Stop dangerous GOMO Cross-Border Alert Texts 🚗

When I cross into Northern Ireland, GOMO sends a text message (when driving).

If I loose coverage in NI, GOMO sends another text when coverage is restored!

Receiving and reading/muting texts whilst driving is dangerous!

How can I eliminate them? (I need to keep Bluetooth activated)

    Block them? Ignore them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,412 ✭✭✭✭endacl

    Nonnest non-issue of all time.

Do you tell family and friends to not text you as you drive across the border? How would they know? Just don't read them till you park.

I'm with Eir. They send the same messages.

What are you doing reading any texts while driving? Why isn't your phone on silent and/or do not disturb mode?

    I can't block GOMO texts.

I have an excellent notifier app which alerts me every few minutes if I don't read a text. I have to pull over and read the text to silence the alert.

I'll try muting (if that does not interfere with Bluetooth).

I'll try contacting Gomo but I doubt that it will yield the required results.

"I have an excellent notifier app which alerts me every few minutes if I don't read a text." - what is the purpose of this?

WTAF? This is 100% a you problem, Gomo, like all other providers, will quite correctly do nothing

    Two questions for you.

    1. How long are you driving ?
    2. How many points do you have on your licence so far?

    Thanks !

    This is the app

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.app.missednotificationsreminder

It's a superb app for people like me who have a large house and do not always carry their phone on their person (or are frequently in a noisy environment).

I have it programmed to give me Ding-Dong alert every 3 minutes after receiving (and missing) a text or other alert.

If you're phone is giving you a 'ding-dong' alert potentially every three minutes would you not just keep it on you? That would drive me crazy.

Again, this is all caused by your own setup OP. GOMO won't do anything as the issues are on your side and fixable by you.

A large house eh? Just how large is large?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,022 ✭✭✭eirman

Three bed bungalow with an upstairs attic office - so it's large enough to be easily out of earshot of the phone.

Sounds like you should put the phone in your glove box while turned off from now on so you dont feel the need to read messages while driving.

Have you considered that it is a PEBSADS issue? Problem exists between drivers seat and steering wheel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,022 ✭✭✭eirman

The glovebox is the worth a try - It may block 3/4G which I need for MyTuner Radio App (Controlled from the steering wheel)

Why does it need to keep pinging though? Can you not just look at your phone whenever you get a chance and reply to texts there and then? Nothing is that urgent that your phone needs to beep every 3 minutes until you see it. If something in your life is THAT important you will keep your phone close.

Uninstall the app. It's causing you anxiety.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,323 ✭✭✭bennyx_o

Depending on your phone, set up some sort of routine that puts your phone in DND (or silent) when connected to your cars Bluetooth, you may even be able to have a routine to stop the notifier app while you're connected to your cars Bluetooth

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,357 ✭✭✭✭SteelyDanJalapeno

You can edit notifications on a contact or number basis on Android, just click their name/number and look for notifications

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,022 ✭✭✭eirman

It's a superb app which I strong recommend to anyone. I chose the 3 minutes so that I get an alert when I return the room where the phone happens to be. It's great for missed call alerts.

    "Dear Gomo,

I'm a forgetful so-and-so, who refuses to learn how to carry my phone around with me.

Therefore, I leave it wherever the hell I want and have a third-party app installed that absolutely wrecks everybody’s head within earshot, every three fecking minutes. Because…..y’know, it’s simply just not feasible that I check my messages or missed calls when I get back to where I left it, I have to be reminded about it like an alzheimer’s patient.

This means I almost crash my car every time I cross the border, what are you gonna do about it?”

That phone would last about 6 minutes and 4 seconds in my house. It would be in the toilet before the second ding was finished donging.

    Flight mode when you're driving.

    It's that simple.

Uninstall the app. It's causing you anxiety.

    Plus this.

i've never heard of such a pointless app in all my life.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,022 ✭✭✭eirman

That option is not available with the Gomo contact (it is with other contacts).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 837 ✭✭✭ArrBee

    yeah, nah.

    Definately not for me…

But, I took a look and there was a screenshot that said "cell broadcasts" as a notification type?
If you disable that, would that do what you are wanting?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 792 ✭✭✭Yeah Right

Why don't you, I dunno, check your phone when you return to the room where the phone happens to be, like a non-crazy person?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,022 ✭✭✭eirman

"i've never heard of such a pointless app in all my life."

So you've never missed a call/message in a noisy environment!

So you never leave your phone out of earshot!

With this app you do not have to keep checking your phone in case you missed something.

Repeat … With this app you do not have to keep checking your phone in case you missed something.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,875 ✭✭✭Buffman

From a quick glance at that app it looks to be very easy to enable/disable notifications from it. It would probably be easier and safer for you to disable it before you go driving and enable it when you need it again.

Every network operator sends those text when roaming to avoid people complaining about 'unknown' roaming costs which may be accrued.

It's highly unlikely GOMO can or will deactivate them just for you for this reason.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

I don't know the app is THAT fantastic if it's causing you trouble. This is a problem with your app choice not with GOMO.

Why not turn off your phone when driving and turn it back on when you reach your destination.

If you need to be constantly contactable then you would keep your phone on your person. If you don't need to be constantly contactable you don't need an app pinging at you every 3 minutes. Your phone will show you notification of missed calls, texts etc. You can look at it. Or not. And decide to respond when it suits you.

But android has a notification bar at the top that shows you when you missed a call or got a message.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 71,186 ✭✭✭✭L1011

If you absolutely need to be made aware of all messages when driving, get an Android Auto headunit. It won't keep pinging at you when ignore a message.

Otherwise, this thread should be titled "Stop dangerous distracting app"

  • Administrators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 14,914 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Big Bag of Chips

I don't keep checking my phone in case I missed something. Nothing I have ever received is THAT urgent that me not seeing it immediately will have an impact.

If someone needs to call me urgently they will ring again if I miss them first time.

I think this boils down to you having a huge need to respond to everything on your phone without a certain amount of time?

If I missed a call or a message I'd just leave it till the next time I happen to pick up and look at my phone. I don't 'need to keep checking my phone'. I'll check it when I get to it.

Have you someone on their last legs or something? What's with the need to constantly be connected?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,272 ✭✭✭✭tom1ie

Why do you need this app?

You can’t be this tied to a phone can you?

it sounds like this "app" could be quite useful for people with ADHD

"But android has a notification bar at the top that shows you when you missed a call or got a message."

BUT you still have to pick up and look at your phone - That's the point!

You don't with the app I recommend.

You can leave your phone on a table - go in and out of the room several times and never miss an alert without picking up your phone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 71,186 ✭✭✭✭L1011

Except to actually acknowledge the app, you do, hence your complaint.

The app solves nothing here. Turn it off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,218 ✭✭✭jiltloop

It is possible to use a mobile phone in such a way that it is never out of earshot. Mobile being the operative word in what we call mobile phones.

I give up - I guess you all like being slaves to your phones.

The app can reduce FOMO by 50% +

There's only one person who's a slave to a phone here OP and it's not us.

I think I hear your three minute notification alarm going off somewhere in your house, better find your phone before you miss something! 😁

You're the one with FOMO for a text message, so you're the one with the problem here.

Try not to crash in to one of us next time you try silence your look-at-me-immediately alarm on the roads.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,544 ✭✭✭✭Supercell

My Garmin watch had a feature like this where it buzzed on your wrist wherever you got a notification/text whatever (you can disable apps you dont want to get notifications from).

That lasted about a day before it drove me mad and that was one wrist buzz.

OP airplane mode when driving is your answer. That app sounds like its bad for your mental health, how would you have survived before we had mobiles?!! Billions of us somehow managed!

Have a weather station?, why not join the Ireland Weather Network - http://irelandweather.eu/

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,814 ✭✭✭FortuneChip

"I have to pull over and read the text to silence the alert."

Maybe you don't have FOMO, but you're definitely a slave to that app, and you're then celebrating that app for how great it is!

  • Administrators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 14,914 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Big Bag of Chips

Being a slave to your phone is having it beep every 3 minutes until you pick it up!!

I had a missed call from my mother today. I saw it 1.5 hours after she rang. No emergency. Just a chat. I hadn't looked at my phone for 1.5 hours. I don't know how that makes me more of a slave to my phone than you?!

  • Administrators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 14,914 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Big Bag of Chips

The app can reduce FOMO by 50% +

Is this the tagline of the app?

What's the FOMO? What are you missing out on?

A text? The text will be there whenever you read it, so you won't have missed it.

A missed call? Your phone will show you the notification of the call and you can ring the person back whenever you happen to pick your phone, again not missing out on anything.

I really hope you're not a shill for this app because you're doing a terrible job of selling it's benefits!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,930 ✭✭✭✭Electric Nitwit

I have a very similar problem. I've got an excellent app called fotmob that sends me a goal alert every time a premier league team score a goal.

The problem is that the alerts are distracting and dangerous when I'm driving and I nearly crash every weekend

Does anyone know who I could contact in the premier league to stop them playing games when I'm driving?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 818 ✭✭✭Yvonne007

This is either the world's worst advert for an app, or someone who is seriously confused as to the usefullness of what is essentially an annoying alarm.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,902 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

Receiving texts when driving is not dangerous. Reading texts when driving is, you shouldn't be doing that.

That app sounds completely ridiculous and unnecessary. People miss texts and called when away from their phone. People normally check notifications when they return to their phone. Incredibly simply.

Even if you insist on that app. It would take 2 seconds to set your phone to DND or disable notifications when driving.
    This is a non-issue.

Surely you just need them to stop scoring goals?

Given it's soccer, I think are probably safe enough already…? :P
