I like your idea about superhubs - something like Gridserve in the UK- nice facilities with weather protection coffee and shop - no fast food necessarily needed. In our small country only possibly 3 needed. Pascal could help out with the extra 500 million euro found at the back of the couch recently. 😀

Renault Megane e Tech? Infotainment system supposed to be very good- don't know about buttons though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,833 ✭✭✭CMOTDibbler

I posted a pic of it above. A LHD car, but it's the same on the RHD, just was the clearest pic available. Full control of climate from buttons including temp up/down.

Infotainment is Google built in and it's brilliant. Good few manufacturers using it now - Volvo, Polestar and I think Ford are bringing it in too. Seems like a no-brainer, can't understand why more manufacturers don't use it.

Megane may not be a runner for him, but looks like Scenic has same setup and that might appeal to him more. But 2 for the list anyway thanks.

Megane is a small car relatively speaking, so probably Scenic is the offering if he wants something with presence alright.

If you're limiting yourself to only eCars on your Dublin-Sligo journeys, then you're missing out on plenty chargers on the route, albeit not many multi-unit locations. The SSE spot 15mins up the road from Kinnegad off J17 Mullingar has 5 units/10spaces and never seems busy.

not sure if this was posted already

Based on my actual use, my car range could be between 70 and 500km. I think EVs are very sensitive to small changes such as removing hubcaps or adjustments in software, so IMHO finding realistic test would be impossible. My problem with WLTP is that somehow it is not applied equally by manufacturers so comparing across brands becomes difficult.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,185 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

Yes, the difference in application is problematic. Same as the EPA test, they have a 3 or 5 stage EPA, and the OEM decides which to use.

70-500km, that must be an Ioniq28?

I cannot do more than 230km without trying really hard in I28. It is old TM3 with LFP, I think WLTP is 480km.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,833 ✭✭✭CMOTDibbler

The Ioniq 28 wasn't rated under WLTP which only came into force in 2019. The previous system (NEDC) rated it at 280km.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,185 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

I'd struggle to get 70km range in my TM3 LFP when I had it. My Ioniq could do 400km (and this was proven on youtube by someone else) if you pushed it. 70wh/km was achievable in summer around town.

not really Ev specific to be honest but does the areas highlighted on this car look a bit strange? or are they some kind of door protector

    Just does not look right

They appear to be the black rubber strips to stop the car hitting other cars or off walls when opening.

And judging by the wheels, the owner needs all the bump protection they can get their hands on!

Has all the hall marks of being a taxi too. Interior seats, condition. 2021 with NCT, yet NCT have no record of it. Also the fact that he’s gone to the troupe of showing a photo of the private tax disc yet it was only taxed for 3 months to get that disc. So clarify this before pursuing.

I want to get a 10m long 3-pin charging cable, so that I can charge using the outdoor socket round the corner at my folks' house - it's the only place I regularly visit where I would need a significant overnight charge, but a standard 5m cable won't reach where the socket is. I've found a 10m one at Argos for £135stg, but it's only a 10A plug so would take a good 18-20 hours to charge from say 10-90%. There's a 13A one on ebay, but is it suspiciously cheap at half the price of the Argos one?

    Item no. 267188619434

The problem with a 10m cable supplying 13A is that it'll need to draw more than 13A from the socket which will probably blow a fuse

I'd want to be very confident about the wiring of the socket before leaving that charger running

Although it'd be more expensive, would it make sense to get a 2nd hand wallbox and just get an electrician to install it at your parents house? Just looking on Adverts there's a couple of chargers going for around €200

10A is going to give you 2.3kW, you're not going to get much more than that. Don't know if any granny charger will give the full 13A (which would be 3kW).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 696 ✭✭✭mr chips

Ah ok, I didn't realise that - thanks for the clarification folks. A seller of a 10m 2.3kW cable has since come back to say I can specify a 10m 3.3kW cable, but if I was going to just plug such a cable into that 3-pin outdoor socket would I actually be better going for the 2.3kW cable after all?

Not sure yet if installing a wallbox there would be an option. My father would have been the one to discuss that with, but he passed away recently and while my elderly mother still lives there, I think she would only be confused by the question (especially when she's a bit swamped with other issues such as pension arrangements, dealing with household bills etc). Last time we had a chat about EVs in general, she thought that a chargepoint would be the same size as a petrol pump and didn't want something like that outside the house …

Anyway - in the meantime I've had a look for wallboxes on Adverts. I've searched for EV charger, EV chargepoint, EV wallbox, EV tethered charger but am not seeing anything for around the €200 mark - got a link?

Looking up different stuff about v2l because my dad has just bought an ev6 which I know definitely can do it and I cam across tis on the top gear website, saying cupra tavascan which I have can do it, along with a whole host of other cars which surprised me. Is this true?

It's prob never going to be used but just nice to know if I ever have a power cut.

Doesn't appear to from what I can see online. Maybe in another market, but not in the UK/Ireland. V2H/V2G definitely doesn't seem correct.
I know most of the others on that list do though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,574 ✭✭✭Buddy Bubs

It says all ID products too, which is weird as it is a UK article being top gear.

    But I suspect it's incorrect

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,131 ✭✭✭✭the_amazing_raisin

The MEB based cars can all do V2G but only DC. You need an external inverter with a CCS plug to take advantage of it, similar to the Nissan Leaf via Chademo

At the moment there's only one wallbox from VW that works with it and it isn't available in Ireland

Definitely a decision that hasn't aged well. The one positive is you can pull something like 20kW from the car which is enough for the most power hungry houses

All granny cables should be 10amp max in the UK. Try to use a car branded one such as kia as they tend to be better built and have temperature sensors fitted inside the household end plug to detect overheating unlike ones non car branded from screwfix or eBay/adverts.

Most extension leads sold in woodies etc are low quality. They are not designed for nearly full power for 24 hours. You should try get one with a waterproof socket inline where it joins to the car granny lead.

I like these UK based company but cost, delivery, import taxes may make it a high price.

Beware many granny cables have bigger than usual household type plugs so do not fully fit nor waterproof seal into cheaper/smaller waterproof sockets.

If cost is not a problem then buy this, the safest option

If you can reduce charging speed further and this reduces risks of plugs and sockets overheating. Sure it takes longer but heat can build over 20 hours and many electrical parts have plastic that easily melts when it gets hot.

The existing old outdoor socket may have been left unclosed for years and the connections inside may be a bit rusty and damp. Make sure it is fully closed shut and maybe check the plug has not gotten warm after say 5 hours before you go to bed.

According to this it does not have V2L.

Note UK Vs ROI cars can be different and sometimes the feature is only on done trims etc. Unless you can find the original ROI brochure it would be hard to be certain

From a quick Google it does not seem to be offered with that feature in any markets.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,574 ✭✭✭Buddy Bubs

Yeah i was pretty sure it didn't until I saw that. I won't need it anyway I can't remember the last time I lost power in the house.

My parents house does in storms so may be handy in the kia for them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 696 ✭✭✭mr chips

That's brilliant info, thanks a million. Think I'll go with the one you posted rather than risk something that could cause problems further down the line. Even at home, we might end up relying on granny charging for a while as it can be very hard to get hold of an electrician round where I am, so I'd rather have something robust.

I've just seen that on the face of it, the price for that cable would be £30 cheaper if I got it delivered to the address where I regularly visit in RoI (and where I'll be visiting later this week) than to my home address in Co. Antrim, but with a caveat that I'd be responsible for "local tax & customs fees". Not living in the south, this isn't something I've had to deal with before, but according to what I've found here and here, customs fees are unlikely but import VAT probably would be payable and therefore increase the price above what I'd pay to just get it delivered to my home. Does anyone know if this is applied pretty strictly, or is it more of a gamble?

Its a gamble but probably not worth taking if in no hurry. They may message you in advance to pay fees, they may drop a note into ROI address but it may cause delays and not arrive when you are there. They may send tax free meaning more likely to attract tax on delivery.

I thought that might be the case alright - reckon I'll just get it delivered to home altogether. Thanks again for the feedback, it's really helpful when getting to grips with so many new-to-me things.
