I think Shaw is quite likeable as well. Seems fairly genuine and down to earth. Would still prefer my €90 than seeing them win it

Olmo has been fantastic. If it wasn't for our limited budget and his injury concern, he'd be a no brainer.

Shaw was decent tonight I thought, particularly first half. He doesn't seem fully fit so hopefully this tournament works as a preseason for him and he can stay fit next season.

Well done to Kobbie Mainoo, what a year this kid has had. Should hold his head high, England's best player of the tournament for me.

Shaw was very good for most of the game and understandably ran out of steam.Hopefully he brings that form into the beginning of the League season.

We need someone on his level as competition / rotation. Malacia may never reach the same levels again and if we’re honest with ourselves, the levels he showed when he did play, were not good. Happy enough to see two centre backs come in considering Varane, Kambwala & likely Lindelof leaving but I think it would be criminal not to sign a good left back.

I know that I don't want to hear about Shaw having extra time off because of Englands run in the Euros. Since that probably means a slow start to the season for him.

Bring yourself back into training immediately if thats ok Luke. You have only 20 more games for United than Phil Jones has, no need to miss any more.

Whatever about Shaw it was good that Kobbie got to play in such a huge game and to do well in the tournament overall. A good example tonight of why United need a footballer in midfield alongside him and not to be hoofing the ball over his head all the time.

Seeing Pedri is his leg brace is also a sign of why United need another midfield option so Mainoo is not overplayed. He has outrageous talent but is 19 and needs to be looked after.

Pedri was inured because of a tackle on him not as a result of being overplayed. Unless you think that young players shouldn’t be played as much because of potential injuries from being tackled by other players, which makes no sense at all.

lets see. i imagine he'll be on the beer for the next 3 weeks.

if committed he'll be back in 7 days.

I agree with that. We’re probably in the minority in this mindset but if you weren’t available for so much of last season then surely you sacrifice your holiday time to get to work for the club. The only thing I’d say is that it needs to work both ways. He needs to have a solid backup where he’s not driven into the ground if he isn’t 100% either. He cannot be forced to start games if there is a higher than average risk of injury. Amass may not be ready to step up yet so if that’s the case, you need to have another left back ready for those occasions. It benefits nobody to play around with him like that, as we saw to our detriment last season.

No, you are right that would not make sense. It was the visual of him injured again that brought the idea the mind. Pedri's missed a third of the season injured, a third the previous and most of the one before that

In general if Mainoo is playing for England and United the chance of injuries and overload increase. I would like to see the squad strong enough to give him support and not need to play all the time. He missed the start of United's season injured, is still developing but started most games in 2024. He has skipped under 21 level for England which reflects the significant incease in the deamand on him at a young age.

I agree with you on that but I think the problem we have is the manager has no intention of reducing game time based on a players age. I can see him starting almost every league game this season. In that sense we could become a victim to not backing the manager because he is only going to see things short term this year. The dog on the street knows the contract extension was not a proper vote of confidence for ten Hag. He will do whatever is necessary this season to maximise results and unless two midfielders come in, that will mean calling upon Mainoo at every chance he gets, at the risk of burning him out and harming his development.

With the Copa and Euros now done, I wonder if we will see a ramp up in player transfer activity. Though the players in the latter stages of those comps won't be available to train for 2-3 weeks - would still want deals done so they are coming back to their new side rather than wasting more days returning to their current club.

From the noises it seems we want a Yoro answer this week. I expect it will be a Yes to Madrid, but either way I think that then pushes on whether we sign MDL - genuinely don't know if we want both or one. Both doesn't quite make sense to me.

and, really, we need to do SOMETHING about midfield. We need to be sorting out the futures of Eriksen, McTominay and Casemiro, and any replacements we want to bring in, over the next couple of weeks. Idealy we'd have a good idea of the squad by the time we are heading off to the US.

Imagine we had went all out for Kane last summer and 12 months later we're looking at this version of this player with another 3 years on his contract, similar to casemiro there's a decline in players once they hit 30. Maybe Kane is carrying an injury but I'm glad we're focusing on players in early 20s for the most part.

Kane would have gotten the same service as Hojlund….Feck all, he would have scored more of course but until our wingers start passing more we just won't score much.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,941 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

I think Kane would have suited Rashford and Bruno more than Hojlund has, I think we will see similar positioning from Zirkzee.

I also think Kane simply isn't fit - carrying whatever back injury he had got vs Arsenal (iirc) which hampered him over the end of the season.

That is not to say that long term he would have been the correct signing. If we had been a title contending side then arguably he could have pushed us over the line, imo. But we are miles from that, and the money spent on Kane (inc. wages) would have hampered the squad being built towards that.

I'm hoping the powers that be will move away from these marquee signings and focus on long term instead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,941 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

It seems like our signings are looking to be in the 40/50million range, younger and and on lower contracts.

    Zirkzee: 40m, 100k wages.
    Brantwait (bids) up to 45m.
    MDL (bids) talked around 40m.
    Yoro: about 40m.
Ugarte - the rumoured value from United is 35-40m.
Has there been any else seriously linked? Xavi (if true) would be a higher transfer fee but I think for this season it would be a loan so on the books its value would be around that 40/50million mark depending on the loan fee.

He finished the tournaments top scorer, despite only starting 2 games.

    Willy officially moved on then

Hopefully de Ligt gets sorted this week.

I think we're well off marquee signings for the foreseeable future myself. It actually wouldn't surprise me if we get some sort of slap on the wrist around ffp. I think we're a lot closer to the margins than we're led to believe. I'd consider the above signings a decent summers work. Fingers crossed the next week or so sees a few of these over the line

    CS Game in 4 weeks and majority of players from tournament football be expect;

    Facundo Pellistri

    COPA Holiday

    RW

    10th August

    Kobbie Mainoo

    EURO Finalist

    CM

    10th August

    Luke Shaw

    EURO Finalist

    LB

    10th August

    Tom Heaton

    EURO Finalist

    GK

    10th August

    Alejandro Garnacho

    COPA Finalist

    LW

    10th August

    Lisandro Martinez

    COPA Finalist

    CB

    10th August.

But I think Pellistri will be sold before then, Heaton will be back before but cant include really, Mainoo deserves the break, Shaw IMO should be looking to get back quickly and the other lads deserve the break also.

I say MDL is done this week but the Yoro one has a bad feeling to it, he wants Madrid so do we take the deal for 5 years say then sell him and hope for a massive increase on the fee. With Onana going to Villa I dont see Everton selling JB also

I wonder what the story with Heaton is. He wasn't actually part of the England squad, so does he get the same time off status as the players who are part of it? I could see it being argued either way - he was with them and you'd assume paid/insured accordingly. But he wasn't part of the official squad. Does it amount to being any different from doing a camp in Dubai like loads of players do?
