Soft tyres were a terrible idea.

Yes!! Get in Max you beauty!! Bullshit penalty he was given in qualifying, only served to fire him up even more I bet. Once again he’s in another league to all other drivers, his race craft is so much better.

    Gasly! Woohoo!

Love it GP “definitely did not drive unnecessarily slowly today”. Karma is right. Simply lovely.

so this race showed why max is a four time world champion.

It showed that the race control is F1 is a joke.

And Lewis Hamilton couldn’t give less of a **** at this point in the season.

Bottas so close to a point. Albon pitted for new softs in second last lap, did he get fasted lap?

DAvidson going through the lando pen, Max so aware of the flags is remarkable

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,177 ✭✭✭Longing

Just saw that. Incredible awareness of a marshal waving way off to the side of the track. Max had not even the benefit of the LED board where other drivers had.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 10,723 Mod ✭✭✭✭Andrew76

His race awareness is something else, Schumacher like having that much free capacity on top of driving the car.

Stella correctly says it’s the drivers responsibility to lift under yellow, then proceeds to say the rules should be flexible or changed just because they fell foul of it, make your mind up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,739 ✭✭✭CMOTDibbler

That's the difference really. Situational awareness at very high speed. Lando said he never saw it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,061 ✭✭✭Hijpo

NOt the first time we have heard Hamilton wanting to retire the car.

Like, that has to be the absolute pinnacle of juvenile tantrums. Whatever about drivers getting angry on the radio, thats just being a big baby because he isnt winning.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,533 ✭✭✭NinjaTruncs

I assume they couldn't retired without serving the drive through, if he retired after coming into the pit to serve it, without leaving the pit, would that be considered served? I assume not.

    What a driver Max is.

    Different gravy altogether.

    Simply lovely.

Must be a record number of penalties.

    Interesting race.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,739 ✭✭✭CMOTDibbler

Yeah. Same as Stroll, serve it now when it doesn't matter or serve it later when it might. No brainer.

Still, the petulance is something we're seeing a lot of from Hamilton this year. Ferrari might be regretting their choice.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 10,723 Mod ✭✭✭✭Andrew76

Ocon getting replaced by Doohan for the last race (a deal between him and the team rather than getting dropped). Merc should do the same with Hamilton and Antonelli tbh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,342 ✭✭✭PsychoPete

I'd say Toto can't wait to get rid of Hamilton

Serious question - what could the engineers have done to the Red Bull to make it so much faster than for the sprint?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,739 ✭✭✭CMOTDibbler

If I remember after the sprint, Max (and Checo) were saying the car was sliding all over the place. So clearly an aerodynamic change of some sort. May have been multiple inputs to get the result.

Edit: Ted Kravitz said they lowered the car, changed the suspension setting and the front wing setting. So yeah, multiple inputs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,731 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

Was watching the race earlier, it was boring and my lad wanted to go for spin, so stopped watching. Was going to just check results, so happy I didn't but watched it back. I had turned off about 2 laps before the mirror came off Albon's car.

Very entertaining race from then on.

The Race control is absolutely baffling though, it was so obvious they needed a vsc for 1 lap to let a marshal run out and grab it. Instead they ballsed up 2 driver's race and caused undue risk.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,731 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

Oh also, what's Lewis Hamilton playing at? Things are hard so I want to go home? Cop yourself on.

And for those who listen to the race podcast, we'll definitely be spending time in Valteri Bottas sympathy corner. I thought we'd finally get to be in whatever the opposite is, but 11th is so harsh. It does take him up to 22nd in the championship though, Logan Sargent is now last.

I didn’t watch the race , catch highlights later , but what happened between Max and George . I got it now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,739 ✭✭✭CMOTDibbler

Max said in the press conference that he'd never seen somebody try so hard to fcuk another driver over.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,177 ✭✭✭Longing

In Abu Dhabi very high chance that Lando could lose second place in the drivers' championship to LecLerc as Ferrari always go well there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,731 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

George has always been a marmite character, this makes him look a lot worse...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,342 ✭✭✭PsychoPete

From Verstappens interview with Viaplay :

"I have a lot of respect for a lot of drivers, but after last night I completely lost that respect for him. I just thought it was ridiculous how he tried to force a penalty on me. And I was heavily pissed at him for that. He always does it very nicely here in front of the camera, but then when you’re inside with him in person, it’s just a different person. I can't stand that and it's actually better for him to **** off. I don't want to get involved in this.”

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,620 ✭✭✭✭Frank Bullitt

And Ferrari are probably wondering what the hell they have done.

False start, lost places as a result of that, and then speeding in the pitlane. It might not be the best car or compliant with his style, but those are his mistakes, and his alone.

I get laced on the Autosport forum for saying he is past his best, clearly there are some rose tinted glasses over there because it’s clear to me that his best days are behind him. He was appalling today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,731 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

He will probably be a lot better next season. But it also wouldn't surprise me if he's well beaten by Leclerc next season. We'll have a better insight after the first few races.

A line I've started hearing is "great drivers don't forget how to drive". Last person that was said about was Daniel Riccardo.

    This too shall pass.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,186 ✭✭✭wazzzledazzle

Great race and couldn't have worked out better, Max putting George in his place yet again, Ferrari gaining points, pretty fair analysis on sky and lovely to see Ant & Bernie putting that other clown (Naomi) in her place when she was whining about the severity of the penalties dished out.

Checo is finished, he'll never race again in F1 after next week. Lewis is a busted flush. Charles will have him on toast next season.

As races work out, that was pretty much perfect for me

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,416 ✭✭✭Gamb!t

I say Russell isnt the only one with the nice guy in front of the camera and a kn0b off it.

Saying that I'm glad Verstappen called him out on it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,342 ✭✭✭PsychoPete

There's no bullish!t with Verstappen, what you see is what you get. Russell has a bit of weasel vibe to him but I'd agree that is probably a couple of drivers different when the cameras are off

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,739 ✭✭✭CMOTDibbler

I think somebody on 'The Race' comments referred to Russell as the typical school prefect. Perfect analogy. 😂

This made me lol. I wouldn't be his biggest fan, but Yuki can be quite amusing.

1 thing I noticed and meant to ask about yesterday. At the start/intro of the race they showed the weekend attendance as "sold out". I'm pretty sure every other track shows how many people attended, so was this f1 hiding the fact that Qatar has low attendance because of low capacity?

Taught the Norris penalty was harsh (not a fan of Norris by the way) few extra points for Ferrari should potentially make the last race for the constructors interesting, if Max was in Norris position on the first lap I cant help thinking he would of made it stick and take the lead, delighted for Max true champ.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,177 ✭✭✭Longing

At the beginning of the season penalty guidelines circulated to the teams on 19 February 2024

    it added.

“A double yellow flag infringement is considered a serious compromise of safety, which is why such offences carry such a severe penalty.”

Norris after race interview said the penalty was justified.

Did anyone hear about Max tackling George on the driver's parade lap on the back of the truck. Heated words. Max also said to George, I will have my position back by the first corner and I will take you on the inside.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,186 ✭✭✭wazzzledazzle

Yes, he did say that to him on the track parade but can't find the clip. George must be some level of idiot to be pissing off the best driver on the grid like that.

Also to the previous OP, neither of the penalties dished out (Lando & Lewis) were harsh according to the rule book. Didn't stop two of the clueless Sky presenters having a whinge about it, unlike when Max was given a made up penalty the day before.

In fairness to Jenson, Crofty, Ant & Bernie, i thought they covered the penalties very fairly, although Jenson is always top notch when he's on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,731 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

They mentioned on The Race podcast that both Nikita Mazepin and Nicholas Latifi got 30 second penalties back in 2021 for the same reason - the difference here was that the penalties were added at the end of the race so no time to serve the drive through penalty.

So the reason for Lando's penalty can't be contested and the penalty applied can't either. The only grumble could be on how frequently (or not) this is monitored, because I reckon this happens more than we see. If Max hadn't said anything over the radio would this have been spotted I wonder?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,186 ✭✭✭wazzzledazzle

Yep, although they seemed to think that they had checked every driver and why it took so long for the penalty to be given, although i have my doubts, and i'd say your right, that the double yellows aren't always observed.

I'd say one thing, is that they need to get their house in order when it comes to the issuing of penalties

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,731 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

Do the FIA see the telemetry for all cars? I assume they do - in which case it should be simple to check for all cars that are near the double yellows and see if (a) they lifted off the throttle or (b) applied brakes. If none did, then penalty. You could nearly automate it like.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,186 ✭✭✭wazzzledazzle

Ye, you'd assume they'd have to. And, exactly, sure they could automate the penalty if the will was there, but we've seen some of the bureaucracy this year.

God know,s i hope we don't have the same crap next year and there are rules all of the drivers understand.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,966 ✭✭✭Jacovs

Norris also hit with 3 penalty points on his license for the same infringement.

It may have been technically sold out but there were loads and loads of empty seats on the race day

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,186 ✭✭✭wazzzledazzle

I wouldn't have thought so, the place was half empty on Sunday. Just more marketing nonsense from F1.

I was only talking to a friend the weekend about the cost of what we paid for full weeknd Hockenheim 2010, including flights, trains, hotels and 2 day pass for less than 500EUR.

Now obviously there are many other factors at play for a weekend at a Grand Prix these days, but for decent seats and a 3 day pass you're looking at 300/400 minimum straight away

The days of proper affordable trips to F1 are gone forever unfortunately.

If Toto really does ever want Max at Mercedes, Russell has made it more difficult now.
