For Me it has to be G1,but probably because I was wankered from the Olympic and Sides before I got there.
Best thing about Club hopping was the fresh intake of pills on arrival.
Billy Scurry @G1,Dollard and Highland @ Sides and Warren @Asylum and Casper(I think) at the Multimedia
Still adding tunes to DamienS Ftp,/music/Old_School/Uploads/Antoin/
THK,Interplanet,FunkDory,Vinyl Blair to name a few.
Bumble West In Motion and Hardbag Ceasefire tomorrow only just figured out they were done by the same guy, will add them tomorrow

Commercial enterprise? It ticked all the boxes for a bloody good club to listen to the best of underground trance, techno and house. Had amazing women, pretty easy going on rules, tops off, buckets of good drugs, some of the best DJs, chill out room etc. That to me made a good club and I would have never considered it commercial... the System, that was commercial and the Kitchen to a lesser extent.

For this reason alone i would shoot the place down anyway......beauty of the ASYLUM as should be with any Rave was there was no rules, you were completly free to do whatever you wanted which allowed you to become completley lost in the experience without looking over your shoulder......temple of sound certainly was strict on drugs which was no use to me....like you said it was a club...... it was not a Rave;)

Sorry man i have to disagree, Sides was undoubtely the best ever club in the history of this country and will never be bettered.:)

I suppose everybody has a different idea of what was the best at the time......i personaly will never forget the absolute feeling of Ecsatsy & Energy along with the being totally lost in another world feeling of the bottom floor of the ASYLUM......as was only mentioned in a recent post what came the closest to this was downstairs in SIDES but not quite the same......no other Rave in my opinion will ever match it.

So many clubs to choose from in those days, we had no idea how lucky we were, especially if you consider that by 97 there was only really the Temple Theatre, the red box or small clubs like republica going none of which except maybe the temple had anything like the atmosphere or feel of their predecessors.

    Asylum
    Sides
    Olympic
    Temple of Sound
    Shaft
    System
    Waterfront
    POD

In that order of preference, after that it was never the same for me. Asylum will always be number one though, it was a place like no other!!

Just remembered a great tune from 1996 called Beautiful Imbalance - First Picture Of You.

Has anyone got this? Only thing I could find is from one of those scam mp3 websites so won't be buying it from here! Here's a clip to jog your memory:

    Dublin's best ever clubs IMO

1-Sides DC 1989-Till it closed - There will never be anywhere like Sides, simply the greatest club Ireland has ever seen,it simply was amazing, i went there religiously every week for years, the beauty of Sides was that it was primarily a Residents club with mostly Irish guests and only ocasionaly International guests, it was the perfect setting for a Rave and was just brilliant, i lived and died in that club!!!!!

2-The Ormond Multimedia Centre 1992-Till it closed - The Ormond comes a close second, i cant say ive ever had a bad nite there, ive even been fu**ed out for ;);) and went back in disguise and got back in:D that last ever nite there will live long in the memort as will hundreds of other nites.

3-The Temple Of Sound - 1993-1997 -Some amazing nites there with top class International and home grown DJ's over the years, went to the dogs when that poxy Club FM took over the place but beforehand it was deadly.

4-The Waterfront/Columbia Mills 1993-Till It Closed - FRANCOIS;)(story bud) sme fond memories of there and only 1 bad nite when i was stung by the garda with yokes the nite o the raid, cun*s but generally it was deadly.

5-The Asylum 1991-Till It Closed-I actually only went The Asylum about 10 times cos i used to just stay in Sides but on occasions when i dragged myself away i ventured down to Sackville Place and it was always mental, bit scary at forst but full on and atmosphere was deadly.

6-The Olympic Ballroom - 1991-1995- Piano and Euro House, tops off, smell of visks and olbas oil, the rush:D the olympic had it all, like The Asylum i only went there a handful of times because i was so obsessed with going to Sides all the time

7-The Red Box 1995-2000- Some legendary nites there even if the bouncers were cun*s and used to try and ask me for "a little payoff" as they knew what i was up to:eek:;)

7-The Kitchen - 1994-Till it closed - I had a "love - hate" relationship with the bouncers as they "knew";) me well but in general i had some amazing nites in the Kitchen, Genius the Techno nite on Tuesday was probably the most revered of them all, i must have went there every Tuesday for a year at one stage.

8-The Temple Theatre 1996-1999- Bouncers were absolute cun*s but in general the Temle was deadly, Eurodance there with David Holmes was by far and away the best ever nite there.

9-The Funnel -1996-Till it closed- Small club on the Quays near The Waterfront but some classic nites there, the atmosphere was always deadly, the size of the club though was it'sonly drawback it really was too small but all the same a classic club allbeit shortlived.

10-The Gardening Club-1990-Close - Only went there a handful of times but was brilliant but short lived from what i can remember.

Mentions also to System, POD,The Mint, G1, Shaft, Appie Annies, Tin Pan Alley and anywhere else ive forgotten.

    PLUR:)

The Olympic no. 6 jonny, very very harsh mate, was by far me own personal favourite (in its hayday) had everything, rockin atmpsophere, size, balcony, strobes, lasers..... man just one more night I tells ya, that's all I need:)

Another cracking spot was Club So, only there a few times mind you but was full on underground, toilets fallin off the walls and all.....

Was a regular for a long time in the Temple of Sound myself. Jesus, does this one bring me back. Remember it being blasted out by David Holmes one night and the place going ballistic.

Also remember one Saturday Russ Cox, from Sex Love & Motion in London played it. twice. He played the most ****ed up set I ever heard, really cut up the mixing, literally lifting records, but **** me did he know how to work the crowd. Felix, you may have been there yourself.

Don't remember Russ Cox off hand, was a regular guest there? I know there were plenty of one off or less frequent guests that I don't remember being there for as such, although I would have been most likely!

Jaysus slack painkiller really brings me back to the temple of sound, first time i heard in there ian mccready from sugar sweet belfast was playin around june 94,what a tune and what a sound system to hear it on.I reckin our paths crossed in there at some stage, your the the first person to mention slack to me since 94.Your routine before hand sounds very similiar to my own,a mate of mine had a flat on bacholors walk that we used to meet before hand and get warmed up in.Probably know your face are northside or southside?

Northside, originally from Coolock and would have been living there at the time. Wasn't a bloke called Ken by any chance from Bachelors Walk?

Shooting down a place for some rules I can't agree with. I remember hearing many a tale about stabbings, shooters, and scag bags happily banging up in the Asylum... I'm sure it was the minority, but still not something I would like happening around me when I 'm off my head and out for a good night. That said, I can appreciate where you are coming from in terms of a rave versus a club and that it was frustrating when the lights came on at 3am, but there was always a good party on somewhere so the night was never over, just a blip in proceedings :pac:

The Temple of Sound were not strict on drugs either, they were just careful as the license depended on it - any club at the time depended on people selling and doing drugs in order to survive... I personally knew most of the people selling in there and they were also known to both the bouncers and manager - other dealers came in from time to time and were less careful about their sales methods :pac: and either got thrown out or pushed out by the locals.

Re posers, there were definitely some there alright but it didn't bother me in the slightest, good looking women posers were eye candy and more if you wanted and generally most were so off their heads by 12am that it didn't matter a sh*te who you were or what you were wearing.

At the end of the day, you could debate all day where was better etc etc etc but it obviously differed from one person to the next based on their own experiences. As I said earlier, for me the Temple of Sound was playing the very best tunes from some of the best DJs of the time... I never had an issue getting in, getting drugs, or just dancing off my head for hours on end to the best in techno etc at the time. ;)

In saying all of that, I was never in there when Club FM took over and heard it went to sh*te then alright... which I would expect.

I know No.6. I still cant decide which was better the Olympic or The Asylum.
    Two completley different clubs/atmospheres.
The Olympic with its huge dance floor surrounded by a balcony with a big lazer set up over the DJ, this place was the original rave set up with the happy atmosphere and uplifting house and piano anthems, you could smell the olbais oil and vicks from the front door.
Remember qing outside at the start of the night waiting to get in and listeneing to the echo of the music coming from the big empty hall.............

Then the Asylum with its three floors and the bottom one was split into two seperate rooms. This was a mad place. The large dance floor downstairs was where it was happening for me, in front of the DJ Box next to the wall of ear piercing speakers, under the red lazers. There was a stair core beside there where you could go on a mission and end up in all sorts of places:D
Sides would be my number 3, it was a great spot two with the two levels. I never got into the Sides buzz, should have more than I did but at least I can say I was there. One memory that sticks out in my head about sides was upstairs they had white sheets or material covering large sections of the ceiling with those neon lamps under them that would flash on and off with the bass in a track, graet effect it was, does anyone remember?

    Ormond No.4
    Tin Pan Alley No.5
    Waterfront/ Columbia Mills No.6
    The Blue Banana No.10:D:D

Ye that sh.it did go on alright but not on the main dancefloor....few ropey corners in the skag room & upsatirs on the back stairs but sure as long as it wasnt going on on the main dancefloor i didnt really give a sh.it......you do your thing & i'll do mine was the way i looked at it......you didnt want to walk in to the back stairs in the middle of proceedings though some dodgy looks & heads to greet you:eek:

Was in the girls toilet at the back of the dance floor one night and this bloke was having a turn on in front of me, weird thing was that he was well spoken and dressed well, still a scumbag in my book. Needless to say I got well away from him. The girls toilet was as bad as the third floor in there for that lark.
Seen these blokes dancing in the fire escape stairs on the third floor one night. One had a monkey hat pulled down over his face with a pair of shades on, he was just after smokin gear and there was no music on the third floor that night yet he was giving it loads:eek:
I walked in on this, got outa there, weirdos

I suppose that was the trouble with how places got a name for themselves unless you went there or spent enough time in them. To me at the time from what I had heard about the Asylum, it sounded like somewhere I didn't need to check out given the fun I was having elsewhere.

I remember also blokes I knew who had only been going to the Ormond Multimedia and they hated the ToS the first time they went, they ended up going back then a few times to see other guest DJs and couldn't get enough of the place then. I can see how the bouncers may have seemed like c*nts alright if you weren't a regular, it was one of those places that you needed to be known to them to a degree, at least for them to be somewhat civil that is!

The first time I was in the UFO I wasn't mad on it (sorry Francois :pac: ) but after a couple more visits it was a tough choice some weeks as to where I went, but ended up a lot of the time going to both the UFO and the Temple of Sound.

Another chill out spot for me was sitting ON the speakers in the Asylum, remember the speakers at the bottom of the stairs in front of the cool pop bar, or the ones against right hand side of the wall on the dance floor facing the Arches, only thing is your head would be hitting the ceiling, oh yeah and dont stick your finger into the smoke machine beside these speakers, it does hurt:D

Handy little link I picked up on NIoldskool for getting MP3 from youtube. works quite quickly as an example I used Vigo - to be house 9.14 minutes it too 4.5mins to convert. Downside is the bit rate is only 64kb grand for listening to but wouldn't be using it to mix. Anyway link details below.

www.listentoyoutube.com << just paste the url of the video and press go it will convert it 2 mp3 and give u a download link!!

As for the asylum, yeah there was gear in there and some mad goings on but to tell you the truth I never felt threatened in any way in that place. I felt a lot safer than I did in a lot of so called clubs before and after and as was pointed out to me a few times you've got a very ****ing posh accent to be in here :pac: may have been the drugs or the music but I think really it was the atmosphere of the place that made it feel like the safest place on the planet when you were in there. Remember one night sitting in the girls toilets up on the sinks for about 2 hours off my tits welcoming everyone who came through the door to my party and things being the way they were in that place most people fed into it and just went along no grumpy heads like these days, could imagine doing that now and getting a dig in the head....

and that would be from the girls!!
