Light dusting of snow in west Galway. Enough to turn everything white. More please.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

Raining in north Kerry. Temperature above freezing for the day.

Car not frozen in Clonmel for the first time since Saturday, definitely warmer at 3 degrees, ice still on roads and footpath still rock hard and slippier now it’s wet so not out of the woods here by any stretch, but it’s the start of the end atleast.

finally, finally, finally a thaw is starting here in my part of Kerry yay! Gutters dripping from a roof of melting snow, roads clearing, pathways clearing, birds happier. Bring it on, the sooner the better, life can resume!

And as I type this one of the headline stories on RTE is that 2024 was the hottest on record and hotter than humanity was ever meant to experience !

The media never let up, more things to scare us , even as elderly and vulnerable people are still up in mountain areas, freezing and cut off from the world. The bad news and scaremongering is never ending. Whether I believe it or not doesn't even come in to it, I have kids and grandkids to worry about, but PLEASE just give us a break from the fear for a few days .

Here in Mid Kerry , it looks like the thaw has started. Just been out for a walk and the main road from my village, which was an ice rink yesterday, is now just damp and no sign of ice. We had some rain overnight and the temp now is 4.7c .. feels quite balmy compared to a couple of days ago.

Not sure what its like further out from my village but will have a venture out again later

    What? For keeping warm?

Many can't afford these new appliances. Should people freeze?

Day 7 of snow. No thaw on the main cover over grass despite temperatures rallying from -6c to +2c. No snow/rain/sleet as the front broke up just south of here on the Kilkenny-Laois border at 90m ASL. Overcast and cold with a lazy east breeze.

Definite thaw in north Kerry. Water dripping from gutters. It's a lovely sight to see. Roll on a not to wet spring and a scorching hot summer.

There's a wind that wasnt there all week.

Snowing again in west Galway but it's very light. I'd imagine the Connemara mountains are getting a decent fall.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

Snowing here outside Lisdoonvarna (towards Corkscrew Hill, Ballyvaughan) at 150m asl.

Winter storm last weekend left us nothing but little sleet that gave the landscape a dandruff appearance, so was a big let down. But this snow has surprised us!

Anyone in the Wicklow mountains area would it be safe to assume there will still be decent snow cover tomorrow on the mountains? Want to take the kids for a hike on Sat ( where roads allow travel safely etc)

probably a silly question so hands up. Snowed a bit overnight in my area. I noticed while walking that some steel covers don’t have snow on them. All the tarmacadam around them has snow. These steel covers are not sheltered or covered by a car overnight etc.

    Picture below.
Why don’t these steel covers hold the snow?

I enjoy seeing snow fall and life hasn't been disrupted too much apart from schools closed. Am glad to see the back of it now at this stage though.

A foul sewer underneath carrying all sorts of liquid warmer than the surrounding environment most likely.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 113 ✭✭ClimateObserver

Wastewater will be relatively warmer - typically around 10c and heat will always rise and heat the steel cover enough to thaw any ice on top.

Some snow in Galway this morning, turned to sleet, and now has turned back to snow. The small bit that accumulated this morning thawed with the sleet but still some hints of white left on grass.

As others giving their brutal honest opinions, here's mine.

I've not been a fan of this spell from the beginning as much as it seems I'm enjoying myself with all the images captured. The reality is nightmares, anxiety and stress. I love snow but what Tipp, Limerick etc have had is too much in my opinion. I've been very lucky in Dublin not getting that level of snow they've had and then for it to stick around all week for many roads. That's nightmare fuel if I've ever seen it.

The spell started off just about as perfect as you could ask for in terms of seasonable wintry weather without being too much of an inconvenience, some beautiful sunny days with frosty nights. Then came Sunday 5th January which for those impacted by the snow was too much as already said but also here in the east with the rain it was horrendous. Other terrible days in 2025 will face tough competition from it for the worst day of the year. It just kept going and going and going and having to drive in it was not fun though still better than what others had.

I guess this is part of maturing realising the hardship this weather brings to others and having to commute in it yourself. I used to face difficulty having to empathise and put myself in others' shoes but that's all I can think about now. Or my anxiety is just taking the best of me.

So I'll be glad to see the back of it. Lord knows how we got through 2010 running out of salt and grit two winters in a row and for a significantly longer duration.

And just like that it's back to sleet.

"And now, the end is near
And so we face the final frontal system"

Temps rising to 7.9c at Sherkin Island in Cork as much milder air extends slowly from the south. It will take another 12-18hrs hours or so for the milder air to reach northern counties.

A very thoughtful post, thanks sryanbuen. As the snow fades it struck me that it's a novelty for a few hours and a real inconvenience thereafter.

Jaysus -14 in far north Scotland. Epic scenes there I'd imagine.

Yip - and here in Carrigaline / Cork we are back to p*ssing rain again after a few very cold dry days ( NO SNOW or ICE really ). At start of all this event we just had continuous terrential rainfall for about 36 hours, so back to that rain now ..
