Looking at this myself might purchase, what would an 32" LCD normally cost??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,632 ✭✭✭✭okidoki987

    A Sony 32" LCD is 2,400 Euro!

The one thing I didn't like about the ALDI one was 12 mini screens but only "live", all the rest are static.

jammer, thansk for the tip, do you mind me asking where you heard this?
could only find reviews for this model in the southern hemisphere has it been available in stores before?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,891 ✭✭✭Jammer

Go into PC World (only shop im 100% sure has one) and drool on it. Its at the back of the shop. Dixons/Currys get ALL their stock from the UK, so it could be available to UK.

But yes, currys have been selling it for 1499 with a dvd recorder all week.

Were they on a VGA splitter?

When places demo TV/Monitors they split them from 1 PC/Feed and you get either a red/green/blue feed.

can't say how they were connected, all the colours were there but this
blue tint donimnated , very cold image lacking in red/yellow all LCD's had this

thanks jammer, is this out in blanch that you saw them?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,891 ✭✭✭Jammer

yep. If there's none in stock, ask them to order from galway/limerick as they wont sell through theirs as quick, usualy. They wont be getting them back in AFAIK, so they will sell display model. Push for the full 10% off if you take it! ;)

    Oh dear.

I got one this morning. Haven't had a chance to try it out yet though. I got over a little after nine and they were just selling the last of them. I thought I'd chance my arm and ask one of the people bringing stock out from the storeroom if they'd be getting any more in and they said I thought they saw another pallet back there. So I ended up being able to get one.

I reckon there were 12 sets in total in that branch. All gone within minutes of opening.

I did take a quick look inside the box, I was very impressed that they give you all the cables you could possibly need, even a DVi cable. Oh and batteries were included.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 108 ✭✭OhPinchy

dammit thanks to a few too many after the match last night I didn't make it over to Aldi in Tallaght till 9.45 and they were all gone  the lad said they had about 30 in total.

whats the story - were there people queuing up outside and what time would they have been there since?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,216 ✭✭✭✭monkeyfudge

I don't know about Tallaght. But it wasn't too bad in Coolock. 8 people had been queing up before opening and they all got the sets, another guy who was queuing got one of the extra sets with me. The 2 other sets from the last pallet went at the same time too.

I don't have much experience in these things. But I would imagine that at 30 sets to that store you might have got lucky like me going in just after nine.

They issue tickets to the people who have queued up outside the door.

Those bench drills looked like the most popular item though. I seen people walking out with 2 and 3 of them.

Not this time for me unfortunately, but for future reference, do they accept orders for these like they do with computers?

    Really? That's bad.

Let us know how you get on. I'd like to know what the service is like.

Hopefully mine works. I'll be running home at lunch time to check it out.

I picked one up this morning at Aldi in Parnell Street; arrived about five to nine, and there were around 40 people ahead of me (!) - I assumed they were all there for the LCD, so I was bit dismayed; however, most of them seemed to be picking up cheap power mitre saws!

There were six people in the queue with numbers for an LCD screen, and I got the seventh one (no number) - I asked the sales guy how many they had altogether and he reckoned about 20. He also said they had just placed an order for more. So worth checking for anyone looking for one.

Base2, the card in my box included an Irish freephone number for customer service, 1-800-992-508 and when I tried it just now, it answered. However, if the screen is DOA, Aldi should take it back with no hassle (getting a replacement might be trickier of course.)

Anyway, what's it like? I've spent the last 30 mins playing with it, so here's a mini review.

In short: it's excellent! No dead pixels so far (I thought I saw one, but it turned out to be a speck of dust). I have a 36" top-end Sony already, and the main thing that attracted me to the Tevion was the dual tuners and similar feature set (and the price, obviously).

In fact, most of the features are implemented *better* than on the Sony. The user interface is pretty slick, with sliding menus, fade-ins, etc. There are some nice features I haven't seen before (e.g. three-page teletext - one big page, and two small pages showing the 'next page' links for the yellow and blue buttons respectively).

The "12-screen" display uses both tuners well - you move around the 12 mini screens using the arrow keys, and as you move to each one, it becomes live (with audio); meanwhile, the second tuner continues to update the other 11 screens in the background, at the rate of one screen per second. This is much easier to use than Sony's version, where you had to choose which of the 12 you wanted to watch, and it then displayed mid-size in the centre; moving to a different channel was a lot more effort.

(Someone was disappointed it didn't show all 12 live at once; to do this, you'd need 12 tuners, which would cost a fortune; the way they have done it is really almost as good.)

I connected a PC at 1366 x 768. I was only using Analogue VGA, so I had to do a tiny bit of manual adjustment in the menus to get the picture centred correctly; the display auto-adjusts to whatever resolution you give it, but obviously it works better if you give it a native resolution display. The PC picture was slightly murky (as if it wasn't scaled quite right; I did try several resolutions, and this was the best); going to native DVI should improve it.

Overall picture quality looks pretty good to me; certainly watchable. I haven't fed NTL digital into it yet, but I'd expect it to be very clean, based on the PC input.

It also includes four games, including Tetris! (The others are Snake, Scramble and Outer Space). Pretty low resolution graphics, but since I wasn't expecting them at all, can't really complain :-)

    What I liked:
    - Nice menus, PiP box zooms in from the corner, and slides around rather than just jumping, when you reposition it
    - Includes reasonable number of cables (including both SCART and SCART adapter); strangely, the TV fly lead is a male/female rather than male/male, as if they expect you to be plugging your VCR in rather than your wall socket, but everyone will have the normal lead handy anyway.
    - Excellent feature set
    - Decent remote control, with well-positioned buttons
    - Good teletext (fast too); multi-display is great

    Things that could be improved:
    - No discrete audio L/R outputs for an external amp (it looks like it will be possible to get "current picture" audio from AV/2, but I haven't confirmed this yet.)
    - No side-by-side PiP view (i.e. one picture is always big, the other small; you can't have two similarly sized pictures size-by-side, so the small picture always covers a portion of the big picture)
    - So far, I haven't got PiP view to work in PC mode. I think this is because the PC is running at 60 Hz and the TV signal at 50 Hz; I'll probably need to use Powerstrip to get the graphics card down to 50, which I think will fix it.
    - It does the annoying thing where pressing '1' or '2' on the remote assumes you are entering a two-digit channel number, so it waits a second to see if you're going to press another key before changing channels; I hate this, but at least it only seems to do it when there is a channel defined in the range 10-19 or 20-29, so in principle if I stick to nine analogue channels, it won't be a hassle.

I originally bought this thinking it would do nicely for the bedroom, but it may now end up supplanting my Sony.

Definitely recommended - at the price, it's a steal!

Apparently they will re-order for you. I was talking to the manager dude in Aldi Newlands cross...

Having mine shipped back to England for a replacement. Ahh the hassle. Really wanted to get it going today.

But one thing, why did they design the thing so ugly?

are you even getting a blue screen ? or no display at all ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,216 ✭✭✭✭monkeyfudge

I had a quick check of my one over my lunch break.

It seems to be working fine and has no dead pixels.

I was only able to test it out on my PC. It doesn't seem to catch the aspect ratio of a DVD properly. I'll have to mess around a bit with it this evening.

And it's not that ugly... just imagine it with a 'Sony' badge on there instead of a 'Tevion' one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 648 ✭✭✭Tenshot

One another slight annoyance I missed: there are the usual selection of 4:3, 16:9 panorama, 16:9 zoom, "auto-fit", etc for picture stretching, but there is no 14:9 mode - I used to use this almost all the time for analogue channels, since it doesn't distort 4:3 channels the way the other modes do. However, most stuff I watch now is widescreen anyway, so not a big deal.

Base2, this will sound really obvious (for which I apologise in advance), but: you did check the mains power switch, right? It's not that obvious, since it's on the underside of the connectors panel around the back (just underneath where the kettle lead plugs in).

Mokeyfudge, if you're playing the DVDs via your PC, you may need to tell your player software to play at 1:1 aspect ratio (or maybe NOT at 1:1), since it's probably expecting a differently shaped screen and maybe trying to compensate...

I didn't have much time to look at mine. But the aspect button wasn't immediately apparent to me. Is it a button on the remote, or is it under a menu?

Is it 100% certain this is ntsc compatible? This would be the clincher for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 220 ✭✭pauld

what is the sound output like? already have a beko 15" , the sounds is akin to an old transistor radio - very "thinny" (my best attempt at describing the sound output)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 108 ✭✭OhPinchy

MainShane - I'm pretty sure this thread on avforums confirmed that it is NTSC compatible:

    http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=213625

when you say 'this would be a clincher for me' it sounds like you have an option to buy one - they were all sold out round my way in tallaght by 9.30am - dont suppose you happen to know of somewhere I can get my hands on one?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5 MainShane

OhPinchy -- No, I suppose it will be keeping fingers crossed hoping the ALDI near me gets more in.

Does anyone know of a site that actually states the NTSC spec, or can anyone who got their hands on one confirm this from the manual?

hurahh! Went back to Aldi and they stil had some here in Galway so got a quick replacement. No questions asked, no forms to sign. Happy as can be with my shiny new tv. And best of all the Tevion badge comes off so knowbody will know I'm an Aldi whore.

According to the manual...it's Multi-standard PAL, SECAM & NTSC.

Base2 - how easy does the badge come off and does it leave a mark? I think the badge is a bit big and would look a lot cleaner without it.

Think Lidi tv is a 30inch.Those extra two inches could make all the difference :D .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 648 ✭✭✭Tenshot

The LIDL TV is 30", and only has a single tuner, not dual. (Still excellent value at €999, mind.)

The Tevion aspect ratio can be changed via the Picture menu, or also directly from the remote using the ARC (Adjust Ratio Control, I presume) button, which cycles between AUTO (based on input picture), 4:3, PANORAMA (non-linear scaling of 4:3 to 16:9 so centre remains undistorted), CINEMA (stretches 2.35:1 back to 16:9 to remove black bars at top & bottom), and WIDE PICTURE (anomorphic wide screen).

The sound quality is actually pretty decent: apparently there are six speakers buried inside the case. It looks like it should be crap, but sounded not bad at all when I watched an episode of the West Wing just now.

Re NTSC, the Features list in the manual on Page 5 says "Mutli-standard PAL, SECAM, and NTSC", and one of the picture menus describes a "Tint" option, with the comment that it only applies to NTSC sources. So, should be covered on that score.

Out of curiosity, can any of you new Tevion owners tell me...

What type of wall mount does it take? Vesa compatible?

Do the speakers detach, so only the screen is wall mounted?

    :o Hi all,
has anybody seen a pink tint on the aldi screen? I bought mine
yesterday and unpacked it last night. Watched GMTV this morning
and the presenters has a pinkish glow, tried all the backlight, brightness,
contract and colour settings but its still there. I know theres a tint
option but that only for NTSC. I wonder if it could be the scart cable
as I've got sky -> video -> lcd scart setup ?

Try going directly from the sky with a scart cable if it's still there then eliminate the cable and try again.

that the flat TV one was 'nicer'!!
    cheers mate!!
