Was in The Wicked Wolf in Blackrock one night and thought I was going into the toilet and ended up in a stores, grabbed all I could and as I turned around a lounge boy was staring at me, 'OK sorry' I said and put them back, 'I'll leave the pub now just dont make a show of me in front of my work friends upstairs'. I wont he said but when I went back upstairs it was vamos time with a string of bouncers around him:mad:
A mate of mine whent walk about upstairs in a pub, the one down from the Asylum on the corner. He was a swine for this lark. He would always come back with spot prizes as in a jacket or two, then to be stopped by the Garda and asked 'Where did you get them coats' !!

    Sorry, forgot about work restrictions!

The first track is 'Painkiller' by Slack on Sabres of Paradise label.... cracking tune. The other is a tongue in cheek to my 'those were the days' reference... Mary Hopkins 'Those Were the Days my Friend' :D

LOL, did the same thing with the Buckfast... used to stash a couple of bottles in the brown bag up around Mary St somewhere and collect them after. Nothing like the warm, thick fruity flavour after hopping around off your head for hours... Generally drank about a half bottle or so before hand and maybe one speed bomb, great combination. I found the perfect cocktail and ideal night then to be..

    1. Start with bottle of Buckfast in one of the lads flat in town
    2. Couple of dabs/lines of speed to accompany (cats p*ss, snow coke etc)
    3. Drop a dove on the way across town, generally into Supermacs on O'Connel St to buy a coke to wash down, in case it feckin lodged in your throat
    4. Queue for the Temple of Sound (that was my regular along with the UFO, I was addicted to both places)
    5. Order a either a pint or whiskey once in and sit in the lounge buzzing away and chain smoking
    6. Hit the dancefloor once the first pill hits. Generally something like this tune dragged me out of my seat...

Ron Trent - Altered States (South Side Terrace Mix) - this mix fcked with my head the most when coming up or off you head

    7. Drop another about an hour or so later.
    8. Speed bomb just to elevate things a bit.
    9. Another whiskey for a bit more un-needed central heating
    10. Another dove maybe around 2am or so
    11. Drop an acid then shortly before you leave, probably a Bart Simpson, Red Eye or old reliable DD Strawberries.
    12. Collect stashed Buckfast or buy cider off your man at the paper stand
    13. Head to whatever party going... off somewhere you have never been in your life before
    14. Continue necking whatever comes your way accompanied later in the morning by spliffs and sometimes a cup of hot chocolate :D (I remember one party in the Wicklow mountains and the bloke who owned the house made a big fck off saucepan of hot chocolate at about 9am the next morning... we were all sitting outside in his garden having a few spliffs, drinking the hot choc and listening to the Orb)
    15. Start snapping out of things by around afternoon and then trying to establish where the fck you are and how are you going to get home, or to an early house if its still early.
    16. Eventually get home on a Sunday night barely able to speak or function.. face work the next day which was fckin horrific
    17. Repeat the following weekend :D

Its mad how those nights went and the crazy amount of drugs consumed, I wonder sometimes how the fck we survived those nights and years. Great times though and don't regret any of it, no matter how fcked up and crazy it got at times.

Grow up so fast though with so much sh*t along the way. I have to almost pinch myself at times when I think now I'm married with two kids and a regular job to pay the bills. A spliff is about as much as I have nowadays and even that is becoming a struggle at times...

Excellent stuff there mate, you hit the nail well on the head there MD 20/20 Kiwi/Strawberry flavour was me own tipple of choice....

Some tune that "Painkiller" track, you'r right brings me right back to the Temple of sound. Used to fcukin love that club, was in there from the second weekend of opening and pretty much most Fridays and Saturdays right up till they started turning all regulars away. Our paths must have crossed i would imagine at some stage...

That's the mad thing about it, I used to do that every weekend for years, as did all my mates, and held done a regular job all the way through.

It makes you laugh when you hear about Pop/Rock stars moaning about their "drug & alcohol binge hell"

Fuk that! At lease you didn't have to face a nine to five on a Monday morning buddy!!!

Fckin sure, I had to go straight to work many a time after a party... used to work in HMV at the time and had to go in for work at 12 on a Sunday many a time, feckin torture!

Remember downing the traditional small carton of milk purchased from the shop opposite the Kevin Street bus stop on the way to the Olympic to stop me from havin a 'Ralf' with the exitment. Your man in the shop done a roaring trade from the 77 bus with skins, Johnny Blue, 'Milk', chewing gum, cans of coke. He should have stocked olbais oil and vicks too if he knew what was good for him

I would be talking to the shutters at that stage pinning for a couple of scoops, reality check was on the way:eek:
I used to work in a pub as a nipper and bottles of Carslberg 'Elephant Brew' would be relieved from the premises by yours truly. The stuff was 8%

Yeah I'd say a book could be written pretty easily from just a couple of peoples experiences... :D Forgot about that aspect in my list actually, the skins, chewing gum and smokes! I remember one morning in a garage having the brainwave to get a jam doughnut along with a coffee, it was like eating a lump of soggy cardboard and took about 20 minutes to chew one bit before I gave up :D

Yeah I was there from about early 94 to late 96, I had pretty much stopped going when Club FM came along and fcked it all up. Probably did cross paths, twas a small enough crowd there.

Commercial enterprise? It ticked all the boxes for a bloody good club to listen to the best of underground trance, techno and house. Had amazing women, pretty easy going on rules, tops off, buckets of good drugs, some of the best DJs, chill out room etc. That to me made a good club and I would have never considered it commercial... the System, that was commercial and the Kitchen to a lesser extent.

    Thanks for the memories lads.
The sky box broke a few weeks back and I got sucked into this thread when I googled a tape I lost years back. fairplay to you all - great to see the music still means as much to others as it did to me at the time.

Malcom X's and the Celtic tiger retired me but feel a mid life crisis on the way !

Only got to the Asylum once, 1st yoke/rave(15yr)- nite yer man was shot! 1st thing I remember about that night was the smell of vicks/olbas oil when I turned down sackville from OC St. wot a nite -

never got to sides but was reg. at UFO, OMMC and later Temple Sound/Theatre

Thanks to whomever put up Mo_Tune_-_Infinite_Climax - tapped this off a station after anite out way back when and never got a name to it - love that tune - thanks.

Also thanks to whom ever posted Ed Case Magic R'About - missed that nite as I was else where...mate said it was one of the best he was at, and I can see why...listening to it now...deadly, yeah c'mon....

Haven’t much to contribute by the way of tunes, most of it is up already, all the records long gone but will rummage around as you never now wot mite turn up
    Cheers lads...keep it up.

Another amazing track from certainly the Temple of Sound anyway, Justin Robertson if memory serves me....

This really sends shivers through me, could nearly bring a feckin tear to the eye it brings me back so much... could be off my head, 19 years old with not a care in the world, vicks, olbas oil, whiskey, buckfast, birds, trips... jaysus they really were the days - as that song goes 'Those were the days my friend, we thought they'd never end' :pac:
    QUOTE]

Was a regular for a long time in the Temple of Sound myself. Jesus, does this one bring me back. Remember it being blasted out by David Holmes one night and the place going ballistic.

Also remember one Saturday Russ Cox, from Sex Love & Motion in London played it. twice. He played the most ****ed up set I ever heard, really cut up the mixing, literally lifting records, but **** me did he know how to work the crowd. Felix, you may have been there yourself.

you could not be further from the truth mate, The Temple Of Sound was a legendary club and staged some of the best ever nites Dublin has ever seen(not as good as Sides though);)

    Dublin's best ever clubs IMO

1-Sides DC 1989-Till it closed - There will never be anywhere like Sides, simply the greatest club Ireland has ever seen,it simply was amazing, i went there religiously every week for years, the beauty of Sides was that it was primarily a Residents club with mostly Irish guests and only ocasionaly International guests, it was the perfect setting for a Rave and was just brilliant, i lived and died in that club!!!!!

2-The Ormond Multimedia Centre 1992-Till it closed - The Ormond comes a close second, i cant say ive ever had a bad nite there, ive even been fu**ed out for ;);) and went back in disguise and got back in:D that last ever nite there will live long in the memort as will hundreds of other nites.

3-The Temple Of Sound - 1993-1997 -Some amazing nites there with top class International and home grown DJ's over the years, went to the dogs when that poxy Club FM took over the place but beforehand it was deadly.

4-The Waterfront/Columbia Mills 1993-Till It Closed - FRANCOIS;)(story bud) sme fond memories of there and only 1 bad nite when i was stung by the garda with yokes the nite o the raid, cun*s but generally it was deadly.

5-The Asylum 1991-Till It Closed-I actually only went The Asylum about 10 times cos i used to just stay in Sides but on occasions when i dragged myself away i ventured down to Sackville Place and it was always mental, bit scary at forst but full on and atmosphere was deadly.

6-The Olympic Ballroom - 1991-1995- Piano and Euro House, tops off, smell of visks and olbas oil, the rush:D the olympic had it all, like The Asylum i only went there a handful of times because i was so obsessed with going to Sides all the time

7-The Red Box 1995-2000- Some legendary nites there even if the bouncers were cun*s and used to try and ask me for "a little payoff" as they knew what i was up to:eek:;)

7-The Kitchen - 1994-Till it closed - I had a "love - hate" relationship with the bouncers as they "knew";) me well but in general i had some amazing nites in the Kitchen, Genius the Techno nite on Tuesday was probably the most revered of them all, i must have went there every Tuesday for a year at one stage.

8-The Temple Theatre 1996-1999- Bouncers were absolute cun*s but in general the Temle was deadly, Eurodance there with David Holmes was by far and away the best ever nite there.

9-The Funnel -1996-Till it closed- Small club on the Quays near The Waterfront but some classic nites there, the atmosphere was always deadly, the size of the club though was it'sonly drawback it really was too small but all the same a classic club allbeit shortlived.

10-The Gardening Club-1990-Close - Only went there a handful of times but was brilliant but short lived from what i can remember.

Mentions also to System, POD,The Mint, G1, Shaft, Appie Annies, Tin Pan Alley and anywhere else ive forgotten.

    PLUR:)

Topper of a link niall, I love the bit when he says ' PRO-duction becomes RE-Duction"....been there hundreds of times. ;) - Nothing beats a simple sequencer and a dollop of 'what if'.......
1# Warren would say - 'Hold on Caf, is that loop 2bits short of a full bar.
2# Walsh would say - That's a 'GigaWobble,... MOFO' - (I never actually found out what that was  as it's just 1 of the very many "Funky' ones Mick coughed up during an NR:Gex session)
3# Caf would Say - From the top ..... (anyone for tea ?)
    Anyhow.... I still love the full set-up in a studio, Gimme CuBase anyday, 25 years old and still rockin' . ( http://www.steinberg.net/en/products/musicproduction/cubase4_product.html ) - (That's a harmless plug folks...ok ;) )

And a first for the asylum/oldskool thread...

Jaysus slack painkiller really brings me back to the temple of sound, first time i heard in there ian mccready from sugar sweet belfast was playin around june 94,what a tune and what a sound system to hear it on.I reckin our paths crossed in there at some stage, your the the first person to mention slack to me since 94.Your routine before hand sounds very similiar to my own,a mate of mine had a flat on bacholors walk that we used to meet before hand and get warmed up in.Probably know your face are northside or southside?

    PLUR:)

Cant believe the asylum only makes it to no5 on ur list ....its NO1. I loved the olympic and sides but it has to be the asylum for me was there each and every week until the shooting which i was on the 3rd floor that night .. back to ernies flat then with all the blanch crew!!!!!!!!!

Reason i didn't include the Mansion House is that it wasn't a regular club.they had only 1 off nites there.;)
