Technically these are SCP’s so designed as long stay parking. No overstay until 10 hours or something.

But the caveat is that they must be charging so they can be ticketed if you find a warden.

Problem is there's legit reasons the car might not be charging, the charging session could have failed after you walked away

You can check it on the app but if you can't restart it remotely there's not much you can do without going back to the car (happened to me once)

Now if I'd gotten ticketed for blocking a charger I'd probably have accepted the fine but I think there's also an argument that EV drivers shouldn't be punished for insufficient or unreliable chargers

Ideally the traffic wardens would be able to see how long a car has been plugged in and not charging and there would be some grace period before being ticketed

I've also often thought that free parking for EVs in a paid parking zone is just asking for abuse. An alternative model would be to charge for parking and make the electricity free if you wanted to encourage EV adoption

Yeah I know it's slightly different but when I charge in barrack Obamas on the ESB charger I get a warning as soon as I stop the charge to say I'll get charged for overstay. I've no idea how much it is but it definitely makes me hurry up and get out of the bay as soon as I'm done

I should have taken the picture of the 3 EVs parked and not even plugged at the 4 bays from Dundrum Sc. It seems the problem got worse lately as the management printed posters asking people not to "park" but use the bays only for charging. But they are awfully handy a stroll from the door.

Again I'd call that a good argument for not putting EV chargers in prime parking locations

Don't throw them around with the bins either, but not right beside the entrance

A lot of it stems from newbie's who think that charging bays are really just exclusive EV parking whether they are charging or not.

Lots of mistakes in the Dundrum Town Centre charging spots — the leftmost ESB one on Level 2M requires most cars to park at an extreme angle because there's a huge pillar in between spaces (that's made even bigger with some cladding used for ads) and the charge point is inexplicably beside the right one instead of being placed in the middle:

    image.png

There are similar huge pillars at the Level 2 PodPoint chargers, which make it very difficult to get out of the car (especially as the spaces are quite tight on both sides anyway)

Annoyingly, that Zoe banner is literally doing nothing as the car is discontinued a while now.

    CCS charging cable theft UK

Pity it was not charging at 350kW at the time. Looks like a hacksaw was used.

I think it's a different banner now, that's an old photo off Plugshare

Honestly I'm surprised it took this long for that to start, lot of copper in those heavy cables

Interesting news here, ChargePoint with 19kW home chargers.

Anyone know whether these will be likely to be compatible with Irish homes?

Nope, likely single phase as the US single phase charging can go up to 80A

82A? not a hope on a single phase Irish domestic supply.

I mean, you can have up to 29kva on a single phase here afaik but it will cost you

Also our cars are not capable of over 32a on single phase anyway

Get three phase and put a fast charger in your driveway 😀

Teslabjorn review of a decent V2G option for MEB based cars. 11kW charging at 25Amps too. ESB networks could be scratching their heads for a while before they’d agree to this.

Maybe you might have knowledge on this. Long story but cutting it short- I have intermittent issues with charging the Born overnight. Maybe once a month the charging cuts off with the EV circuit breaker thrown. I have been told that my house fuse is 63A. I have batteries which charge overnight at 3.6kW I believe. Very occasionally I may have an extra load on like the dishwasher. I have been advised that I may need to get a higher rated house fuse. Talked to ESB Networks and they talked about going from 8kVA to 12kVA. Also mentioned I may need to go to 16kVA which would be 2k euros cost. Putting on new tails was also mentioned. They are going to visit and do a voltage assessment? on the house. I understand electricity basics but am not an electrician so if someone could walk me through this I'd appreciate it. By the by, about 12 months ago the house fuse blew (old type round fuse 50A?) and a passing electrician removed this and was about to replace with a new fuse but noticed there was a 2nd fuse- 63A already installed so all good............apart from my occasional voltage spike? Thanks in advance.

Maybe start a new thread, put up a photo of fuse board marking which fuse tripped. Include make and model of charger etc. Does your charger have load sensing? You you have a charger app or solar panel/ battery app that shows house load at the time the breaker tripped? Ideally get the ev charger installer to check it first.

    63a main fuse.
At night your charging the batteries at 3.6kw (16a)

    Car at 3.6kw or 7.4kw? (16 or 32a)

    Dishwasher?

    16+32+dishwasher shouldn’t not be tripping a 63a fuse.

    Something else at play?

What RCBO do you have connected to the EV charge point?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,863 ✭✭✭joe1303l

I’d definitely start with applying for the 12kVa upgrade with ESB networks which is currently free. Ask them to fit an 80A main fuse when this work is being done. This upgrade not always be free hence why I would definitely apply for it now. It’s just a form to fill out and submit to ESB Networks. Your board will still have a 63A breaker though which shouldn’t be tripping out based on the loads you’ve described.

Thanks for your detailed reply. Car charges at 7.4kW - 32A. The RCBO on the EV circuit is a GARO rated for 32A. The charger itself is a dumb charger installed by approved electrical contractor about 4 years ago - has proved to be robust and very reliable except for the maybe 6 weekly glitch as described.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 369 ✭✭Ev fan

Thanks for this.Is it possible that I have the 12kVA already rather than the 8kVA? - is there any way of knowing by looking at the fuse box? I like the idea of getting an upgrade to an 80A house fuse and will definitely pursue this when EV Networks contact me back. Is the main house circuit breaker/ fuse controlling all the other circuit breakers- I.e if it sees high current load getting close to the 63A that it shuts off the EV circuit through the breaker - OR are the circuits and breakers independent of one another?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 42,531 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

There was a period a few years back where Garo RCBO’s were tripping constantly, a bad batch.

Get it swapped out for a Hager or newer unit before you spend any money elsewhere.

If that fixes yours problem. Sorted!

Nope. I rang ESB Networks in Cork and they posted out a hardcopy form. Sent it back and several months later got a call from the regional ESB Networks office to say they had it on a job list and would get to it in a few weeks.

I heard last week that a new cable has been developed where it'll spray anyone who cuts it with the same dye that's used to protect cash.

According to the chief of a UK CPO (can't remember which one) thieves are only getting about 20 quid scrap value for each cable. Quite the risk for something of low value. It's not like you could do a whole hub and leg it.
