    Not unconnected however.

There’s absolutely no reason that a system like that could not be adopted particularly for any new cars sold and/or registered after a given date.

That way when cars are presented for their NCT, in a couple of years, it is a simple matter to check whether they do or do not have the mandatory registration plate.

It won’t eliminate the short-term problem but it would reduce it to one for older cars.

But its no good only failing people on dodgy plates at the nct. Cos they just change the normal ones back on for the nct, then change them after they leave.

They need to be challenged on the other 364 days of the year.

I agree but if you have to use officially mandated plates, there is no reason for ever having a dodgy plate on your car at any stage.

And if that the plates are definitely checked at the NCT (to make sure they are the officially mandated plates), you know that if you subsequently change them, you have no defence whatsoever (since you can’t pretend you always had the dodgy plates and just didn’t realise it).

100% agree. 365 days a year enforcement is required.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 340 ✭✭Kiteview

I agree but the first step has to be to cut down the wiggle room on the issue, so no one can trot out the “But I thought the plates were legal when I got them” line - and have the issue before the court with judges going out of their way to give people the benefit of the doubt on the issue.

    Bit more enforcement being reported…..

I took mine off a couple of weeks ago. Some careless avensis driver reversed into my front bumper with her tow bar just as I was walking up to the car. I didn't see any damage and so waved her off, but the plate had a small crack.

Anyway, I drive a passat. Every passat I see with non standard plates looks like a try hard to me now, my own included. Looks like I may have saved myself €120 (eventually).

Saw one last night with incredibly tiny black type lost in the middle of a grey plate.

Saw one today that when the light from my DRLs hit it, in daylight, went basically invisible. I imagine it'll be a blank box on any camera going.

Colours were totally wrong in normal conditions anyway so they will hopefully get pulled.

Yes they can issue a fine per plate, each being a separate offence.

Of course, a fixed fine of €60 is heading towards the "I'll worry about it if/when they catch me" territory, especially if only randomly enforced. These folks already spent nearly that much on the dodgy plate which may have paid off many times over in avoided fines for speeding/tolls/etc.

I doubt it was the plates he was pulled for, but the old blue have to be seen to be doing something. I handed them a dangerous driving report a week ago and they have yet to contact me back to make a statement and provide footage where some lunatic Karen almost ran me off the road, clipping my mirror and drove like a nut job to escape me after I motioned her to pull over.

My reading of the post was that it'd be €60 per plate if wrong colour and/or size, another €60 if wrong font, another €60 for the EU flag and/or IRL being missing and another €60 for 4d plates. So if you have the full suite it could be €480.

Ya you're right. So €120 a pop. Which is cheaper than a speeding fine...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,517 ✭✭✭✭User1998

Seems fair considering speeding actually puts others in danger

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,858 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

Ya but the point was that if you pay for plates that avoid speed cameras, then you save money in the long run as the fine you'd get for dodgy plate is less (and no penalty points) than if you were caught by a gosafe van.

Maybe more people will buy plates that actually evade ANPR and speed cameras if they're going to be fined for a shade and a missing EU flag anyway.

Ah come on, are these people so stupid that they can't do a very basic risk calculation?

    Maybe they are.

How many times will you be speeding past a speed van?

How many times will you be literally just be seen by a Garda?

Looks like they now have the offence on their app and can stop you and issue fines every day of the week if they want.

It will be a very profitable few weeks for the gardai

Saw one yesterday evening on the M7 on my way home, it was a dark grey plate with very small black writing on it that I couldnt even read when it was up close. Gonna check my dashcam later and if I have a clip I will pop it up.

I think this will finally mark the end of all the try-hard number plates.
    They are genuinely awful things.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,464 ✭✭✭mikeecho

From my understanding, if the plate has a white background, and legal size digits, it'll legal.

Even if the digits are transparent to IR, but not to visible light.

The "new" legislation, which was waiting to be signed for years, only enacted the ability to issue tickets for number plate offences.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,864 ✭✭✭✭murpho999

Delighted to see this. I just think that people who these stupid number plates think that the rules of the road don't apply to them. Probably also park on footpaths and drive in middle lanes on 3 lane motorways like M50 and M7

Hope this really gets enforced now and we see the end of them. In no other country do you see people with their format for number plates.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,390 ✭✭✭Deedsie

You would wonder how long it will take AGS to start pulling for this? A few high profile checkpoints with a fine for this moronic carry on might cop people on a bit. Unfortunately I have no faith in AGS roads policing so doubt anything will change.

It will be like shooting fish in a barrel with the amount of these number plates around. Easy money.
