Connacht are really cohesive, look far ahead of Leinster in every facet.

it’s a strange type of football fan who thinks a player who has played 15 years inter county with 3 all stars and has just finished 2nd top scorer in the mayo senior championship could possibly look good in a pick up match

Not often Dublin players are on the end of a 27 (now 23) point trimming!

The lack of a defined tackle, or any attempt to address it by FRC, is accentuated by the new rules.

Leinster's score would win a few championship matches 🙈

Yes, that’s the problem i see in the championship next year if the new rules are in place. The stronger counties are going to hand out even more thumpings to the weaker ones. People will demand a “solution” to it. What will it be? Revoke the rules, or more tiering, mimicking the hurling championship to mention just two.

For me Gaelic Football peaked 1991 to around 2005. The Armagh Tyrone games of 2005 weren't the classiest football but very intense. The 2005 final excellent.

Plenty of good individual games like Kerry v Dublin 2013. But a gradual slide since 2005.

I've no problem with the better teams winning. If you aren't good enough, you should lose. Some rules that would create a situation where instead of teams losing by 20 points they would only lose by 7/8 would be absolutely terrible.

Very one sided game Connacht 4-21 Leinster 1-11. Will the 2nd game be any more competitive? looking at the strength of the Ulster panel compared to Munster very doubful!

Agreed we don't need even bigger thumping to weaker teams and I'm sure any rules brought in is to make games more enjoyable to watch and you need matches to be competitive decided on fine margins for that to be the case.

Who cares if the likes of Carlow get trashed by Dublin? Surely these new rules are so that in the Carlow Vs Offaly games, the team with the most skilled footballers win. It will hopefully negate any negative football and incentivise good football. ie more kicking, more man on man tactics etc.

Did they interview referee for his viewpoint?

Ulster are up for this.. they mightn't say NO.

Back in the old Railway Cup days I remember from the 80s to 2000s the Ulster boys always treated it as an honour to represent their province.

An aside but Killian Spillane with Munster and first cousin Pat óg with Connacht.

Nothing is going to change until they get rid of the excessive handpassing in the game.

It's still the same excessive handpassing and lateral solo running we're seeing again.

Until you just force teams to have to kick the ball forward whether they want to or not you're not going to improve things.

They just need to do it directly and say 3 hand passes and then the ball must be kicked forward 20 yards or more.

    Whistle is a bit annoying

it’s hard to change patterns of play that have become embedded. You will see it evolve of a season or two. What is noteworthy is there is space to play into. An unforeseen consequence could be the goalkeeper coming up could become more prevalent. With 3 players having to stay up the keeper making 12 v 11 in the other half rather than 15v 14 could have more impact. Morgan getting great space here and Carroll did similar in the first game.

You can see from these games that outside of Dublin and Kerry there is a massive gap in quality in Leinster and Munster compared to Ulster and Connacht

Yeah. An unintended consequence of the ref being miked up.

I can see the solution falling between 2 stools. With so many voices\opinions.

2025 will be interesting. Revenue from the football championship is falling and that's the bottom line.

And the game has always evolved. 21 to 17 to 15 players. 1991 the free kick out of the hand introduced and so on.

There is a very Compromise Rules feel to the game tonight. That element of players & officials not being 100% sure of the rules.

I hate seeing the goalkeeper in the opposition half and would like to see it banned.

if teams were smart they should have plans made to get the ball to some of their 3 forward players fast once the attack breaks down, open goal then.

I think Leinster played a lot of div 3 & 4 players from Carlow, Laois, Wicklow etc. Connacht backboned by Ros, Mayo, Galway players with mostly div 1 experience.

The refs whistle is doing my head in

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,170 ✭✭✭Jack Daw

I'm all for the more space to play into but there is something horrible about seeing a player being able to solo at walking pace or check his stride and turn sideways in the opposite direction.

I wouldnt mind them making it 11 or 13 a side if the new rules don't fully work.

sickens me seeing the Tyrone keeper sprinting up the field. 🤦‍♂️ goalkeepers belong in goal, end of.
