URC Match week 1 thread

    The URC is BACK!

Well it is back in 6 days, but opening this early to get some build up to the competition returning.

Defending champions Leinster start the new season in the unusual position (for them) of a South African tour first up. There Lions won't be available but they will be hoping that the Irish contingent will be there or else their hopes of bringing any points back will be very slim indeed. Leinster will be boosted by the lack of Springbok availability for the Stormers though many of their players will be raring to go after Currie Cup playing time.

Munster kick off the Clayton McMillan era away to the embattled Scarlets, who have not managed to come away victorious against Munster since 2019. McMillan will be hopeful of a strong start to his tenure but Munster will miss their Lions star Beirne and recently retired stalwarts Murray and O'Mahoney.

Having missed the URC playoffs for the first time last season, the time for Richie Murphy to start showing he can turn things around in Ulster is very much now or never. At home to the Dragons is about as easy a start as they can hope for, but despite the excellent addition of Augustus the squad looks slightly threadbare.

Connacht can make an early statement at home against Benetton, who were agonisingly close to a playoff spot last year and will rue some dropped points - most notably only getting 1 LBP. They can not afford blowout losses. How quickly can Lancaster make an impact and will a move to his traditional ball playing style take time to bed in.

Outside of the Irish provinces the pick of the matches is probably the Ospreys away to the Bulls, with the Welsh team hoping to take advantage of the missing internationals. Hopefully the cloud hanging over Welsh rugby's future does not permeate into the performances of the teams on the pitch.

Mod note: If anyone wishes to open individual match threads they can (no match this week strikes me as deserving of one but have at it).

I’m very weary of posting Premier’s schedule now too far away from time, because they change it so much. However, this is what it looks like for the present.

    Week 1

    Friday

    6pm Stormers v Leinster TG4 Prem 1 URC.TV

    8:05pm Ulster v Dragons Prem 1 URC.TV

    Glasgow v Sharks Prem 2 URC.TV

    Saturday

    1pm Bulls v Ospreys Prem 2 URC.TV

    3pm Zebre v Edinburgh Prem 2 URC.TV

    5:30pm Scarlets v Munster Prem 1

    7:45pm Cardiff v Lions S4C Prem 2 URC.TV

    Connacht v Treviso TG4 Prem 1 URC.TV

PS Munster’s game being the Premier “exclusive” is just a process of deduction; it’s either Leinster or Munster each week, and it’s not Leinster.

Thanks for that, someone at work had told me the Munster game was only on S4C and hour after the game ended. Good to see we can watch it live

S4C will be showing that one delayed alright.

(Edit: not just hours delayed either. It won’t be shown till Sunday at 4:25pm)

    1. Stormers +7 vs Leinster
    2. Ulster -15 vs Dragons
    3. Scarlets +5 vs Munster
    4. Connacht -7 vs Benetton

Well those odds for the Stormers game make absolutely zero sense.

seems like easy money…. But Leinster will probably win 😝 Bookies never too far wrong.

I dont think Leinster have anything to worry about if they are playing the Stormers side who are really the WP Currie Cup team until the SA players are back.

    Same for Glasgow vs Sharks.

Cardiff coach (Matt Sherratt) departs with immediate effect to take up a role with the national team

20 minute red cards this season. Not a fan to be honest.

Just signed up on URC.tv for the games - €40 for the season with the "exclusive" game stream being delayed by 1 hour but all other games available to stream live. Good value for me as I dont have sky - no real interest in soccer.

It’s a very good price point now. Very little value if you’ve already got Premier mind, but if you don’t then it’s very reasonably priced for what you get.

I didn't know that, I'm not as against it as some are but I thought it was a dead duck already.

For this weekend the Leinster and Connacht games are on TG4and Premier and the rest just on Premier. So are all the games bar 1 "exclusive" game available on URC.tv?

Does TG4 tend to have the games online for replay after the fact, or are they just live?

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,533 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

Yes, all games apart from one exclusive game (which according to Ryle Nugent, will always involve either Leinster or Munster) will be available on URC.TV. Not sure if that means Premier get both Leinster v Munster and Munster v Leinster exclusively though. They will have six of the twelve derbies exclusively.

The exclusive game will be available on URC.TV on delay one hour after full time.

They did before. Not sure if that’s still the case in the new deal. TG4 do have a +1 and +2 feed on their player as well.

    And we're off!

Not a great crowd for the URC kick-off…

Penalty for Leinster on the first scrum. Great to see with that front row (though it was entirely Slimani)

Can't decide what I Think of the Leinster jersey.

South Africa is the home of the small crowds sure

Leinster seem to have given to on the yellow shorts for some reason 🤪

    Superb from Prendergast.

Sigh. McGrath absolutely destroying a scoring opportunity and lucky the Stormers don't score on the breakaway. Sooner Gunne gets ahead of him the better.

Ah, they have massively over-sized stadiums so even big crowds look poor. Hard to tell how big it actually is but doesn't seem great.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,089 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

Prendergast is kicking very well from open play so far.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 36,210 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

Some awful handling and Sam is back playing touch rugby.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,089 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

Both sides very poor so far. Leinster with no real platform. Forwards haven't gotten to grips with the game yet.

Bit early for a POTM award!

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 36,210 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

Two balls lost to locks' fat arses already

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,089 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

Prendergast and Leinster are targeting the Stormers 14 under the high ball. Working well so far.

But our lineout is a shambles.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,591 ✭✭✭ironingbored

    Shocking stuff from Leinster.

    They're lucky Stormers can't pass.

All from a stupid penalty from baird

Leinster doing everything they can to gift Stormers the game. Lineout is a mess.

Can't use it as an attacking weapon and can't use it as a way to relieve pressure.
