So vote in your local elections. If we have a council of gavin peppers there'll be no more pride month or flags, but we don't now so you'll have to put up with it.

Meanwhile it's illegal to cover public property in flags.

I will allow for flags for the next 2 hours or so by the way. Cmon Ireland!

We're playing Hungary now in football, move there, they banned Pride!

People annoyed by these flags should realise it is just a fad. Most of the people putting these up for territorial reasons do not have the persistence or work ethic to keep this going. A few winter storms will tear down most of these cheap flags.

The best way to motivate these individuals to keep putting up flags is to try to take them down.

Which bit of Leitrim isn't rural?

We don't live in the US. Flags only come out for special occasions. It used to be that if tricolours were flying everywhere, there was an event or something to celebrate. Just sticking them up all the time makes them meaningless.

I saw a cheap, faded nylon tricolour drooping off a post on the way past the Clayton hotel today, and the pride was overpowering. Very classy.

Why does 'flying the flag' work so well?

Because it leads people into a corner where they make statements like "there's no such thing as indigenous Irish people".

Doesn't count. He's Irish and getting offended on behalf of others - none of whom appear to be offended themselves.

No doubt the people hanging the flags are mostly uneducated racist scumbags, and their intentions are to alienate immigrants. But they're too thick to see that immigrants don't generally view the Irish flag as being even slightly offensive or exclusionary.

A classic example of trying to import UK-style racism into Ireland. If Irish racists love the UK so much (and all the indications are that they really do), then why don't they piss off over there?

The people who are saying take down the tricolours are the same people who have no problem with Palestinian, Ukrainian and LGBT flags flying everywhere. It’s only an issue when it’s the flag of their own country.

    Funny that.

    To recap:

    1. The National Flag is not yours, it's everyone's. It stands for Unity among all peoples on the Island of Ireland and is a visual symbol of the Nation's stated promise to protect the rights and welfare of ALL of its citizens including non-nationals deemed to be eligible for support. It follows that respect for the flag is respect for the State and its laws and institutions first. The stuff about history, culture, identity, heritage etc is a whole other kettle of fish.
    2. The National Flag takes primacy over all other flags. Even the EU flag takes a back seat to it; The National Flag MUST be flown higher and take a more visual prominence if flown beside any other. It is not treated the same as a Pride flag or a Ukranian flag and it is not to be subject of whataboutery.
    3. You can do whatever you like with the National Flag on your own property. However, the lamp posts belong to DCC and the right to display ANYTHING on their property requires their consent.
    4. It is simply impossible for the National Flag to cause offence. The agenda to make it so is an obvious and transparent tactic by very well funded Right Wing interests acting all across Europe to stoke fear, anger and dissent. They would love nothing more than Dublin Riot 2.

    That is all.

There are reasons behind other flags going up and I'm sure you understand what they are in each case. Ye really need to stop pretending you don't know the intent behind the tricolours.

This has been put up in response to the flag stuff. The telling difference is the woman who put it up isn't hiding her identity. It's Máirin de Burca who is a civil rights activist from back in the seventies. It's somewhat telling that the lads hanging the flag on light posts and such are choosing to hide their identity, meanwhile they're shown up a woman in her late eighties who has done far more for the country than than they ever will.

Máirin seems to be typical of the old school activists who's niavity will be the death of the Irish nation. She believes the narrative that those putting up the flags on lamp poles are filled with hate, when that is the furthest from the truth. They are doing it for a love of the country, a love for their neighbourhoods, a love for their families and a love for their future generations. The thing is, for Máirin and many like her, they've bought into the division that the media and politicians has sown. They believe anyone with an opposing view is bad and hate filled, its all terribly sad, and unfortunately all the divison only benefits the elites and those making money from it.

I think I will buy some flags on Temu and send them to the IPAS folk in East Wall** to put up. Next time the true patriots go out shouting at a building covered in tricolours their brain cell will explode.

**lovely people btw, I met many of them at the English classes provided by volunteers in Ballybough. Give me ten of them over one loser flying the flag at half mast on public property.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,395 ✭✭✭eightieschewbaccy

Or she simply doesn't buy into the hate that you and others are pushing. She also doesn't feel the need to hide her identity when putting up the flags all over the place. Also she's the only clearly local person putting up the flags. 😂

They are doing it for love of the country, lol. The scum hanging them in my area are doing it because they are frustrated chumps that blame foreigners for their shortcomings.

They don't care about the real issues in the community at all.

You are overthinking it. The are just scobies being scobies.

I know Máirin, she’s got the activist gene in every cell of her body. Fair play to her. Saying what the vast majority of us think.
