are cheap, and if you get a good one, you'll use it forever, and can carry it anywhere with you.

Has anyone noticed how Irish musicians don't seem to use or have many pedals, at all? I like Amp distortion too, but people really don't use decent effects anymore... it's all the same tones.

I know it looks bad on paper, but it's a great pedal that throws the amp into full on Death Metal mode when needs be. Sounds fantastic.

Have you tried it with the Mesa's drive channel?

And I agree, it's a VERY underrated pedal. But it only really shines when you use an Overdrive with it. May I suggest the TS-7?

I have, but it doesn't sound good at all, I get a lot of whine and feedback. The drive channel is my main "Rock" sound right now, so I don't really use that for anything else. But the Metalzone sounds fine for throwing the amp into sheer flaming Metal mode, so I don't think I want to stick anything else in the signal chain.

Seriously though, try an overdrive with it. Actually, have you tried putting the Metal Zone in the effects loop instead of in front of the amp, using some gain on the dirty channel to back it up?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

No, I've not tried that. Might indeed mess around with those ideas, but right now I've found what works for me.

mt-2 rocks imo..put a ge-7 after it and ear hospital here we come

I dont use distortion pedals, I just use my TSL and usually have a Ge-7 and a marshall ed-1 compressor on nearly all the time for that better tone and to drive the amp more at lower volumes.... :)

heres a clip of my tone...... i made it ages ago, but meh its good enough, it was recorded one of those old pc mics
