I'm kinda over all the snow photos now, just delighted it's gone and I hope it doesn't come back. Its a week now since the heavy fall and I think we've all seen enough photos of people's back gardens and the mountains. It brought huge hardship too.

Like another poster I kept thinking of those buried sheep today and how many pregnant ewes have were buried and won't be found before they suffocate. Likewise I saw horses in fields today that were full of frost , ice and water…they had no rugs and no shelter, these animals suffered a lot in this last week.

Was thrilled to be able to drive to Kenmare today after being grounded for most of this week. I'm hoping Spring comes in the next 6 weeks at the latest.

After a week of snow we can finally see green again which made me happy.

It was fun for awhile but then it felt a bit like being in lockdown again, stuck in the house & the kids off school.

Looking forward to Monday & a return to normality 😊

7 days on from the first snowfall and 36 hours into a slow thaw, plenty of snow still hanging around my location in County Clare. Beautiful starry night with patches of low hanging fog. Temp 1.7c.

Was in Thurles tonight, freezing fog and still some snow cover around there with partially covered fields. Nice moon halo too. The ACS at the Racecourse was reporting -1c earlier this evening.

I slipped three times in Iceland, one of those times was on black ice literally as soon as I set foot outside to go grocery shopping, so it was very unexpected. It was a bit of a nerve wracking experience carrying a heavy bag in those extremely slippery conditions but fortunately I didn't fall again. Another time was coming down a set of stairs from beside the top of a waterfall, but plenty of others fell as well. I've never slipped in Ireland, hopefully I'm enough of a pro now to keep it that way!

Horses are very hardy and resilient to snow and sub zero temperatures. Their coats are able to fluff up and the oils keep the moisture out. Rugs can interfere with their natural coats. All they need is constant forage and water. Digesting hay helps keep them warm. They need to be healthy in the first place of course.

Sheep on the other hand don’t cope well with snow and seem to be predisposed to getting stuck in drifts. They seem to seek shelter in direction of the wind which is of course where the drifts are.

Some horses, not all. The breed will determine it's ability to withstand or not the weather conditions.

how do you get a clearer image on the copernicus browser website? It’s blurred when I zoom in.

Lots of sheep out in the fields between camp and annascaul yesterday m I assume they were out all week. Drove over to inch for an hour. Lots of people on the beach. Some swimming. Very little snow left,, even on the mountains.

the horses I saw locally were saturated and standing in pure muck, their coats were certainly not keeping the moisture out and they looked miserable. They had no extra fodder and no shelter, all the grass was covered in snow. Other horses had rugs in different fields I passed (different owners) . As a previous horse owner I would have always put rugs on horses that were going to outdoors in this kind of Winter weather.

Memories that will literally last a lifetime. Well done.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

nope, I think this forum is for discussing the cold weather and all it brings, good and bad. It is not just a photography forum for people out in snowy mountains. So I think it was ok to say I am over seeing photos at this stage, and ok to say I am thrilled it is melting, after a pretty tough week for many people stranded in Kerry, Cork, Tipp, Carlow and Wicklow, and the animal welfare issues many farmers faced too.

Anyway as the weather is a balmy 10 degrees today in many places it is now a moot point. Onwards and upwards, here's to Spring. Cheers!

Cheers @DayintheBog ! I'm very happy to hear that. The day before the snow I was over there and was wondering how these guys had fared many times in the past week! You've made my day. A lot of them were on the higher slopes of Caherconree, hope they all made it through.

I was over in Inch 3 days ago when there was barely anyone out and the beach was sublime. However I didn't venture off the main road as conditions then were too bad.

Were you tempted to swim mykrodot or have you taken a break from the sea? Great photos.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

Horrible left over snow still hanging about here in the north. Very slippy in parts, worse than it was when we were completely covered.
I’ll be glad to see it gone as much as I have enjoyed it along with the big open skies at night time.

Anyone see this phenomenon before? It's not lens flare, was an actual giant ring of light around the moon last night.

Thinking it could be the point at which the moonlight strikes the top of the fog.

I actually swam today in Cromane and you could feel the cold in the water after all the snow! Had taken a break over Christmas cos I had flu so it was good to get back for my first time in a while today. Lots of people in too! :-)

Moon halo, caused by ice crystals high up in the atmosphere. Brought in on the milder, moisture laden southerly airflow. Of course, high up in the atmosphere this turns to ice.

Then up and spake an old Sailòr,
Had sailed to the Spanish Main,
"I pray thee, put into yonder port,
          For I fear a hurricane.

"Last night, the moon had a golden ring,
And to-night no moon we see!"
The skipper, he blew a whiff from his pipe,
And a scornful laugh laughed he.

Colder and louder blew the wind,
          A gale from the Northeast,
The snow fell hissing in the brine,
And the billows frothed like yeast.

I think Met E. might dispute the hurricane, more likely rain or snow.
